Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves - Part 8
I don't hate this move for the wolves even though that is an insane amount of assets to give up for Gobert. They have KAT, Ant, and Russell to take care of the offense so adding the most impactful defensive player in the league is a smart way to take them to the next level. The only question I have is what is a KAT/Gobert front court going to look like?

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves - Part 8
Gobert and Murray have established the market for stars right now. If Gobert is worth five first-rounders, is Mitchell worth seven? Eight? How badly do the Knicks want to bring him back home to New York? How much could the Jazz extract from a Miami team that came one win short of the Finals? Those six first-round picks the Jazz have added over the past few days could easily balloon to double digits with the right Mitchell deal, and perhaps more importantly, the Jazz could embrace a rebuild in earnest.

Yeah, I would have guessed Miami but New York seems just as likely. RJ Barrett plus some picks could work. The Knicks get Brunson and Mitchell, plus Mitchell Robinson, Randle, and whatever they get out of Toppin in the frontcourt. I think that puts them in the top 8 and better than us - Mitchell is that good.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

The Indiana Pacers are doing what the Wizards should have done awhile ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they are better than the Wizards this year. They have a much better management and ownership group.

Mitchell is a nice player but Gobert was the engine that made Utah good. I'm not saying Gobert was worth 5 picks but to suggest Mitchell is worth more than Gobert is just wrong.

Yeah, Warriors bought low like with Otto Porter and Gary Payton and Donte is somewhat a combination of both- a defensive minded shooting guard with some recent injury history. His 3 point shot hasn't been as consistent as it has needed to be but at this price he's a bargain.

The Knicks were already better than us. They were last year, & they were the year before. Will be again this year.

Lakers might have Kyrie sooner rather than later, and you gotta imagine Westbrook would be bought out by Brooklyn.
If we can get Westbrook for minimal commitment in years and cost, should we do it?

Why would the Nets buy out Westbrook? They don't have their own pick for years at this point so they can't tank. And even if a person wants to argue Westbrook wouldn't help them win, who else are they going to get? He won't take less money on a buyout. Worst case the Nets just tell him to stay home and hang on to his contract to wait and see if they can use it as ballast before the trade deadline.

Might want to use the roster spot on an actual player

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves - Part 8
Despite lacking control over their draft picks until something ridiculous like 2027, it might still make sense for the Nets to tank.
1) The 33-35th picks are a lot more useful than 40-45th. Having a better second round pick still matters.
2) They have pick swaps with Houston some of those years. Houston will probably still suck, to where both could tank into the top 4.
3) Without expectations to win, they can use their capspace OKC style to absorb contracts and grab more picks.
It would be perfectly rational to fuel up the tank for 3ish seasons while running a fire sale on every useful player over 25 on the roster. They quite likely won't go that far... but it would make some sense if they did.

They probably buy him out at the dead line unless his agent works magic. Cuz there could always be a team panic and fire sale and want to get off money they regret spending.I_Like_Dirt wrote:Dark Faze wrote:Lakers might have Kyrie sooner rather than later, and you gotta imagine Westbrook would be bought out by Brooklyn.

Having a slightly better second round pick does not matter in any meaningful way. I can’t believe I read that

I mean, if you take that position, why would the Wizards want him back? It's kinda a double-edged sword. If he's good, the Nets will keep him. If he's bad, the Wiz are better off with a flyer on a kid if they're rebuilding or someone better if they're not.

Historically the top picks of the 2nd round provide better performance and value over their first four years in the league than the last picks in the first round.
Also, the odds of getting a productive player in the first 10 second round picks are significantly better than everything past that. I understand that's not intuitive and might be surprising, but it's also true.
If a franchise is trying to maximize talent acquisition, it very much matters in a meaningful way.

And Kispert, and Todd, and probably Davis too.
Shows how crummy of a drafter Sheppard is.

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves - Part 8
I like what the Thunder are doing and have my doubts about the Wiz long term strategy but Roby is clearly worse than all those guys. The Thunder have spent the past few seasons flat out tanking and even then they've been better with Roby on the bench every season. He's still got some potential but he's got a lot to learn before he's more of a fringe player trying to catch on with am NBA team, let alone a rotation player.

I would have welcomed Dragic as a 2nd or 3rd string PG, the Bulls did well to sign him.
