He built through the draft, and signed key guys. That's great and all, to build through the draft. But guess what? In the NBA, it's 2 rounds. NHL...who knows...they pick like 12-15 players, if not more, every year. So if you've got a lottery pick, and the guy turns out to be a bust, that's gonna set your team back 5 years. Look at Kwame.

Just saying, Leonsis has had success, but like I said, part of it was luck. The other part is that he had nowhere else to go but up. His team couldn't get any worse.

I agree that there's no reason to think he will necessarily be able to solve all the problems overnight. The Wizards have some big problems. I will be happy to move on to the next owner; I hope the next owner is Leonsis because he's shown commitment to the team, a transition to him will likely be the quickest and smoothest transition, and I have no reason to think he will be a bad owner.

The "win now" mode seemed reasonable, but it failed. There is nowhere to go but up, but who is going to lead the way? Leonsis seems to have learned from the Jagr move and he's stated things to that effect, and he also has acknowledged that the Ovechkin pick was fortunate. He seems well grounded in the realities of running a franchise, and his stated plans sound reasonable and realistic. For now, that's enough for me.

Sure. I wouldn't be surprised if he came in and dismantled this team. Changes are going to be made, whether we'll get worse or better depends on what kind of moves we make.

Clogs - not saying that Leonsis as owner will be bad nor am I saying not to look forward to his ownership, if it goes through. But...I'd keep my expectations in check. Don't expect everything to be okay in 6 months. Just my two cents.

It's been said that Wes Unseld is no more than 6'5", yet he played successfully against Jabbar and other (much taller) top centers, won an MVP (the only Bullet/Wizard to do so), and helped lead the team to four title games and its only NBA championship. To me, he represents an ideal of playing beyond your God-given limitations, and he is my favorite NBA player ever, so I'm a little biased.

If only in a symbolic role, representing past on-court success and effort, I'd like to see him stick around in some capacity.

To be totally honest, Leonsis has no control over Stern ramming one up our backsides and giving us the #5 pick again. He has no control over luck, and luck is a huge part of success in the NBA. You only get one good draft pick a decade, and you HAVE to do well. Kwame Brown combined with Gilbert Arenas imploding ... that was our chance, and it imploded.

Leonsis can hire a new medical staff. He can hire good scouts. He can establish a sense of professionalism throughout the organization. So you have to be realistic about what exactly he can do. But I think it's a lot.
Help us, Obi-wan Leonsis. You're our only hope.

I won't be crying if we get the 5th pick; we can get a serious player there and we might be able to do as well by ourselves there as we would at the 2nd slot depending on how things shake out.

Last year, the best player thus far was picked 4th.

The year before, Rose might be the best player, But Love, Lopez and Randolph have outperformed plenty of guys picked ahead of them.

Moving forward.

Sigh. Just imagine if Kwame didn't suck and Gilbert wasn't the polar opposite of serious. It could have been a hell of a run for the Wiz.

From the WaPo bog:
Ted Leonsis discusses Arenas situation

Amidst all the uncertainty surrounding his attempted purchase of the Washington Wizards, Ted Leonsis has--to the best of my knowledge--avoided talking about the Wizards' current problems. Thursday afternoon on 106.7's LaVar and Dukes program, though, Leonsis offered at least some vague thoughts on the situation, calling himself "more a healer than I am a breaker-upper."

To get into the issue, LaVar Arrington asked Leonsis whether his general business plan with the Capitals could translate into an NBA franchise, and how he might go about cleaning up the Wizards mess.

"Well, we're at a very sensitive time in discussions and the process, and so it's inappropriate for me to talk about specifics," Leonsis said. "But I will say Mr. Pollin was kind of the archetype of teaching owners that teams are a public trust. He was beloved in the city, he gave a lot back, and when you look at when something has gone off track, it's usually because that double bottom line was missed. Our--and when I say our, I guess I can say that, we own 44 percent of the [Wizards], we just don't run it--but the Wizards' biggest issue right now is that its franchise player, its best player is not happy right now. For numerous reasons. And he's a great person and a great player, but something got off track."

Arrington interjected to ask whether the mess can be repaired. LaVar specifically asked whether Gilbert's relationship with the Wizards could be repaired, but it sounded like in his response, Leonsis was talking more generally about the franchise's relationship with the community.

"I don't know how the story will end, but I'm certainly someone who deals with things [with] a very open mind," Leonsis replied. "I'm more a healer than I am a breaker-upper, right? And my belief is that Abe built something of great value that the city loves....So my belief is that this formula can work on any business, and I'm hopeful that we find a way to buy this [team] and close [the deal] and make everybody proud."

We want Ted.

We want Ted!

We want Ted!

We want Ted!

We want Ted!

We want Ted!

We want Ted!

We must get this chant going at the games.

I'm quite loud, but I usually save it for the 4th of close games, because I lose my voice pretty easily. I'll be at the Nuggets game. If I hear someone yelling it in the 4th, I'll join in.

fish- Just got home. Am a bit numb about the official deal going down. I kept hoping we would get more..a draft pick, Beaubois, something.

I am simply speechless about this move. I cannot take anymore from this inept front office.

I may have to go into 'full lurk mode' for a while...

I was leaning towards "FI-RE ER-NIE!" and "**** THIS ****!" as the official chants, but I'm board with "we want Ted!".

I'll be at the Nuggets game next Friday, as well so let's try to do it then. Otherwise, I'm not sure when I'll be back at Verizon for a Wiz game this season. I'm going to try unload as many tickets as I can for the rest of the season but unlike EG I'm not gonna just give them away.
