If nothing else, Shaq Cleare is going to be the biggest kid to play at Maryland. He is huge and appears to be very strong for an incoming freshman. He already looks like a grown assed man of about 25-26 years of age.

This video shows Cleare putting in some good work at the Caribbean Sports Academy. Lot of work on step through, up-and-under. Shaquille C seems to be a methodical worker who is going to get the most from his ability. He doesn't have a lot of bounce but he's definitely going to bang inside. He's a back-to-the basket player who looks like he's going to be a very solid rebounder to me.

I think Randy Edsall is going to be mad at Turgs for stealing this kid from the football program.

There will be a lot of new faces on the Terps basketball team. They could be much-improved despite losing Stoglin.

Mark Turgeon’s first full recruiting class at Maryland got under way three days after he was introduced as the Terps’ basketball coach with the commitment of Fredericksburg (Va.) Christian guard Seth Allen, and it didn’t end until late April when Baltimore native Sam Cassell Jr. offered his pledge.

In between landing Allen and Cassell, Turgeon and his staff secured commitments from a trio of four-star prospects in center Shaquille Cleare (The Village School, Houston), small forward Jake Layman (King Philip High, Wrentham, Mass.) and power forward Charles Mitchell (Wheeler High, Marietta, Ga.). The five-man group is considered a top-15 class nationally by most recruiting websites.

Turgeon also spent his first full year on the job monitoring the transfer wire. That paid off with commitments from Michigan forward Evan Smotrycz (who will sit out this year) and Albany guard Logan Aronhalt, who has graduated and will be eligible to play immediately for the Terps.

Turgeon spoke to The Sun this week about Maryland’s incoming freshmen, transfers, recruiting for 2013 and beyond, replacing Terrell Stoglin, expectations for this season and more.

Are The Harrison Twins Leaning Towards Picking The Maryland Terrapins Over The Kentucky Wildcats?

In ESPN.com’s Dave Telep’s “Elite 24 Saturday Notebook” that was published earlier today, Telep discussed the Harrison twins, Andrew and Aaron. The two have made it obvious that they will be attending the same school and have trimmed their list to Kentucky, Maryland, SMU, and Baylor.

They will be making their official visits to SMU and Maryland, but did not mention that they would be taking official visits to either Kentucky or Baylor. The reason for not taking an official visit to Kentucky was that they have spent so much time around the University of Kentucky, that they know everything they need to know about Kentucky, so need for alarm for Big Blue Nation there. However, the interesting thing for Kentucky fans everywhere is what Telep said regarding the race between Kentucky and Maryland to land the Harrison twins.

My gut in July was that Kentucky was the team to beat. I’m feeling now like Maryland closed the gap and is making its move.

Now, this may be nothing at all, but it could evolve into something if Maryland continues to close the gap. Kentucky was thought to basically have Andrew and Aaron locked up. But it appears the the contest is much closer than everyone is assuming. I feel as if they will still land at Kentucky in the end, but the harder these other schools push for them, the more interesting this recruitment will be.

I think the Aaronhalt recruiting was pretty brilliant - in that it gives them a really mature smart senior - which they desperately need - and then doesn't take up a scholly the next year - leaving them room to go after the Harrison twins (or other top guard recruits) without having to worry about forcing someone to transfer or burying someone on the bench. Great strategy.

The person in the Harrison twins' circle who the Terps probably need to woo could be their mother, if I were to guess. I don't know their family dynamic but I do know their dad wants them to go to Maryland.

The twins like the Baltimore area. Their dad likes what Coach Turgeon did while at Texas A&M, including off-the-court things following the tragic death of a recruit. Their dad is an old teammate of Bino Ranson's. They've played with Shaq Cleare. Perhaps another school is offering inducements or appealing to their mom as to why the twins would pick elsewhere.

If those twins come to Maryland, and if Alex Len can stay one more year, Maryland can be a Final Four team next season. They could win it all-- with Len and the Harrison twins; their beefed up lineup with Cleare, Mitchell, and Dodd. Maryland is going to overtake Duke, and possibly UNC in the next couple seasons IMO.

And Evan Smotrycz becomes eligible in the 13/14 season - a battle-tested PF - the first time I can remember a 3 point shooting big man on the Terps. That's a lot of big bodies. Dodd may or may not be coming next year. I think he's going to a prep school or JuCo this year to get his grades up.

Look for a committment from 5-star Suitland HS PG Roddy Peters in the near future.

He's visiting other schools now but many (including Damonte Dodd) feel that him becoming a Terp is pretty much a done deal.

2013 Class: Andrew & Aaron Harrison 5-Stars, Damonte Dodd 4-star and Roddy Peters 5-star, Evan Smotrycz (Michigan transfer).

Fwiw, this is from a UK board.

Hopefully it's inaccurate, but there are some very, very involved individuals within UK basketball that are saying the threat of Maryland for the Harrison twins is indeed legit and has grown substantially over the last 2 weeks. Dad is in TIGHT with Under Armour and being sold a bill of goods beyond belief. U.A. basically making their case for the Twins becoming the face of the company after one year with the Terps. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

The Terps squeaked by William and Mary 7-6. I would have rather seen them lose, so Randy Edsall would catch even more heat on the way to getting fired. Maryland's freshman QB threw three interceptions.

In other news, Danny O'Brien went 19-23 for the Wisconsin Badgers in their win today.

Randy Edsall was a horrible hire.

I don't see any more games on their schedule for which they are likely to be favored.

Could they end up 1-11?

If so, will Anderson have the stones to admit his mistake and cut his losses?

Good news.

Dez Wells was on campus yesterday and had a great time according to all reports.

Attended the football game with several BB players including Nick Faust, Sam Cassell etc.

Dez is headed to Oregon next and will make his decision early this week.

Keep your fingers crossed.

And fwiw, a poster on another board talked to a BB player and some interesting things were said.

The good stuff has to do with the Harrison twins. According to this player, things can change but this player believes the Harrisons are "in".

I know for a fact that UK insiders are very concerned.

Dez Wells decision to come within next two days

While Wells was at Maryland, he was frequently tweeting from his @DezWells_5 account. He never tweeted from the locations of his other visits.

“I credit Maryland, they really got his spirits up,” the source said. “It was a blessing to me to hear. It started out a rough week for him. He went through Kentucky, Memphis, but Maryland was the first time I heard the excitement back in his voice.”

The source said he heard from Wells “every two hours” via text while the former top-tier recruit was at Maryland, but never received a message during Wells’s Oregon visit, aside from when he touched down at the airport.

This alone, the source said, could offer a clue into the ultimate decision.

“Just by his excitement,” the source said. “If I had to bet the house on it, I would be betting in the blind, I would have to say, my gut, I know how he felt, sounds like possibly Maryland.”

The Terps have an open scholarship and would almost certainly pursue a waiver to get Wells eligible to play this season, given that, as Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said last week, his expulsion was the result of “something seriously flawed” in the university’s judicial process

As expected touted Xavier transfer Dezmine Wells has committed to Maryland. Big get for Mark Turgeon and the #Terps.

Terps fans struggling to believe all the recruiting news. Times were tough on the trail in recent yrs. Turgeon's getting it done & quickly.

If Alex Len sticks around for next season, Terps are in good shape (Len, Cleare, Layman, Smotrycz up front; Wells, Faust, Howard perimeter)

And then, if someone Turgeon/Under Armour can beat out UK for Harrison Twins … WOW. I said Turgeon would be in Final 4 within first 5 years.

Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanCBS

Mark Turgeon can coach -- and Terps are getting players. That's a scary combination, one that will make Maryland nationally relevant again.

I don't particularly care for UMCP taking Wells. Xavier dismissed him for a sexual assault charge. Good character matters and this might not help the program if anything comes up in the future.

If Wells is a great player but not a good guy let another team have him.

Well, all reports from the local authorities said Xavier was extremely crass in how they handled the matter and that he should have never been kicked out. He was also never charged with anything.

Wizpride, I read somewhere that if we took Wells we might not have room for the Harrsison twins, should they want to come here, let alone the twins and Peters. Is that true.

Nope. We have scholarships available.

Dez Wells won’t be charged, raising questions about Xavier’s decision to expel him

Once a grand jury decided Tuesday there was insufficient evidence to indict Dez Wells on charges of sexual assault, the former Xavier standout received support from a highly unlikely source.

Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters urged the university to "revisit" its decision to expel Wells for what Xavier deemed last week "a serious violation of the Code of Student Conduct." He also told WLW-AM 700 in Cincinnati that it was "fundamentally unfair" that Xavier expelled Wells August 3 and denied his appeal August 14 without allowing the legal process to first play out.

A defense attorney standing up for a client wouldn't raise any eyebrows, but it's certainly more unusual for a prosecutor to take such a stance. As a result, it has raised questions as to whether Xavier officials may have overreacted in expelling Wells in an effort to protect the image of a basketball program still recovering from the brawl with crosstown rival Cincinnati last December
