Continuity of failure is not the model for success. It is the model of the Wizards. Both GM and coach have poor track records, so lets rehire them!
Looking just at poor track records presents a close minded perspective. You want to criticize Grunfelds body of work and result with the Knicks? What have the Knicks accomplished since with him gone? The front office was satisfied with giving Wittman a shot and they did not judge based on his track record (which is unfair because that would mean many coaches would not qualify for jobs), rather they judged based on best fit, his commitment to discipline and defense and many players familiarity with him.
What the Knicks have done since EG left is irrelevant. What EG has done since he has been here is very relevant. With over a decade on the job he has yet to field a team that reached 50 wins. He has made a littany of errors without being held accountable for them.
Budenholzer and Joerger were available and we interviewed neither, rehiring a coach who loves long 2s and end of quarter Wall isos.
Through similar channels that I suggested Mo (6-0 Baby) Almond, heaven knows I suggested Dave Joerger five to ten times as many more posts and emails.
Ted Leonsis stuck with Ernie Grunfeld particularly after EG backed the bus over Gilbert Arenas.
I thought Randy Wittman did a terrific job as interim coach.
He did well against Thibodeau in the first round. Not so well against Vogel in round two, but Wittman had very young guards and the Pacers had the best player, Paul George. They also had West and Hibbert step up. Randy Wittman was no Joerger but through last season he did well.
The Wizards constructed a flawed team. Randy Wittman seems to only trust older vets. EG didn't draft Noel last year or any other young, defensive big.
Right now I think Wittman is stressed. He's IMO like a jockey who's not getting the best from his horse out of unfamiliarity with all that animal has. The animal is no thoroughbred, except for the part analogous to John Wall
Plenty of blame to go around, but if Dave Joerger were coach this team would be way better. Same true with Budenholzer. I think they would have been influential in constructing a better roster. EG probably listens pretty well to his coach
