The Mo Evans Thread

Just wanted to give Mo his own thread.

All the talk has been about the other players we got and how cheap we dumped Bibby.

So what about Mo ?

Well, he seems pretty solid. And he adds another strong body to the court. He seems like a tough dude.

I didn't know Mo Evans was a VP of the Players Assoc. Sounds like he could be a mature voice in this crowd of youngsters. Anyway, in the link above, he comments on Crawfords game.

Maurice “Mo” Evans, who came to the Wizards with Crawford in the Kirk Hinrich trade, has proven to be a veteran’s vet. He’s well-spoken and provides thought-out answers, the good standing of his opinion aided by the fact that he’s one of six vice presidents of the National Basketball Players Association. Evans has been around Crawford for the duration of his 212-minute NBA career (160 over 16 games in Atlanta and 52 minutes over four games in Washington). More importantly, Evans has seen a display of Crawford’s talents and demeanor since training camp and in practices — clearly Evans ranks highly amongst authorities in observational opinion of Crawford’s game. After last Saturday’s game versus the Dallas Mavericks, I asked Evans two key questions about Crawford.

Ok, the basketball God are going to start getting angry unless youll start showing Mo some love.

He has been a nice add. I'm glad this young group has a pro vet like Mo around.

Not a star but a solid add in a larger trade.

Was Mo Evans ever on the Wiz' Summer League or Training Camp roster? I seem to have this vague memory of them giving him a look but not picking him up, and thinking that he could help as a rugged defender. Then, when he would show some value (particularly with the Lakers), thinking - gee, we could use a guy like that.

Sad how quickly the memory goes on the other side of that hill....

Evans defintely deserves some love. He's a respectable role player who can set the tone in practice and play decently on the court when needed. His leadership is similar to what Singleton provided for us last year. I'd like to keep him around next year on a 1-year deal if possible.

That Hinrich trade was such a steal.

Hinrich's numbers in March: 9.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, .546 TS%, 29.8 minutes
Evans' numbers in March: 10.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.6 assists, .528 TS%, 28.8 minutes

Now consider that Mo Evans is paid $2.5M to Hinrich's $9.0M (and will probably cost less than $2M next year while Hinrich will cost $8M). If we made that trade straight up, it would be a win for us. Factor in the addition of Jordan Crawford and the #20 pick and it's a crime.

i have love for Mo. solid pro, tenacious, gives 100% all the time, and even helps pickup his teammates when they're down.

Mo has a lot to do with the recent improved effort coming from the wizards imo.

Mo's play with the Hawks was pretty horrible. He has had a couple of good games for the Wizards but let's not get carried away here. His PER on the season is 9.

Wizards injury update: Maurice Evans ‘available’; Jan Vesely doesn’t travel to Atlanta
By Michael Lee

Maurice Evans, who was acquired with Jordan Crawford from the Atlanta Hawks in the trade involving Kirk Hinrich, was unable to practice on Tuesday after having his knee drained the day before.

Coach Flip Saunders said Evans could be available to debut against his former team. “Maybe,” Evans said in response.

So Mo had a knee drained ? What's up with that ? Maybe he will be ready in the next couple games.

Wizards’ Maurice Evans to have MRI on sore right knee

Maurice Evans remains sidelined with a sore right knee and will get an MRI when the Wizards return home from Milwaukee.

He said the pain was reminiscent to what he felt before having surgery in August of 2010 to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and is “fearful” that the problem may have returned. :-?

Saunders said if Evans can come back healthy, he might possibly use him the way he did veteran Lindsey Hunter in Detroit, where Hunter rested for much of the year but got important minutes late in the season and in the playoffs.

Looks like Mo isn't even in the ball park for now. Bummer.

------------

When we were going to neeed him was down the road,” he said. “We didn’t want to wear him out and we wanted to be conscious of some of those guys, same thing with some of our older players, like Rashard. There might be games where we come in and day tonight, we’re not going to play him. Because to play him a lot of minutes would be counterproductive with what we want to do over the long haul.”

Sounds like he has the right attitude. Win while building or lose while building and get a good draft pick.

Could Mo Evan be the MVP for this team. I think maybe so. If he was the one to finally get through to these guys and the one to lead the PnR change, then that counts for a lot. Smart move by EG to bring him back.

Veteran swingman Maurice Evans has contributed just 73 minutes and 19 points to the Wizards this season, but it sounds like he’s left a far bigger mark verbally. Evans got lots of attention after calling a players-only meeting in early January and then publicly ripping the team’s “sense of entitlement,” and his message has softened much since then.

Friday, before the Wizards split weekend games with the Heat and Pistons, Evans was on ESPN 980’s Sports Reporters, and he got to talking about that meeting again.

“These guys need to learn how to play the right way,” he said. “ I kind of just kept it real with these guys, I spoke to them about what their future will look like in this league. A lot of these guys won’t make it to 10 years, 11 years, etc, playing the way that we play. A lot of these guys are starters here, are playing significant roles here that wouldn’t be playing elsewhere....

“I think that these guys sometimes take it for granted, just because they’re playing in D.C. and because they get to play. The sense of entitlement that we had on this team was unbelievable and it had to change.”
