The crazier thing is he's still only at 29.6 mpg for the season. Malpractice for a coach not to give him 34+ a night.

You know how Keefe had the green light/was pushed to play the youngsters this season?

I think that Billups is pushed to play Ayton, Simons, Sharpe & Grant. Those are his guys and "I think" he was looking to build around those guys. But I think they have learned that Avdija is better than all of them.

The closest I ever came to getting past it was in ceding the obvious point that if Bub turned out better than Deni, then the trade would have made sense. I never thought that was likely though, and I still don't.

This trade killed any remaining interest I had in the team/any optimism with the new FO. Believe some of the rationale from the FO and the extreme reactions to the trade from a portion of the fan base were absolutely rooted in prejudice.

Briefly tried to be optimistic about Carrington as a prospect, but had him in a “do not draft” category in the lead up to the draft.

The only part of any rationale that made some sense was an all out tank for Cooper Flagg. They will have at most, a 14% chance at the guy, otherwise, absolutely nothing is changing with the direction of this franchise.

I continue to be amazed by the level of emotionality around this trade.

I liked/still like Deni, but I was fine with the trade. We're rebuilding. Sh#t happens. Players move. NBD.

OTOH, no one can deny that the better Deni plays the better Portland will have done in the transaction. How cd that not be true?

& nate is also right that we can't predict Carrington becoming better than Deni -- not w/ any reliability at least. Tho -- again as he pointed out -- if he does then no question the trade was great for us.

For the rest, I am perfectly happy to cheer for Deni while I wait to see how the sum of the assets we received in the trade turn out over time.

Here’s the reality:

Deni Avdija is likely to be, next year or the year after, a Top 20 or Top 25 player in the league.

And: he’s 23.

And: he’s 6-9 and getting stronger.

The emotion, here, is that we had a very young frontcourt player, a two-way player, a fierce competitor, and a guy only just scratching the surface — and we let him go. Did we get something back? Sure. But the whole point of GMing is to acquire promising players, invest in them, and hope that they continue to work and grow and become something good. It’s so hard to get a hit, outside of the top 5. So so hard. And we hit — and decided, nope, let’s do this again with another player.

Yeah, the emotion is that the Wizards just gave away the third best player they've drafted in the last 30 years, behind only Wall and Beal.

You are right on this. And man do I hope they get Flagg. It would be epic... I too have had a hard time watching the games this season.

I really hope for a Flagg/Broome duo. I think Flagg/Sarr/Broome could be a nice group moving forward. So, there is that.

Amen. IT was change for the sake of change, not realizing the bird they had in hand. That's why I've said all along it felt petty, felt shortsighted.

Ok, fair enough.

All the same, the only way to arrive at judgement will be to see what all the assets we got in the trade add to the team.

It would be hilarious if WAS got #1 and Portland got #2. Everyone wins.

I'd say Demi is 4th. Even though he didn't do it here, Sheed is the most "talented" player this franchise has ever drafted.

I hated the trade because I loved Deni. I also don't see anything at all special with Carrington. He'll be at best a 7th-8th man type. If Deni was on our team, we'd easily have 7-8 more wins and be stuck in the treadmill of the 7th-8th position of the lottery, so I understand the move. I just hated the compensation for it. I would have rather gotten 4-5 future 1sts from OKC than the Portland package.

I don’t think that’s a valid justification of the move.

They could easily have done what they’re doing now, and sit Deni for the last 5 minutes of the third and all of the fourth quarter and sub in Gill, or Martin, or a dude in line at Home Depot.

If you’re committed to tanking, you don’t need to worry that you have good players on your team.

I agree about Rasheed. I was starting the clock after Rasheed. So I guess it's 29 years, not 30.

Exactly. It might have been impossible to avoid maybe 2 or 3 more wins, but that still keeps us at 3rd-worst with the exact same odds for a top 4 pick. At worst, we would have added between 4 and 8 more wins and that would still keep us at 4th-worst, with only incrementally worse odds a top 4 pick, while keeping a real All-Star caliber young player in the fold.
