Not sure I've heard anyone who seemed to love himself more than that guy, and he lost his job for being... that guy. He's talented and had some good perspectives - but not my cup o tea - regardless of his stupidity re John Wall.

It was his multi-year obsession with Wall that made me question his sanity. Jeebus H. Christmas, just give it a rest already.

He also loudly jumped to the wrong conclusions about Sean Taylor's death before the facts were in.

He is a douche and perhaps deserves to be fired just because he's not very good or entertaining. But I have to admit that I'm growing more and more concerned with the creeping power of the Political Correctness Machine. More and more guys are getting fired because they have the audacity to offend someone. How did we become such a thin-skinned nation?

We've really got our priorities out of whack. A guy like Ron Artest physically assaults a fan in the stands and gets just a 1-year suspension. Cowherd merely implies that a group of people aren't too bright and he gets fired for life.

As hypocritical as it seems (and is), Coherd's comments about the DR didn't really madden me. He was just being bombastic and, up until then, ESPN was completely okay with that. I was irritated with his multi-year jihad against John Wall. He was illogical when discussing Wall and it maddened me.

I hear, and have some similar thoughts, to what you express. Especially on talk radio/tv. Also, I think he's said things that have really offended my sensibilities in the past...they're not like racial stuff. It's when he'd go off of the rails stupidly. THAT to me was more offensive.

You can get away with being insensitive if you have not brought a lot of attention to yourself for being a dick.

Colin Cowturd is not one of those people.

I don't think it is a bad thing society is moving away from archaic stereotypes and dismissing people who accept racially offensive overtures as something worth entertaining or promoting in this case. I don't get why punishing people in public positions of power for racially charged statements is a bad thing. Political correctness is a necessary component for an accepting and tolerant society IMO. We're far away from reaching it, but this is one damn good thing ESPN has done in a long time.

That's what concerns me. At some point, you might make an inappropriate joke and it will cost you your livelihood. Think about it. Your ability to care for and feed your family can be compromised because of a joke or an ignorant comment. How is this reasonable? What happened to "sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me".

Psychological damage is potent too I believe. If the youth are exposed to certain stereotypes about themselves over time it can affect them in ways they may not realize and help propagate some sort of negativity. For example, I use to be muslim...now I left islam mainly for philosophical reasons around when I was 15/16, but I can tell you hearing terrorists jokes in 8th/'9th grade (although not directed at me, most of the time) cause of 9/11 did have some effect on me and made and my personal theological outlook on life.

Pernicious language and stereotypes are far more dangerous IMO nate. But I believe this is a discussion better started in the political thread :P

That's not what happened though. Colin Cowherd has a long history of making offensive remarks. ESPN has a lot of sponsors who care about ESPN's image. There's only so much BS ESPN was going to put up with and Cowherd knew it. He had to know he was always one offensive remark away from being canned.

No one's going to fire you for making one inappropriate joke.

Well, ok. I work in the government and it's impossible to fire people for incompetency, but it is possible to fire someone for making a racist remark. So if you are incompetent but in a union job that it is impossible to get fired from, you can and probably will get fired for making an inappropriate remark. I saw it happen once. But in that situation I think it's safe to say you deserved it.

You always have to be watching what you say at all times about everything, especially on the internet. It's not a PC thing. It's a "no email is ever truly erased" thing.

I don't think it's about political correctness as it is about business... not to mention showing at least a bare minimum of respect.

Saying he's fired for life is a bit mellodramatic. Supposedly, he already had something lined up with Fox and has all kinds of offers - in the same industry. The NBA has a monopoly in it's industry. What's a guy like Artest going to do if he he's "fired for life" by the NBA?

Cowherd's deal with Fox had already been announced before ESPN canned him. With him having one foot out the door, I can see why ESPN thought defending him in this case was more trouble than it was worth.

Either way, let's all be clear that this is not a First Amendment issue. Free speech does not equal freedom from consequence. Market forces are at play here. If Cowherd wants more artistic freedom, he can go to satellite or the web like Howard Stern or Glenn Beck.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cowherd did this all simply for business reasons. He's certainly got a lot of publicity - with a lot of folks making him out like a martyr. He was going to leave ESPN anyway. Now he's a guy who's not afraid of taking risks. He's edgy. More marketable. :banghead:

LOL. Probably 2 years ago - maybe longer - the Montgomery County fair was giving away pairs of Bullets tickets just for making 2 out of 3 shots - from about 15 feet. I won about 10 pairs of tickets and gave them away at my office. It was hard to find takers - the Bullets weren't very popular at the time.
