FYI and FWIW, I'll be playing tonight (Friday June 3rd) in Fairfax at Earp's Ordinary from 730-10 as a member
of "Heartland" backing up my friend Rick Landers on dobro.

Yes, Hank Jones ranks among the best to do it. His brother, drummer Elvin Jones, wasn’t bad either.

I’ve been binging recently on another great pianist from the 1950s and ‘60s…Tommy Flanagan.

Last night watched “It Might Get Loud” featuring guitarists Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White. Excellent and now free on Comcast. Son House, just mentioned by PIF, is in there as a major influence of Jack White.

Yes, I heard Elvin live any number of times -- when he was Coltrane's drummer
Not to mention the third of the Jones brothers -- Thad -- one of the greatest trumpeters ever, & -- to my mind at least -- too frequently overlooked or underrated.

Oh yes, I love Tommy Flanagan. He had a beautiful "touch."
I can't restrain myself; I'm going to tell you a "brag" story about another Detroit pianist, a friend of Flanagan's growing up. About 4 years ago, I was in London (my wife & I were visiting her youngest son, a journalist who lives there), & we went to some obscure little club in the Southeast part of town to hear some jazz -- a quintet headed up by an American pianist who was a long time jazz exile in Europe (there have been tons of them, as I'm sure you know). He wasn't well known, & I've totally forgotten his name. But he was quite good.
After the set, I went up to him & thanked him for the music & commented, "man you sound a lot like Barry Harris."
He looked up at me from the keyboard, raised one of his eyebrows, & said, "Barry Harris was my teacher!"

A lot of people don't know Barry Harris' playing. You'll love him, Zards. Here he is in a trio format, playing a set of tunes by the great Tadd Dameron:

Please don't take this the wrong way, but being an influence on Jack White would be one of the least important things about Son House:

I gotta friend who lives in NYC who took piano lessons from Barry Harris up until about 5 years ago, Harris died in the past couple of years.
Just got tickets to the Monterey (CA) Jazz Festival in late September. Headed there with four friends from college. Looking forward to seeing a few folks, including singers Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling, and a group that features Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade and Joshua Redmond.

Re: Resurrected unified MUSIC thread.
Oh man that sounds like fun. Take pix/video, & post in this thread!
Barry Harris died late last year, a week short of his 92d birthday. Hank Jones died also died at 91. Tommy Flanagan only made it to 71, alas. You think about these kinds of things when you get to my age.
But, now I'm thinking about being not quite 20 years old, walking down a little street in Paris on my way to hear Sonny Criss in some basement club & running into Bud Powell's better half, "Buttercup" Edwards, on her way to the same spot. We had a few sentences of conversation, none of which I remember.
Now, if we're talking pianists, Bud was the greatest of the great of that period -- & has to be thought of as one of the greatest jazz musicians ever.
Didn't I write in this thread, maybe a year ago, about the Chicago-born pianist Chris Anderson, whose career was constrained by a horrible bone disease? I used to hear him in Chicago when I went to sessions around town as a teenager. Herbie Hancock studied with him.

I listen to very little rock these days, & I'd never heard (or heard of) You Me At Six before clicking your link.
They're not exactly breaking new ground, but they are very good. The lyrics as well as their playing. So, I've gone on to listen to a few more songs: In a Beautiful way, Bite My Tongue, If I Were in Your Shoes, Loverboy, & Room to Breathe (in my headphones right now as I type).
How far back in rock history do you go?
The Clash? --
David Bowie? --
Pere Ubu? --
& here's a band I'd bet money you've never heard of, though I'm sure you've heard the cover of this song written by the guy who founded the group. So tell me, do you know...
The Brains? --
I'd better stop, huh?
Here's a little band I was on stage with once a long time ago when I was still learning how to climb out the crib:

Here's an English folk song that's probably 500 years old, maybe more, done by one of my favorite English bands, Traffic:

Love Traffic! Their album "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" is one of my favs. It's a beautiful blend of rock, pop and jazz.

I like. Funny though the opening riff reminds me of RHCP "Cant' stop". They go a different way with it though.
Oh hey cool, You Me at Six plays the Fillmore in Silver Spring in September. I'd go to that show.
I will listen to pretty much any kind of music live.
Partial list of shows I've seen over the past few years:
Lettuce
Caravan Palace
Kim Gordon (formerly of Sonic Youth)
Helmet
Clutch
GOJIRA
Lamb of God w/ Slayer
Good Charlotte
P Funk/Trombone Shorty
Karikatura
Jungle
Chet Faker
Walker Hayes
Cracker/CVB
Zap Mama
A rack of Go-Go bands whose names I'm forgetting, at various outdoor block party jonts.
Various indie folk bands, or bluegrass pickers, likewise at farmer's markets etc
Various relatively unknown bands at the Black Cat because tix are cheap and why not
Any free outdoor concert pretty much, Silver Spring concert series has had a few good ones.
I would have seen Bikini Kill a couple times at the FIllmore but they kept getting cancelled due to Covid.
The Fillmore is a good venue. Black Cat is great to discover new bands. 9:30 is the best club on the East Coast for my money. So, yeah. Bring any new music to this thread, especially if they are coming through the DMV.
