If this is true, I will be sad to see him go, but at the same time be happy for him.

In the 3rd year Gil only makes 20.8 so even if Shard only makes 10 then thats 52.6mil vs 57.8mil for Gil. Only 5mil difference when Gil is a much better player. You arent saving much. Sure Gil will have one more year left but by that time his contract will be seen as a asset since its his final year

The way I would look at it is that this year's a wash and there's no out on that 2011 money now that the season started.

But believe me, I'm not a passionate advocate of us getting Shart.

On the Trade Board here, it was being discussed with Magic fans and I was pitching pick swaps with our 2011 and 2013 2nd rounders for Orlando's 1st's in those same years. We don't care about being locked into rookie salary on late picks as it fits our turtle strategy and they'd probably rather have the non-guaranteed 2nd round picks anyway. I think the incentive is reasonable there as we need Shart to stink anyway based on those performance clauses - if he came here and played great, it would actually hurt us.

If we don't get Shart, you won't hear me complaining about it; I'm just laying out the basic financial reasoning for it.

I must say my head's spinning to all this. It had been rumored so much, but I find it all rather shocking now that it's seemingly here. I would expect it was all just a BS story, but Wojo's probably the best guy in the Biz about breaking transaction news.

Hmmmm......I guess we'll see.

If this goes down, I'll definitely be watching all the Orlando playoff games.

I'm nowhere near as informed in the trade realm as some of the cognoscenti here, but do you think Teddy might be angling toward a run at Carmelo with VC off the books at the end of the year (or through a buy-out)? Maybe they feel he'll want to come "home" to play local. Homeboy would be a HERO!

It keeps the youth core together and adds an impact player at a position of need. I know it's a streeeeeeeetch to say the least, so I'm expecting to be shot down, but...... Maybe?

I think the Wiz are so far down on the list of places Lala and Melo want to go it's not even worth kickin the tires for Ted. The general feeling out here is that Lala is the main driving force in Melo's decision to leave Denver for NY. Unless she has ambitions to be a politician I can't see them coming to Washington.

Oh boy. Wonder what we are getting ...

I repeat, if EG gets out of that contract without taking back Shart, he's executive of the year. That's over $100M in dumped salary between Jamison, Arenas and Stevenson alone.

Butler was a salary dump as well, and so were DSong and Etan...too bad it took a top five pick to make it happen.

Sources say Orlando has talked to a number of teams and could be planning two separate deals. Trading for Arenas may just be the start

Executive of the year indeed, but means little if he doesn't do anything with it.

another sad ending for a potential superstar in DC

John Williams
Juwan Howard
Chris Webber
Gilbert Arenas

hard to trade a player who scored 60 pts on back to back nights but as usual, injuries/our medical staff was the the main culprit

How about sign Dwight Howard in 2012?

How sick would that be? We trade McGee for Batum, draft Harrison Barnes this year, and sign Dwight Howard in 2012:

PG Wall
SG Young/Barnes
SF Batum/Barnes
PF Blatche/Booker
C Howard/Seraphin

Yeah. That could work.

Howard would break his leg
Blatche his knee
Wall will be on one foot by then

Looks like Arenas' time in D.C is done. Is it too much to ask for Snuggles to go with him? Does this mean Young finally starts? If it's Shard I'm done watching this train wreck for the year. Wow, Hiney will be our highest paid player.....lol!

I just got through reading a 35 page thread on the Magic board. I have a bad feeling it will be Shard Lewis coming back, rather than VC. But we'll see.

This is getting weird. The new article says it could be Shard or both VC & Shard but it also says that a trade does not look imminent

Here's something from the Orlando Pinstriped Blog (their version of Bullets Forever):

The Orlando Magic's trade discussions with the Washington Wizards regarding point guard Gilbert Arenas may involve the Magic sending more back to Washington than first thought. A source advised Orlando Pinstriped Post that combo forward Rashard Lewis, who owns the league's second-largest salary, is "being discussed" in this potential trade, with shooting guard Vince Carter also headed to the nation's capital.

Lewis and Carter combine to earn over $37 million this season, according to ShamSports, so if the Magic were to send them both to Washington, the Wizards would have to include more than Arenas' $17.7 million salary to make the trade work under the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement. My source did not know which players Orlando would receive in this scenario, but did say it's "unlikely" that veteran combo guard Kirk Hinrich would be in their number.

http://www.orlandopinstripedpost.com/20 ... -trade-for

Well, that would suck. But he notes that:

It's important to note that trade discussions often include mentions of players who do not ultimately change sides when a deal is finished. As such, it's possible that either Lewis or Carter could stay with the Magic even if Orlando acquires Arenas. And again it's important to point out that a trade does not look imminent at this point.

There's just about no way that we could take back Lewis and Carter without getting royally screwed as it would almost surely need to include Blatche to make the salary match. But I don't even think there's ever been a trade where a team sends out $37 million in salary for that year in the history of the NBA and it doesn't really match with what we've heard as far as the Wizard's druthers, so I wouldn't panic. It's probably more likely that both guys have been discussed as separate pieces (one could push the leak angle, but I don't know what the point of a leak now would be with serious discussions going on; it would be more likely to screw things up than anything else).

Washington drafted Wall and brought in Hinrich. The intent has always been to move Gil. I feel like Gil giving up huge cash is good karma for him and good for the Magic and the Wizards.

I want Gil and Kirk traded and hopefully as happy as Deshawn, Caron, and Brendan are. Give him hope like Antawn had before Lebron exited Cleveland.

I really don't care if the Wiz get Rashard or a not-so-sexy deal. Hopefully, Gil gets a Mike Vick new leas"h" on life.

I will have an easier time watching young guys lose. Flip can coach them all the same way. Good riddance. Make a trade and give this fan a Christmas gift. I am excited about this rumor!

If this all goes down, what does it say about Ol Ted's credibility? I can already hear his excuse now, "I won't be a meddling owner/tell my front office what to do. I really wanted to keep Gilbert, but if my personnel people think this is the best thing to do, then I'm not going to say otherwise."

Which, you know, may all be well and good but means that whatever comes out of his mouth isn't worth a hill of beans.

The only thing I have gleaned from Ted's many takes on Gilbert is that there has not been a market for his services. Authorizing a Gil trade would not undermine Ted's cred at all.

Agreed, he'd just be another lying owner. "Gil isn't going anywhere"
