Man, the center position really got deep out of nowhere. My hope is that a team offers Gortat enough that Ernie decides to offer a max to Monroe, but there really aren't many teams at all that aren't set at the position.
The Mavericks, Cavs and Pelicans are the only teams that seem to have a clear need at C...and the latter two are arguable.
The good news though is maybe if we're forced to keep Gortat we shouldn't have a huge issue driving his price down so long as we're willing to let the market decide his value.
Watch Ernie pay him more than market value because reasons though.

Keep in mind that in order to clear enough cap space to sign Monroe, they'd have to give up their rights to Ariza, so it likely comes down to whether you want Monroe (if he even wants to come here) or if you want both Gortat and Ariza.

Actually it's more like significantly more playing time for Porter + Monroe vs Ariza and Gortat.
Seen the Ariza/Gortat show enough to pass on that.

I'm just not sure that letting go of Ariza for nothing is worth the privilege of over-paying Monroe. Otoh, I agree that signing Monroe would be preferable to signing Gortat. So it comes down to whether I'd believe in Porter. Not sure I do, but yeah, your scenario is probably overall a bit better - assuming Monroe actually wants to come here over any other team that wants him.

Re: Summer 2014 Free Agents Thread
I'm not sure we can do it, but I'd try to offer Ed Davis a "poison pill" contract. His numbers have looked consistently good for the last 3 seasons even though hes been playing in a relatively slow Memphis system the last season and a half. Still youngish and has decent length. Prototypical PF IMO that could allow Nene to stay at center as he gets older (obviously no Gortat) but I'm wondering what would be enough to get Memphis to balk at the idea of retaining him
8-10 mil per? I assume he'd get Taj Gibson like money.

Davis is the guy im putting my money on. I know a couple people have mentioned Jordan Hill, but I like Davis more. He is exactly 2 years younger, but he is already a better defender and I think he has more ceiling to his offense.
I would even consider signing him and Gortat. Both Gortat and Nene can shoot the midrange jumper so it wouldn't be too crowded. Heck, Id let Gortat walk to see an Ariza S&T for him and Koufos.
