Almost? Man... how much better would we be in the future if we had Noel right now?

I like Porter and still have hope for him... but it's frustrating to see him struggle to get opportunities on the perimeter when we have an obvious need for an athletic post defender.

When people praise Ernie for this or that or question my fandom because I can't support the GM... this is part of the reason why. I can't support a GM that makes decisions off of fear & panic. This isn't some revionist history. Noel was the clear #1 prospect in the 2012 draft by a mile up until he got hurt. It seemed like the Wizards were caught off guard when Noel was available and defaulted to the safe choice because they felt Porter could play & contribute right away. :nonono:

Of course, they were depending so much on Otto playing that they signed Webster to a long contract to share the 3 with Ariza. I think Otto will be a good NBA player, but I thought Noel was the number 1 prospect in a relatively weak draft. Still, there are ways to get that defensive big we need, so taking Porter might turn out okay in the long run. In the meantime, it is brutal at times watching Humph try to protect the rim.

Brutal is not the word. Ugh, I was tearing my hair out yesterday (and during the Phoenix game). Dude tries but just doesn't have the tools.

So is there a chance that we pick up a free agent in 2016 that makes up for all our problems?

Assuming we don't get KD. What's plan B?

Maybe reunite Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons here - they'll both be UFA's in 2016. Kawhi Leonard could be a UFA if he doesn't re-sign as an RFA in 2015 with San Ant.

Kaminski has grown on me as a draft target. Right now doesn't look like he'll be around for us where we'll be picking, but if he is, he has a really nice pure shooting stroke. He can hit it anywhere on the court, at 7 ft and he shoots the 3 ball with ease. Also like his hustle and the way he boxes out is a big plus to me.

2nd round Juwan Staten could be a fit.

The thing that could help Kaminsky fall too us or get him in rage of trade up, is that he is a 4th year senior and as we have already talked about, there is a bias there and teams will pass on him for younger options with more "upside" and "potential". it's stupid but it might play to our favor.

this draft is stacked with late round defensive bigs, that helps us a lot. depending on what moves we make at the dead line. the draft could stack us up front.

I'd love Kaminsky. Is there really any chance he falls out of the lottery? I don't see it.

I have only see one mock draft where he is inside the top 20 and they had him at 14, I think he is worthy of that place but I don't think he will go there, I think a lot of factors could push him back, it all depends on who comes out and they needs of the teams head of us.

and I posted a large list of late round bigs that could really suit out needs too, like
Christian Wood: UNLV, 6-11, 12PPG, 9RPG, 3BPG.
Robert Upshaw: Washington, 7-0 10PPG, 6.8RPG, 4BPG.
Rakeem Christmas: Syracuse, 6-9, 16.6PPG, 8.5RG, 2BPG.
Zach Auguste: Notre Dame, 6-10, 14PPG, 6.5RPG, 1BPG.
Bobby Portis: Arkansas, 6-11, 16PPG, 7RPG, 1BPG.
Amida Brimah: Connecticut, 7-0, 12PPG, 4.8RPG, 2.8BPG.
Damian Jones: Vanderbilt, 6-10, 16.7PPG, 7.2RPG, 1.7BPG.
Jakob Poeltl: Utah, 7-0 10PPG, 8.6RPG, 2.5BPG

Not all of them but the odds are half of these guys and possibly Frank Kaminsky will be around when we pick, or will be in rage of a trade up.

Makes sense, guys like Dakari Johnson move up and Kaminski falls. We'll see, but he sure seems like a good fit for this team.

If he does go before we can grab him, I would say Wood and Upshaw should be our next go too targets, wood could go early too though if he does come out. Upshaw is a great fit too But his offensive game need a lot more work. Same issue with wood plus wood needs to add a lot of bulk.

I know Christmas is looked at as a 2nd rounder - mainly because he's a 23 year old senior who's only been a role player until this season - but I wouldn't cry (or jump for joy) if he ends up being the Wiz 1st rounder - assuming they're picking late 1st. He's not a late bloomer as far as defense - as he's averaged around 3 blocks per 40 throughout his college career. He's got good PF size at 6'9 and a solid 250 lbs and has surprising 7'4 wingspan - don't know what his standing reach is. Decent rebounder, decent offensive player. What he can be is the hard-working backup rim-protector and banger that won't hurt you and will eat up minutes, so you can rest your starting bigs.

At this point the jury is still out on Otto vs Noel. Neither guy is doing that well.

Noel's offense is a dumpster fire. That wouldn't bother me as much if he had enough beef to play C. A 4 who has no J at all will cause a lot of spacing problems, as Detroit found out (and Houston will) with Josh Smith. Smith was lucky in Atlanta to play next to Horford who has has a better than average midrange shot.

Otto's jumper looks better than i thought it would. His lack of athleticism really shows when he tries to finish inside though.

Yeah, hes an overall good player and he has a nice head on his shoulders, if you watch him he that kind of crafty that makes rondo a good defender. On offense or on D he is always up to something. He has great off the ball movement and with, guards like wall and Beal on the team, he would be a great fit. If we could find a way to get him and Robert up shaw, my lord that would be amazing!

Yeah I think Porter just needs to find his place, He has the tools to be a defensive staple and a decent shooter. He just needs time.

Just checked out Upshaw's stats and was blown away. Plus, he's listed at 7 foot, 264 with a 7'4 wingspan. Seems to have come out of nowhere somewhat like Olynyk 2 years ago - stunk 2 years ago as a freshman for another school and must have used the year off very wisely. And he's only 20. I need to watch him play. http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Rob ... 447/stats/ bizarre how different his per 40 stats are from his pace adjusted per 40 stats - U of Washington must play at a very fast pace.
Edit - First time watching him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8zfKVm24VQ he's a big-time rim protector.

Yeah, this dude is amazing, the best part is, he will more than likely be over looked do to his situation. If you look at his numbers, size and age, the kid should be a top ten pick but he is projected to go late, second round even. what worries me is the fact that he is a guy that the spurs, heat and thunder would look at pretty hard at the back of the draft so I hope we can grab him.

Check out that nasty pick n roll play at the 4 minute mark. That's a high IQ play.

This article says he's got a 7'5.5 wingspan. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the ... 13064.html

He's a real bad foul shooter now, and I assume he has no jump shot. Still, he's got a 35.3 PER (same as Okafor's) - and this is a guy who's a big-time defensive presence. Doesn't turn the ball over a lot. I agree - he's worth a top 10 pick but likely won't be picked that high.

Btw, not that the Wiz have any chance at him, but I've been watching a lot of Myles Turner (ranked 12 by draftexpress) is so much like a young LMA, it's amazing - even if he weren't going to the same school. He has so many ways of scoring - and better range than LMA had in college. It's silly that he doesn't even start for Texas. I'll be surprised if he doesn't end up going top 5.

I don't remember who it was who mentioned Demetrius Jackson before, but I'm a big believer after watching Notre Dame edge UNC last night. He's a poor man's Eric Bledsoe - Bledsoe's a bit longer and bouncier, but otherwise the similarities are there. I came in expecting to have my eyes glued on Grant, but Jackson stole the show - with his aggression and athleticism. And he makes shots - a startling 66% of his 2's this season and 42% of his 3's.

Grant had positives and negatives. He has great size for a college PG, but his post-up attempts were futile - and he shot some ugly jumpers over opponents - seemingly thinking his height advantage was all he needed to make shots. He also failed to finish on a couple of drives to the hoop - showing a possible weakness there - his length didn't make up for a lack of explosion. Otoh, he did a great job setting up teammates in half court - alternating going to his left and right - looking good setting up corner 3's.

Overall, I like them both for the Wiz, but I think Jackson is the better prospect - and is absurdly underrated by draftexpress.com - who rate him the 60th best sophomore in the country. The problem for Jackson is he's a 6'1 college shooting guard - but Bledsoe had the same issue. Jackson has PG experience - like Bledsoe did - so I think he can adjust in the NBA.

I was fortunate to get tickets to see the Georgia-Arkansas game last night, and even better, they were in the 4th row at the foul line, so had a really good chance to see Bobby Portis up close. He was my pre-season pick to watch for the Wiz pick this season, so I wanted to see if he passed the eye test in person.

The short answer: Maybe. Or perhaps Yes-and-No. Or even Yes, but....

He looked incredibly smooth on offense. His jumper was so silky. (He'd be a perfect fit for the Wiz, because he took a bunch of long 2s. :nonono: On the other hand, he made them - and the college long 2 is more of a mid-range jumper in the NBA. But I digress...)

He had a few other good basketball plays, passed well out of the post (on the few occasions he went into the post, or got an offensive rebound), and made a couple other plays simply by being tall. One was a block where his length surprised a jump shooter on the perimeter, and another where he pulled down a rebound and immediately found an open teammate for a 3.

All in all, a very polished offensive player. And he was being harassed all night by the UGA fans, but it never seemed to get to him. I know Rashard Lewis is not a very popular player around here, but he kind of reminded me a bit of Shart - not quite as automatic from 3 (although he did look good making the one he did take), but a bit more length and all-around game.

On the downside, he seemed very weak/skinny. Not much in rebounding (was stuck on one board for much of the game, got several in the last minute to end with 5). Didn't see any rim protection from him. Couldn't hold his position very well on either end of the floor. Was mostly matched up against smaller players, and UGA's big man - not much of an NBA prospect - had about the same impact on the game, but they never switched Portis onto him.

So if we were to add him to the team, I would see a very good offensive player, a legitimate Stretch 4 candidate, just not a 2-way player. For next year, playing alongside Gortat and Nene could be a good fit, leaving whichever of those two is on the court with Portis to be the primary interior defender, while Portis can provide offense and great spacing for Wall to work with.

Funny thing is, I came into the game wanting to like him and was even more impressed with his offense than I expected to be, and yet am slightly less enthusiastic about him as a prospect than I was going in. Still, I'd be glad to get him in the 20s, and I guess if he was all that he wouldn't be available that late. Would be a good addition, a good piece to the puzzle, but really just that - a supporting piece. I wouldn't complain about that.

Good stuff, Sev. I pretty much agree with you. I think his size/strength will be better than average in a few years for an NBA PF. He's 19 and probably 240ish lbs now, and he was measured at 6'10.5 with shoes with a 7'1 wingspan. So, I'd guess he'll be 250 in the NBA hopefully with more muscle.

What's the view here on Kennedy Meeks?

(More likely to be available to us than either Upshaw or Portis, I think)

Rakeem Christmas was bad for 3 years but is having a very good senior year. Thing is, I'd rather have Birch. Doesn't look like Miami has his rights any more (?), and he's just *killing it* in the D-League. Wish he was on the team right now (instead of Rice).
