You are correct, but it was top 49 corrected, and it turns out we have the 49th pick. Who says EG doesn't have foresight?

Oh good, I'm a big fan of that player, cash considerations. I think he could develop into a stretch 4 we need with some development.

Edit - that's top 49 protected; not corrected - so I corrected it. :)

DX has one of his negatives as low upside, but thats a hard thing to determine for a guy who is only 18 even if he doesn't have good physical tools. With that said I do have my heart set on a PF, if one of Portis, Lyles, or Looney are available it will be hard to let him slip by.

Unless there is a sleep elite stud there, all things being equal, you go PG. Time and fit matters a lot.

Wall will be in like year 5 next year. Session has been good for us and will back up PG next year. So stack the deck now by drafting a good prospect that back up Wall moving forward. Get those young legs in next year and get them red shirted for a year where Wall and Session can start teaching them about the NBA game.

While the front court has some long term questions. Its mostly good for now. I wouldn't use the first pick there. Beside, you land KD to play PF, and everything changes regarding an major concerns adding talent there.

And Thomas is still in the running to eventually come over as a SG so adding that next year isn't more important to me timing wise.

I think they will try to resign Kevin. He still has value as a young strong back up front court player. And if they sign him, Blair can go so that opens a slot.

But I'm not to my final conclusions yet. I spend more the season focused on the team this year, not the draft.
What to do with the 2nd round pick is the question. do they get a Jordan Mickey. A draft and stash. Or try to use that pick to more Webster ?

I think we traded the 2nd round pick in the Humphries deal. Not 100% tho. If not I have zero insight into who we pick or even who I want. I guess I'd go with whoever CCJ likes best.

And to your point about drafting a big this year, I don't think who we have on the roster is going to affect who we draft. If Gooden, KS, and Hump are all on the roster next year it still pays to have a young big to develop for the future. All three of the PFs I listed have better than average upside for a 19th pick. Looney has length and shooting ability, Portis has an advanced offensive game including the ability to shoot, and Lyles has the size to play both PF and C and looks to be very coordinated for a big man. I would be pretty excited to get any one of them.

No sense in drafting a player that has no projected minutes when you can draft an equally good player in a position that will.

Gotta take the master outline of the plan into account.

Thomas is out there for SG
KD or other at S4 will play out.

Gotta thinks this year and next year then project out.

After 2016, lots will change in what they need still and what they can do. Better and better FA will sign here now. That opens lots of options.

Its a rolling rebuild until 2016. Or maybe even this year if they can land a Milsap.

Whoever they draft, isn't playing much next year unless their are injuries.

For now, I'm still gather intel about the team from these playoffs.

They aren't doing cash considerations this year.

They will draft and stash if they have to.

What is interesting to me is that Mario Hezonja is projected to be a top 10 pick this year. He is 20. Satoransky is 23. So, you are drafting on potential. Still - very interesting...

Mario and Thomas have similar stats this year, If this kid goes in the first round, I would feel very good about bringing Thomas over this year! Or using him in some trade to grab another first round pick.

They need another guard (or two) to back up Wall and Beal (assuming Beal becomes what we all hope he'll become). They're going to need a SF/SG type to play behind Porter (assuming Porter becomes what we all hope he'll become). As payitforward notes, Gortat is fine, but he's 31 and at minimum they're going to need a backup for him. And they're going to need a new starting PF, plus a backup PF.

The only "certainty" is Wall.

There are less question this year then last and least last year then the year before and less the year before then the year before that.

Long-term, the roster has loads of questions ?

How about MEM and DAL ? They have loads of questions next year.

Long-term, SAS has loads of questions as well. That's just NBA. Best you get is a stable 3-4 year window sometimes and then there are questions.

Not sure the Wizards have loads more then other playoff team long term.

We have a nice little window right now with Paul Pierce. After that, they will have more windows as long as Wall, Beal and Otto keep getting better and they have Gortat and they will have windows after that as long as Wall is a WallStar.

Baring any bad luck, we got a good 10 year window here.

Whatever are you talking about, Hands? We have 4 players of any use at all that'll be with the team in 14 months. That's what we've achieved in 6 years of a rebuild. Speaking of which John Wall will be playing his 6th season, not his 5th, next year. He's almost half way through his NBA career. (Ok that's an exaggeration! :) )

You talk about guys like Gooden and Pierce as if just having their names means they'll stay as they are for many a year. We're on a nice run right now, but we have traded much of our future for that run -- or at least we've done a poor job of acquiring young talent that can develop.

I can't figure out where you are on all this; it seems to change w/ whatever the current fortunes of the team are.

Now, I am enjoying our current success, and I hope we ride it a long way. And if we get lucky w/ draft picks this year and next all the better. But to compare us to Dallas? Yes, they too have a team that's too old and has questions. But they got a championship along the way, right?

Or, better yet, you want to say that because SAS may actually get to the end of their Duncan era, that means they're comparable to us in having roster problems?

Having only 4 players, all of them starting caliber, and three of them still very young, is actually a good situation. It gives us a core team plus max cap room. (Technically, we'll also have Humphries.)

Hands11 makes a fair point. If the Otto Porter of the last 4 games is here to stay, then future prospects of this team are much improved, particularly if EG manages to find a good PF in this draft.

We really need Beal to make a leap next year though. He needs to become a Wes Matthews caliber player or better.

Hmmm, maybe you are right; maybe I overstated my case.

That said, Hands' point was that we *don't* need to draft "a good PF in this draft." He's suggesting -- or at least that's how I take him -- that Pierce and Gooden suffice at the 4 with Humphries also on hand, and especially because he thinks we should retain Seraphin, because he is a good young backup Center.

My point was in response to that position of his. You may not think it's a problem; I do.

Thomas was definitely the better player - he is just 3 years older. And he was lights out from 3 and a very good finisher on the break.

Wizards Offseason 2015

Post#134 » by W. Unseld » Sat May 16, 2015 4:36 am

My wish list:

1)For Wall's jumpshot to improve to the point that teams are scared to leave him wide open

2)that Pierce comes back just as clutch

3)that Otto makes the leap

4)that we pull a Spurs and get a sleeper that can contribute right away

5)that Seraphin makes the leap on defensive rotations and passing

6) I don't necessarily think i want Randy fired, he's got them playing defense & before tonight they were executing well out of timeouts, for those that do want him gone who do you realistically suggest as a replacement? i don't think Thibs is realistic.

Athleticism. Team needs play makers with athleticism.

Justin Anderson is underrated IMO.

I want Portis or Kaminsky at stretch four but they won't be there when Washington selects.

Ed Davis could help a lot.

My worst fear is that Pierce retires and we find some way to Pay Seraphin sizable long term money.

Could we trade a future protected 1st to move up and acquire one of them? I think Portis, Kaminsky or Looney might be worth trading up for if it help solidifies an upward trajectory of this team.

I've wanted Ed davis for a long time, much more over Seraphin. If Hump works hard on his 3pt shot this offseason we could have a great big man rotation of Gortat, Hump, Ed Davis (wishful thinking probably) and our pick.

My offseason wish had been the same since John Wall was drafted, give John Wall a star post scorer to whom he can dish. Always been my wish. Always will be my wish.

We have proven that older players can fill out a playoff roster. What we need is to sacrifice a young piece, or draft picks, to get the star piece. Until we do, we are wasting John Wall's, and everyone else's, time. If Harden/Howard can't win a championship, or Lillard/Aldridge, what makes us think Wall/Gortat can? We need a top draft pick big. And we have the cache to draw him. So, do it.

Howard and Harden aren't out of the running yet. Terrance Jones is stepping up for that team. Clint Capella is a future stud. Brewer, Terry, and Ariza each have championship experience.

Return to Washington Wizards
