To be fair to Ferry, the rumor about he and Shoe disagreeing on the pick was reported right after the draft by the 1 local guy who seriously covered the draft back in those days - Ken Beatrice. And Ferry put together the Bullets championship team. His Elvin Hayes for Jack Marin trade is arguably one of the best of all time.

That's just a little before my time, but Basketball Reference lists Ferry as taking the reins June 13, 1973, and Hayes got here in 1972. Jerry Sachs is listed as the previous GM.
Jerry Sachs spent 26 years with the Bullets, Capitals and Capital Centre/USAir Arena. Sachs served in the front office for the Bullets and was key for improving the team. Some of his main accomplishments for the Bullets include drafting Fred Carter, Stan Love, Rich Rinaldi, Kevin Porter and trading for Elvin Hayes.

Ferry may have had some input in that trade, but I think he was an assistant coach before becoming GM, and it seems like he largely inherited Unseld and Hayes. I credit him with acquiring Dandridge, without whom there would be no championship. Post championship, his moves don't look so hot.

Since he had been an assistant coach under Shue, maybe Shue had an inordinate and unfortunate sway over the Green-over-Malone pick.
