You know what yesterday I was with a lot of you guys saying "f*ck it lets tank the rest of the season". Now I'm starting to think with some of the more optimisitic, lets do our damnedest to make these playoffs. Shoot get Arenas and Butler back with say a month or three weeks left in the season, hey maybe even Thomas, come together as a team, maybe get hot and see what we can do in this damn conference. I'm not scared of any team in this conference, including Detroit and Boston, even the refs dolls Cavs or our kryptonite Raps. I say with a hot squad, a squad with something to prove we can beat any team in this conference.
Hey maybe it wont happen for this squad, maybe we get our ass whipped with even Arenas and Butler, but damn I'm not ready to give up yet, especially after last years playoffs. Never say never guys crazier things have happened, we know this teams potential. Don't under estimate playing for a contract, I would love to get both Arenas and Jamison in the playoffs. Days have been dark and cloudy guys, but we can still do things, with all the injuries were still only 5 games out of the 4th spot. Im not saying will get fourth I'm just saying, even the 3rd seed Orlando hasn't been that impressive since a super hot start. Lets not give up, just think guys "Any given Sunday".

Welcome back from the darkside, jedi. Fxck a naysayer.
Remember all the **********ers who thought we were doomed, down 3-0 to Chicago. How Amazingly Sucky this that or the other guy was. We sucked, the coach sucked Larry sucked everybody sucked, so called 'fans' gave up and complained that we should have tanked instead and gotten in the lottery. Wait now: Juan Dixon poured in 35 points. Etan Thomas had a 20 point game. Jared Jeffries stole a pass. Gil hit a shot, found that 'nother level. Nobody gave up, ever.
We got nobody on the squad now better than Jared Jeffries? We got nobody on the squad now a better defender, more consistent outside shooter than Juan Dixon? Nobody on the squad more selfless and mentally Tuff in Big Game situations than Larry Hughes?
It takes a long time to turn a culture around. I'm just waiting on a day when Wiz fans can put the 'fanatic' back in the word. Stop waiting for the reason to quit, to give up on the team. There's no honor in being the first one to run from a fight. No honor in being the first to piss all over the team, saying 'see I knew it'. You get no MVP for ducking out the door.
I'll tell you when you quit on a team: when the team quits. When they stop killing themselves for your entertainment. You ever had an ankle that needed surgery? But ran into traffic anyway and tried to dunk on guys with 100 pounds on you and 3 feet in height? Got throat-slammed to the court and walked off the court only to come back later and claim only a little 'wrist sprain'. Don't let 'em see the pain. And the first thing you ask is: 'did the bucket count'?
You ever got out of bed with a knee the size of a canteloupe and decided to go 2 hours on it, night in night out tackling the toughest guards and 3's in the game? And when your shot isn't falling 'cause you got no lift, you got off a plane at 1AM after last second heroics the night before and your leg apparatus is pulsing like lava, but don't want to risk having it drained cause you'd have to take a couple days, and who knows what they'd find in there. So instead you climb up into a Tmac and stifle him to less than a dozen points?
Getting angry with you people. Why the fxck we gonna give up on a team that's pounding themselves on this kind of wall? Stand up and still keep fighting. I can't wait for the day when Wiz fans show these kind of nuts. I know they out there, the anonymous internet maybe ain't the place for them, a safe place for cowards.
But it seems to me we got a whole lot of "f- you" out there. Hell the DC license plate motto is a raised middle finger. Seems to me there's times when we raise up and get furious all at once. Drown out the cellphone fan, get the place rocking like old RFK, or how the DC United fans do, and drag the out of town dilletantes on board to join up. Seems to me ther's a real ball fan here, more than one.
But quit? When they ain't quitting? When we're filling holes in the levee with body bags to keep the flood out? With our own living bodies? No. You don't. You fill bags with sand and pray it stops raining. But you do. not. quit. YOu don't turn on your own, don't look for excuses, don't find a scapegoat. Don't play the 'see I told you', like anyone gives a crap, like you were hoping we'd be losing the whole time. No, you collect your 'I told you' raffle tickets for when we win the first round series, then cash in. Start now damn it.
You support your damned team and say, know what-- these guys, this kinda heart? I give them a chance against ANYbody, any given day. Because no matter what-- we ain't giving up. Fxck a wrist sprain, fxck a knee contusion, fxck a labrum, fxck a heart condition, and fxck a gotdamn mxtherfxckin mensicus. We winning anyway.

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Hello, my name is Severn, and I am a recovering tankaholic.
For years - decades, actually - I was in the "tank for more ping pong balls" camp. And I agree with doc, it got us nowhere. Sure, there's always the chance that we could move up or even win the lottery, but then that only happened once in the entire history of the Bullets, and look what it got us. And in the meantime, there is indeed a culture built up of getting used ot losing, to being the butt of jokes, of being the gracious hosts for an arena of fans who came on their 10-game plan to see everyone else's All-Stars. And 20 years ithout winning a single playoff game.
This recognition is why I was and still am glad that they did the Jamison trade. Sure, I wish we could have acquired Jamison AND kept the pick. (After all, the Bulls just about stole the #7 pick that year, which became Deng). But there is no question that trade was a turning point for the franchise, and that we wouldn't be where we are now if we had just kept the pick, even if they made the right choice (whoever you believe that to be - Harris, Childress, Deng, Iguodala, etc.) Give me a time maching to go back to 2004, and I'd still advise Ernie to make the trade. (Um, and to do a spit-take when presented with Etan's contract, pat him on the back, and tell him to enjoy the Winters in Wisconsin.)
So no, I don't root for the losses to pile up. I'm not counting ping pong balls. Assuming we do make the playoffs, chances are, there'll ba guy available when we pick (at, say, #18) that will be better than the guy taken at #12 anyway. EG just has to make the right pick. In the meantime, make sure the young guys get a chance to see a team that gives 100% effort every night. [That said, I do want Pech, Young, and Blatche to do more than just watch - this is an opportunity for them to get meaningful minutes in a playoff push. That can be very valuable, I don't want to see them glued to the bench.]
We need to get Gil & Caron back healthy, we need to re-sign both Gil & Antawn, and we need to be strategic about drafting and FA signings, especially this summer. We probably need to exceed the Luxury Tax, at least for a year or two. But we don't need to tank.

It's true, that's what I said a few pages back....PLAY and play to win. I still think we'll see both Caron and Gil back this season.

Amazing post but we were only down 0-2 to the Bulls. Man I feel like a softy for saying we should tank. Never should this team lie down. Let's get healthy then shock the World in the playoffs. We can win the East, I believe. Thanks for that amazing post that lit a fading fire in me!

Actually, the "day for a year" principle comes up often when looking at Biblical prophecy:
I have appointed thee each day for a year.
- Eze. 4:6 (KJV).
Very useful for reading and understanding the prophecies of Daniel, and of John in the Book of Revelation.

Yeah, I'll be there yelling and screaming to the end for my remaining games, win or lose. Orlando's next.
Have just had to let go of my hope/expectation that we'd get Mr. Hibachi and Tuff Juice back for the playoff run. I thought the basketball gods "owed" it to us after the way last season ended.
Guess it's still in the realm of possibility, but I'm not going to be surprised by any bad injury news from here on.

well the bad news keeps coming.....i wonder who'll go down next. I think there's no need to tank because i'm sure Atlanta, Philly, and the nets will secure the last playoff spots thus eliminating us. I think Caron should get the surgery and shut down. Gil should shut down as well.....no use coming back to a team that is in shambles except to show he can show other teams he can still play in order to get that big deal.

Butler won't need surgery.
Well that's good news. But we still have no idea how long the recovery process is. But for some strange reason, I'm thinking 2-3 weeks.

Sweet.
Looks like he'll be back the same time as Gil.
