Why? Why should we give them more than Mahinmi on his own? Please explain.
Thompson wants out. They have no intention (& would have no ability) to retain him next season. They aren't going anywhere this season, so it doesn't matter to them if Thompson is "better" than Mahinmi. & a straight swap saves them $3m.
Why would we give them another asset of any kind? To be nice? To...? Why?
Well if they'll do it straight up then fine. But there might be other teams interested, or we just may need a little sweetener. But it would in part be "to be nice" to Admiral, because I just don't see him getting a shot here the way Bonga has emerged at the same position. Also, my motivation to include him is I believe he is a guaranteed contract next year and I'd like to open the roster spot for Matthews. The roster I listed is 15 without Admiral.
Well, if there's competition for Thompson such that one has to overpay,
then don't trade for him! Find someone who doesn't have to be bought at an above market price.
Admiral is guaranteed for next year wherever he winds up. His money is safe. As to getting a shot, that's up to how he plays. I do understand your motivation to open a spot for Mathews, but again I don't see an issue. I don't exactly recall your roster of 15, but surely you don't think it's written in stone!
In fact, we have lots of roster room -- 8 guaranteed salaries right now, plus Bonga & Pasecniks, & 2 rookies makes 12. Even if we did bring back Bertans & add Thompson, we'd have room for Mathews. Nor are we going to be appreciably better next year than we are this year -- somewhat better, to be sure, but not even vaguely competitive for R2 of the playoffs.
Bringing on mediocre veterans is the quickest way to irrelevance. Paying a little extra for them because "what's the difference?" just accelerates the process. I wonder how many times people on this board will have to watch that happen -- as it has over and over for the last many years -- before they figure it out.
