"Nationals have struck a deal to acquire infielder/outfielder Howie Kendrick from the Phillies in exchange for minor league left-hander McKenzie Mills, reports PhillyVoice.com’s Ryan Lawrence (Twitter links). Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network first reported that the Nats were working on a deal to land Kendrick (on Twitter)."

Teams announce:
"Philadelphia is sending Kendrick and cash to the Nats in exchange for Mills and additional international bonus money."

"...Kendrick will provide the club with an option in left as well as some veteran bench depth — and a postseason upgrade over the likes of Raburn and Heisey — once everyone is healthy down the stretch. Kendrick is currently dealing with a bruised left hand after getting hit by a pitch..."

Fun read & video/tweets on Wilmer Difoe

https://www.federalbaseball.com/2017/7/30/16048320/washington-nationals-wilmer-difo-nationals-walk-up-music-delight

"This month, he’s batting .385/.460/.519 with two homers and 13 wRC. Much like Dusty Baker suggested, his GB/FB ratio is 4.33 which means lots of grounders for singles. But don’t count Difo out of the bomb squad; he can crank a homer or two."

Here's the look of someone who's loving the game. Like many of us did growing up playing baseball. :)

Twins sent closer Brandon Kintzler to the Washington Nationals just before Monday’s 3 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline, according to a person with direct knowledge.

In return, according to Fox Sports.com. the Twins will receive Class A lefty Tyler Watson, a 34th-round pick in 2015 rated the Nationals’ 17th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. Watson, 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, has a modest fastball at 90 mph but draws raves for his curveball and progressing changeup.

More detailed scouting report:

"Brandon Kintzler has thrown 4,562 pitches that have been tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2010 and 2017, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, the MLB Postseason, Spring Training and Fall/Winter Ball. In 2017, he has relied primarily on his Sinker (94mph), also mixing in a Slider (87mph) and Fourseam Fastball (94mph). He also rarely throws a Change (89mph).

His sinker results in many more groundballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers and has slightly above average velo. His slider is much harder than usual, has less than expected depth, has primarily 12-6 movement and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sliders. His fourseam fastball is a real worm killer that generates an extreme number of groundballs compared to other pitchers' fourseamers, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' fourseamers, has essentially average velo and has slight armside run. His change is thrown extremely hard, has a lot of backspin, results in somewhat more groundballs compared to other pitchers' changeups and has slight armside fade."

Very good deal. I'd be a lot more confident if the Dodgers didn't look like the '27 Yankees, adding Darvish. If they can't win a damn series this year, I don't know if they ever will.

Just a bad bruise for Bryce but out around a month. Could have been a lot worse.

Very quietly, the Nats have acquired 3 really good bullpen arms without giving up any top prospects. Watson maybe a good prospect, but c'mon... it's hard to get past the fact that he was a 34th round pick. No matter how good he turns out, the Nats got a closer for someone they picked on the 34th round. Already looking forward to the Nats/Dodgers series, and I'm an O's fan who normally has very little interest in the Nats - other than admiring how well they're run.

The Washington teams other than the Nats really set the bar for well run sports teams pretty low.

That said they seem to generally make good moves based on the stage of their team and the status of the competition.

Gio with another solid start, had a no hitter going into the 6th inning with two outs before giving up a hit. Second game since the all star break he's had a no hitter going well into a game.

Gio's final line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K, 91 pitches

11-5 win-loss so far & ERA of 2.49.. Third best in MLB. Only pitchers with a better ERA are Scherzer & Kershaw

Gio gets his 12th win. Wonder how much of this is Weiters effect on Gio...

Wieters was the same catcher who was criticized for his framing of pitches in Baltimore and the O's starters weren't exactly performing great (though better last year than this year). Maybe he does have something to do with Gio's turnaround but what about Roark's mediocre year?

As for this team, I've watched baseball for many years and I don't think I've ever seen a club this good get decimated by injuries like this. Give Dusty credit, though I don't always get who he bats at the top of his lineups, he's done a magnficient job keeping this team consistently good all year.

I think Maddux has really helped Gio, but mainly that Gio has settled into a really good headspace this year. He's a workhorse control pitcher whose found a groove.
