Oh, no doubt. Wall looked like he belonged -- like he was a peer. Unlike, say, Milsap or DeRozan. My hope was two-fold: that Wall would look like he belonged (check), and that Melo, George, and/or LeBron would dominate the ball such that Irving had a minimal impact.

The latter clearly didn't happen.

And thats the thing. Yes, Kyrie got to play along the other great players unlike Wall. But Kyrie WAS the best player while they were on the floor.

I still feel like when Wall got into the game....he should have tried to take it over. He played great defense (for an all star game). But I kept waiting for him to take over offensively. When paired with Kyrie....he deferred to him as well.

I've noticed that you tend to focus on how much they score when it comes to how you judge Irving/Wall.

If that's your focus then Wall will never live up to your standards.

That's just not his game.

Yes, he can score...but it's not a priority.

He's a first and foremost a playmaker.

And I'm not knocking Kyrie either. He's great at what he does but they're different types of players.

Both extremely talented but different.

(Fwiw, Wall scored 12 pts in 15 mins of action with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 assists.)

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

The knock on Kyrie.....in comparison to Wall..

He cant dish it like Wall. Well...Kyrie went to Washington....and showed when his teammates actually make baskets...he can rack up assists. He played with All Stars....he then racked up more assists/points than anyone in ASG history.

If Kyrie scored 31 and had 5 assists....I wouldnt think much about it. To me....it just showed Kyrie is CAPABLE of being as good a passer as Wall. He just doesnt have the finishers/shooting consistency from his teammates. And we all know Kyrie has a better individual offensive game....so thats why I think he's got the edge.

If you switched Kyrie and Wall...I'm not sure the records would be much different for Cleveland. And the Wiz maybe be slightly better because Kyrie is a better shooter down the stretch late in games (area Wall struggles with now)

Wall is a BALLER! However, there is nothing wrong with Kyrie being a better PG. Thats no knock on Wall. Although I wish he got more of an opportunity in tonight's game.

did you really use the "teammates making shots" excuse? Go to any Cavs board and they will tell you he was being a ball hog and plays like a SG. The Wiz game was the 1st game he decided to pass and play like a PG. It was him changing, not his teammates making shots

Wall is a BALLER! However, there is nothing wrong with Kyrie being a better PG. Thats no knock on Wall. Although I wish he got more of an opportunity in tonight's game.

Wall played with the Shaqtin'-a-fool All-Stars his rookie year and averaged 8apg. He set assists records at Kentucky. He is a better natural passer than Irving and always has been. Every scout, GM, etc who has evaluated their games will tell you that. Wall was branded as an elite playmaker, Irving as an elite scorer.

Of course Kyrie had a lot of assists tonight playing with Lebron, Melo, George, etc. When Wall played with good teammates and actually got minutes in the Rising Stars game, he set the all-time assist record for the game with 22.

I agree you that Kyrie has good passing ability, but it's not a matter of ability. It's a matter of whether he wants to or not. We saw many times here in Washington where Arenas would try to prove a point to critics and purposely rack up 10-12 assists in one game. Then the next game, he would go back to chucking. It wasn't that he didn't have the ability to pass, the problem was that he just didn't have the mentality of a facilitating PG.

From what I've seen of Irving, mentally he's closer to that Gilbert type of player than say, Chris Paul. We've seen him for 3 years now. He's not just magically gonna turn into prime Stockton anytime soon. The guy likes getting his buckets, that isn't gonna change. Like I said, we've seen this story with Gilbert already. Every season we kept hearing "He's focusing on being more of a playmaker blah blah" and kept waiting for it to happen, it never did. You are who you are.

Who is the "better" PG is up for debate.. but right now, we can only look at results. Wall is getting results and is beloved by his teammates, coaches and the fanbase and is seen as a leader on and off the court. Can we say the same for Irving? We don't know..

Exactly. Why does Dion Waiters always look like a stud when he's not playing with Kyrie? Clearly there is some talent on that team. And now they have an All-Star caliber player in Deng too, no more excuses. Kyrie needs to take on more responsibility and figure out how to make it work.

Put it this way.

At 21 Wall was putting up 16/8.......and people seemed to forget about Wall.

Kyrie at 21 is a two time all star, all star game MVP.

All while heading to a disaster franchise in Cleveland. Wall is more of a "true" PG. But Wall is more of a true PG than Steph Curry as well....however, Steph's game allows for him to rack up assists because he's such a good shooter/scorer.

Kyrie is the same way....he's just young. Putting up 22/6 at 21.....yea he's going to get better.

Wall was SUPPOSED to superior to Kyrie coming out of college. It hasnt been that. Although, Wall has shown more flashes this year.

As a talent, Wall should be putting up 23/9 a night....however, there's too many "Memphis games" where you wonder whats going on. The same thing happens with Kyrie...but hey...he's younger...he gets a pass.

I do hope Wall starts becoming the player most thought he was coming out of college. A true MVP level kind of player......he has the talent...but will it happen? We'll see.

We shouldn't penalize Wall because Kyrie is having an unprecedented start to his nba career. He's the youngest to do basically everything from the pg position in terms of awards and honors. The argument that Wall is "supposed" to be better than him when they were both number 1 picks is bunk imo.

Kyrie is the most physically gifted guy we've seen with the ball since probably Iverson. He shoots it from range at an elite clip. He's the goods. The fact that Wall is piecing together a game thats on an equal level is impressive. The book isn't written on their rivalry either way, both have so much room to grow and improve.

Actually, that's only part of the knock on Kyrie. The other part is that he is one of the worst defenders in the league.

Both Steph Curry and Wall are better natural passers than Irving. It's clear from watching them play. I watch a lot of NBA ball, Curry and Wall routinely make passes that I've never seen Irving make before. Kyrie is a good passer, but he's more like a Lillard or Tony Parker. I can't see him ever averaging 9apg for a full season.

Besides, at age 21 Stephon Marbury averaged 21/9 with a 20+ PER, which I'd argue is better than what Irving is doing now.. raw numbers don't always tell the full story of a how a player's career is going to go.

The thing with Wall is that he came into the league raw, but he was raw in a lot of areas that could be corrected over time. His first two years, his development was stunted which is why he got overlooked. But his talents began to emerge last season, and he's been clearly better than Irving since then imo. In his third year, he averaged (per 36) 20/8/4 on 44.1%fg with a PER of 20.8 and great defensive numbers. Irving's third year so far is 22/6/3 on 42.7%fg with a PER of 20.4. And absolutely awful defensive numbers (his team is actually BETTER with him off the floor, while Wall's team was like 15+ points worse). Wall obviously had an All-Star caliber season last year, but because he got injured before All-Star break instead of after it he missed out. But the perception is that Wall is just now emerging this year, and Kyrie is regressing. When in fact Wall has been the better player for two years now.

IMO Wall has more all-around talent and potential than Irving, and I'd bet that the majority the basketball world would agree. But everyone will have their own opinion on the matter

Like this game actually matters?
Yea, sure if anyone played more than 2 x the minutes in an ALL STAR game, then obviously they will
do better I mean come on, even out the minutes considering Wall is 10000X more deserving then Irving of being there.
Come back to me, once the Cavs are actually relevant and in the playoffs race
this looks like this will be the only MVP he wins in a long time.
Irving played 2nd highest minutes in this ASG no wonder about the numbers.

I have seen Cavs homers trashing Irving this year on insidehoops. These same people were saying Irving>>>>>>Wall last season. This is just one example.

And in that game, let's not act like his teammates weren't ridiculously hot in the first half. They shot damn near 70 percent from the field in the first half (where he recorded ten of his assists); assists typically pile up in those circumstances, and even then, with an assist gifted to him on a play that he lost the handle on the ball and I think Miles shot it in from three, he still only finished with 12 assists (which matched the best night of his career).

In regards to the game, I thought that Wall was fantastic in his rather limited minutes tbh. He certainly could have played and probably should've played more based on his performance, but he was still extremely impactful when he was out there. Looked like the most dynamic player on the court for stretches.

Wow, he said that perfectly.

Speaking of the Mt. Rushmore of Bball, I was watching First Take on ESPN the other day and Steven A. Smith was talking about how Lebron would be one of the 4 on Mt. Rushmore. The reasoning he gave was so ridiculous. He said his criteria was basically athleticism. He followed that up by saying Lebron is the most athletic player ever in the NBA with the exception of maybe Wilt Chamberlin. However, Wilt wasn't even on his Mt. Rushmore haha.

He's been the 2nd best player on the East so far though.

Wall would've finished with close to thirty assists had he gotten the minutes Irving did.

The only thing i am interested in any more during AS weekend is the 3 point contest. That is a real competition. I can't get into the rest of it any more.

The Dunk contest as a H-O-R-S-E competition would be cool.

I was too harsh on Wall. He put up 12/5/4 in 15 mins. He was very solid and belonged on the floor. Kyrie was just spectacular though.

We'll never know how Wall would have played with LeBron/Melo/George etc.

The issue for Wall is...

When DROSE gets healthy....he'll be voted ahead of Wall....and now Kyrie has become even more of a fan favorite. Going to be tough for Wall to start an All Star game.
