Washington Wizards

Additions: None.

The Wizards sold the No. 46 pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for cash despite several big needs. What's more, they don't seem to be gearing up to land a major free agent. This is a head-scratcher. Jordan Clarkson, whom the Lakers took, would have been a nice addition.

Grade: D

Your missing my point. I think EG is an average to below average GM (I.E. He's a C-). All I am saying is that people can appreciate small moves while still maintaining that EG needs to be replaced(This is the camp I am in).

The Spurs had the 60th pick in the draft and Cory Jefferson was there (A favorite of many on this board after his junior year). You even heard people on this board crying about how we sold our pick "but look at the Spurs, building there team with Jefferson...God I hate EG". But then it turns out that the Spurs sold the pick...then silence..

Again, I DO NOT LIKE EG AT ALL (I actually think his obtuse, condescending personality pisses me off more than his personnel moves some times). I am just trying to keep things on an even keel.

Sounds like the Net had 1M to spend and got the 59th and 60th for that.

SA had Corey Jefferson in the palm of their hands and lets him slip through for chump change.

Thanks FAH,
I try to stay fairly medium here and not be overly optimistic, nor pessimistic. So I know Im going to piss some people off and say that the people bashing EG are almost as bad as the fan boys. Burton is a legit player who I would have been ecstatic to get at 46. EG got a great value and 2 Million dollars. I have a hard time being upset...

Exactly. They got a player and 2M

And some how that's a bad thing.

I still have not seen anything showing Burton has signed with the Wizards other than to play with their Summer League team. Signing with the SL team does NOT mean he is signing to be on their 15 man roster.

And Leonsis' explanation stinks! Use the D League. Use everything you can to improve the players and the roster.

Getting drafted 46th doesn't mean you make the team either.

Drafted or undrafted, that player was going to play in summer league to prove if they could make it.

Deonte-Burton and Khem-Birch were both slotted as late 2nd round picks and we have both going to the summer league.

Here. With the 51st pick, the Washington Wizards select.... Deonte Burton PG from University of Nevada
And with the 52nd pick, the Washington Wizards select....Khem Birch SF from UNLV

Feel better now ? :D

Oh, and here is 2M dollars.

Honestly. Complaining is natural for any fan of a team, but making up stuff to complain about ? I don't get that. They got two 2nd round worthy players, and 2M dollars.

As for using the DL, they have. Plenty of times. We just didn't do it last year because we had 15 players.

Have you already forgotten all the DL call up they had ? Do we need to board to do a list of all the DL player they call up over the last 5 years ?

^^^ There's a significant difference between drafting a player and signing to summer league. The problem I have with this is that the Wizards don't have the rights to either Burton or Birch. If they impress in Summer league any team in the league can offer them a contract. why would it be advantageous to have a situation where he's basically auditioning to the rest of the league and is then effectively a free agent? Maybe that's worth 2 mil to Leonsis but it's hard to argue that it's better for the construction of the team than owning the rights to one of birch or Burton.

When you draft a player, you own his NBA rights. He can't sign to play with anyone else. When you sign a player to an SL team, you own nothing tangible. He can sign with any other team. The Wiz have no rights to him unless they sign him to their regular roster. See manifested's post.

The Wiz have used the DL twice - For PJ Ramos and Glenn Rice, Jr. They haven't called up anyone. The only players they got from the DL were free agents who anyone else could have signed.

Ernie and Ted are anti-rookie and anti-youth. It is foolish of me to get hopes up about Burton. Realistically, he very likely won't be given an honest look. The Wizards from Wittman up have a dismissive attitude toward non-veterans.

Thanks for clearing that up, Ruzious and manifested. The draft gets a team exclusive rights, an exclusive shot, an exclusive look at players who, if they work out, are low cost additions to the roster. Comments about who is available and the likelihood that a 2nd rounder will contribute completely miss the point of a long standing issue of the Wizards under EG. He seems largely incapable of using the draft to pick up quality additions outside of some blue chippers. Outside of Wall, the 2010 and 2011 drafts apparently have nothing to show for the long haul, and outside of Beal, the 2012 and 2013 drafts have yet to show anything. 2009 and 2014: nothing. No wonder some people think acquiring talent through the draft is overrated

Sure, you can get lucky sometimes and pick up a rookie FA who is as good as or better than someone who was drafted, but the Wizards coaching staff and front office seem so biased toward veterans that I'm inclined to think an undrafted rookie would have to make a pretty spectacular showing to crack the roster, and that showing would likely attract the attention of other suitors. Alternatively, EG may find a diamond in the rough who has no other suitors, and the team will quickly understand why they were able to sign that player without competition. Or they never give that player a chance.

For no good reason, I hold out hope that a rookie FA who makes a good showing is influenced by the chance to play with Wall and Beal and a team that made it to the 2nd round, a team that has spots all over at which they might earn some minutes. As usual, I'm not holding my breath or anything.

Sure. I understand that.

My point is that its marginal long shot stuff at this point. They have plenty of options. And you don't know if those players will show anything and if they do you don't know that they wouldn't want to sign here. How often does a player sign to a teams summer league team and then the team they signed with wants them but they go some place else ?

Point is, don't worry about things that haven't happened yet and are very unlikely to happen.

They call people like that worry warts.

Thats still using the DL and they have a ton of players they signed that way. Temple is one of them. C Marin is another. Almonds. Larry Owens. Alonzo Gee. Othyus Jeffers. Bobby Simmons. They were all basically free assets. That using the DL.

They also sent Andray Blatche and Hamady Ndiaye to the DL as well.

This.

Unfortunately, this is how I see this playing out. Burton to me, is EXACTLY what this team needs in the backcourt. A young, athletic combo guard that can play both guard spots. Instead, they are selling picks to pay for part of Andre Miller's contract. The same Miller that's about to be 39 years old and has clearly lost 5 steps.

They have Wall 23, Beal 21, and Otto 21. And until otherwise shown, they have Kevin 24. And I expect them to add at least one more under 24 player either in addition to Kevin or in replacement of him. That's enough young players for a playoff team that made the 2nd round.

How many playoff teams have their top two young players younger then Wall and Beal and have a 3rd one lined up younger the Otto ? How many that made the 2nd round ?

I will only care if Deonte Burton isn't added if he is better then who is added.

Honestly, he has some serious holes in his game. If they want to add an athletic defender who can drive as the 3rd PG, fine. But he has pretty much zero PG passing skills. I could see him fitting on the team but I also see other options as well.

So if he fits, great. If not and they add something better in that position or prioritize another positions more, so be it. I'm not going to lose my mind if they don't sign Deonte Burton.

I'm sure it's happened several times, but I don't have any inclination to research it, because it's irrelevant. What matters is what will happen going forward. If Burton impresses other teams, he'll have his choice of where to go.

It doesn't matter what the odds of success were. It's zero if you don't try. There is no defense here.

The model franchise, Spurs, use every resource possible to upgrade their team. They have multiple 2nd rounders playing meaningful roles on a championship team. They have multiple assets overseas. Yes, they sold a 2nd this year. They also traded for another. Their team is much deeper than ours. Yet they continue to add pieces in any way possible.

We on the other hand, have multiple open roster spots, but think we can't add talent in the 2nd round. It would be way too difficult to make this "tough & deep" roster. Meanwhile, we're likely to spend about $20 million annually on TWO former 2nd round picks!!!

Selling the pick benefits ONE person. Ted Leonsis. It doesn't give the team the best chance of improving. Arguing otherwise is simply being a blind homer.

Tis a tad ironic, ain't it?

Exactly right on SA. They have a championship team and still drafted 2 players, so them selling the 2nd to last pick in the draft is hardly equivalent to the Wiz selling a mid 2nd rounder when the Wiz didn't even have another pick.

That is a very good point to make to those who say 2ed rounders don't matter, we are about to pay 2 former 2ed rounder very well.

Also, I would like to say this, If we sign Burton, Miller, Birch, or any of the other undraffted guys we brought in, selling that pick becomes forgivable. It does because, then we get 1 or 2 players with second round maybe even high second round grades, cheaper and LA basically pays there salaries.

I think SA picked our pocket about four or five years ago and signed a SL player that we wanted to keep. Can't remember if is was Alonzo Gee or someone else.

Return to Washington Wizards
