Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
In my opinion the coach needs to be replaced a lot quicker than the GM. The coach will have more of an immediate impact on how we play, later down the road towards the end of the season we can discuss replacements for the GM and other positions.

But I'm not giving up on the season either. Let's see what happens when Randy tweaks the rotation, or if any other minor moves get made.
Considering that EG has blown every first round pick not in the top 3, I am not certain why whether the Wizards make the playoffs is relevant to judging him. Let us assume the Wizards make the playoffs. So what? Next off season, Trevor Ariza and Marcin Gortat will be free agents, and the Wizards will already have a lot of money committed to Wall, Nene, and Webster, with the team still needing to keep salary space available for Beal. EG has built a team that is still far off from being championship level, but already maybe capped out.
I signed in only to give this comment its props. A lot of the EG supporters think that making the playoffs this year makes him a viable GM. Sorry I can't overlook the past. The Arenas signing, Blatche signing, trading for Gortat, trading for Miller and Foye, wizards winning %'s, etc. Even if we make the playoffs, at best, we are going to be in playoff hell, like the Hawks.
Don't get me wrong, I will be happy to see the Wiz in the playoffs and I will route for them. However a part of me almost rather route for them not to make the playoffs. Because I rather invest in the long term benefits than the short term benefits. The long term benefits of the Wiz not making the playoffs is that Ernie will no longer be our GM. Thus we will no longer have a GM making mistake after mistake. Plain and simple.

Role playing - I am Ted and EG comes in with a "its time to change coaches banter"...
EG: Well, we have the talent Ted but we just aren't hitting on all cylinders
Ted: Silence
EG: It might be time for a coaching change... I think it is the best way to salvage the season
Ted: Silence
EG: Is it OK to start looking to see if there are any candidates out there that might be interested?
Ted: Yes, please assemble a team to look for a replacement of the front office and coaching staff - I would like the choices on my desk in 2 weeks

You get rid of the GM, you get rid of the coach.
The GM's been here 10 years. 10 years!

Ernie is like some terrible professors I had in college. The guy has tenure practically.

On the bright side, no matter what the team's record is, Grunfeld will probably decide to retire within the next 10-15 years.

Because I wasn't depressed enough. Thank you.

I think there is more urgency in replacing the GM than the coach. I think Wittman is gone after the season any way. Bringing in a GM now would let him make moves before the deadline. Personally I would take any reasonable offer for Nene and try to get something(even decent 2nd round picks) for Booker and Ariza.

What does the record need to be before Ted just says eff it and can EG and just tank the season?? Is this even possible? Say the record is 10-27. At that point the playoffs are out of the realm of possibility.
What does the record need to be before EG cans Wittman as the skapegoat?

I really don't see Wittman getting canned unless EG goes out the door with him. Canning the coach would be affirmation that the season is lost. I don't think even Ted is so criminally incompetent that he would allow EG to take over the rebuild yet again.
I could see Wittman getting fired and an existing assistant coach being temporarily promoted to finish out the year. Ted might leave EG at the helm for the remainder of the year rather than try and fill the position midseason. I would hope that he would avoid having EG make any major trades, other than to dump Ariza and/or Nene to further enhance the tank.
That summer, EG's contract would not be renewed and Ted would begin to search for a replacement GM.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
In all honesty, there really isn't any reason to keep Grunfeld around in his capacity as GM of this team if Leonsis isn't going to extend his contract.
If Leonsis was serious about turning this teams fortunes around he'd give it no more than 20 games before making a decision on both Grunfeld and Wittman.
Unfortunately as evidenced by the Capitals, Leonsis is notorious for sitting on his hands.

If I had to guess, I would say that Wittman being replaced mid-season with a promoted Assistant and EG not being offered another contract is the most likely scenario. Although things could look a lot different at the end of the month with only 2 decent teams(Minn, ATL) and 1 great team(IND) on the schedule, they could be flirting with .500 and the bottom of the play-offs without really getting better.

The very minute Ted decides to can EG, from that point it would be entirely irresponsible for EG to be kept around or allowed to make any decisions going forward.
To that point, even making the playoffs it's hard to see how you extend EG's contract given the complete flop of all of his draft picks. So it's hard to see where that leaves us today.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
Funny enough, I got a call from a Wizards sales rep today, and she sounded desperate. I planned to get some 200 level seats with some co-workers, but the interest faded big-time. She's going to call me next week but safe to say I'm going to send that call to voicemail.
I think the front office is feeling the heat.

That article is so on point. Although I am not a proponent of Whitman—he's a mediocre coach at best—I don't think it's his fault Seraphin plays like an idiot, Vesely has no skillset, and Maynor has no talent.
The Beal situation could be remedied by giving Rice Jr. some time. I don't want to see Beal's minutes this high off an injury.
