Really the whole "AD to GS" trade idea was motivated by our desire to acquire Yaxel Lendeborg. But, guess what? GS didn't/doesn't want to trade Yaxel! :)

In short, it was a fantasy. NBD.

Nor ought we to conclude, realistically, that we "failed to capitalize" on any non-recapturable value of AD. Remember how little we gave up in acquiring him: why imagine that he'd suddenly gained in value in the 3 months since then? &, of course, he retains his value -- we can still trade him.

Some of us were fine with picks and pick swaps for an AD deal to make a profit and not deal with AD/Klutch/Rich Paul. That doesn't mean that Dawkins/Winger thought that also of course.

I could also see the Wizards not taking a higher offer based on the reports. Not really sure what the market is for AD. I believe they are not actively shopping him as well in order to prevent Davis from turning against management.

Wait weren’t AD’s comments all Spring basically that he liked how we did things but we weren’t close to (giving him the payday he wanted) contending, so he wanted a trade?

It seems more friendly now. Him working out in Wizards gear. He went to summer league with everyone else. Angling for that extension I think.

Those comments about wanting a trade were always second and third-hand…don’t recall hearing it directly from AD.

Right. If memory serves, I think what he did say was that he wanted to be sure the Wizards were serious about contending. I don't see how he could have meant contending *this year,* but whatever he did have in mind Dawkins & Winger seem to have convinced him of what we're about....

Is a 2/$120M extension possible? That's essentially one extra year, right?

I don't see AD agreeing to just one extra year. And even if he did, Bryson's numbers are optimistic.

Factoring Bilal at $15M (which is optimistic), the cost of our next two draft picks (assuming #13 in 2027 and #18 in 2028) and the cost of 5 vet minimum guys (meaning we jettison JC and Bub and a good backup center), still comes to $191M for 13 guys.

The 2nd Apron is $245M, but if history is a guide, it'll probably come in a bit lower, more like $242. That leaves just $51M for both Sarr and Kyshawn. Sarr on a max is $47M. Maybe we get him for $40M but I don't think it'll be cheaper. Some team will see our tight finances and extend a big offer in free agency just to force us to match. That leaves just $11M for Kyshawn, which is obviously not enough.

So if we pay AD anything close to $60M, we will lose Kyshawn, not to mention JC, Bub and a reliable backup center. Oh yeah, and we will pay a $50M luxtax fee. And in reality, AD will want at least a 2-year extension. And that scenario would leave no money at all for Riley and Tre the next year.

Basically, we can offer AD a one-year extension (beyond his option year) at maybe $45M, if we want to keep Kyshawn and we are willing to pay a nasty luxtax fee. And we can't pay him at all the following year.

And now you see why some thought this about the trade (I might add in the Trae trade as well).

I mean what’s the point? With NO EXTENSION, we already have him this season, and do you think he’s gonna decline his PO next season for 63 mil??

What I’m not sure about is after that is he unrestricted, or do we retain some sort of Bird rights? But regardless, do you think after next season anyone is going to offer him more than $60 mil at age 35?

At that point if everything has been going great we can resign him IF WE WANT TO. And if everything has been great and we’ve been winning and he’s been good, then he’ll want to resign here. It will be a 2 way street at that point, If he’s constantly been hurt and not productive we can move on. Why lock ourselves in on a 35 yr old injury prone player for 60+ million??

Especially when we have higher priorities like Sarr and Dybantsa to build around at that point …. It makes no sense. 2 years of AD is all we need, and we already have that.

And if he’s unhappy about it, who cares? We are paying him VERY WELL. And happy or not it’s in his best interest to not rock the boat, to be all in on this team, to play well , play a lot, and win, to show to us and everyone that he can stay healthy and perform at a high level so 2 years from now he can get another contract from us or someone else.

This is spot on. We already have AD for the exact length of time that we need him. There is no advantage whatsoever to extend him when there is so much uncertainty about his health and fit on the roster. Keep him for 2 years, and then reassess.

FWIW, we will have full Bird Rights so we can pay him whatever we want.

Wiz will surprise everyone and be 5th seed this year, Terd will go all in and max AD. Screenshot this post.

Or... AD doesn't get paid and just misses a hell of a lot of games.

David Aldridge making rational points here about the AD extension rumors. Bottom line: the Wizards are under no obligation to extend him and the best scenario is for AD to play great to start the season and then trade him at the deadline.

Don’t know if this was posted already, but it’s a good discussion about extending AD, possibly trading him for Duren, etc. Worth a listen.

On a max contract? If so, you are ultimately trading AD and Sarr for Duren.

It's a moot point. Duren is a BYC player in sign and trade deals. Now if Detroit signs him, five months later he can be traded in regular deals. Regardless, as many have articulated, he's not worth limiting their future ability to re-sign/extend their own players or make other moves if given a max contract.

That was your first mistake.
Probably need the ask the question of contract extension for both.
With that said, AD is a significantly better player and feel very confident he will remain so for the next two years.

I have a few issues with Duren, but strictly his fit makes a poor match with Sarr.
We need a high IQ/Awareness player that wont clog the lane next to Sarr & AJ.
Duren's poor blocking and overall rim protection arent due to physical tools, its because he simply doesnt process the game fast enough.

I could go on, but I just think its a poor allocation of resources and a poor fit.
I think people are going to feel very different about AD's value by Christmas.

:) Not by a long shot! :)
pcbothwel wrote:...Probably need the ask the question of contract extension for both.

On a piece of graph paper? Or, considering availability to play? I.e. games played....

pcbothwel wrote:...Duren, ...his fit makes a poor match with Sarr....

This is a long discussion, but in principle I never consider what people call "fit" in considering player acquisition. If you can add player "quality" do it! Worry about fit later. That's what trades are for.

In any case, I'm not deciding anything about player acquisition based on Alex Sarr -- love the kid, but if you've got a certainty mark by his name you're stretching facts.

pcbothwel wrote:Duren's poor blocking and overall rim protection arent due to physical tools, its because he simply doesn't process the game fast enough....

I see. How about Alex's poor rebounding? What is that due to? Or his 51% TS% vs 67% for Duren? What's that due to?

pcbothwel wrote:I could go on, but I just think its a poor allocation of resources and a poor fit.

I could go on as well, but... let's not bother.

pcbothwel wrote:...I think people are going to feel very different about AD's value by Christmas.

Obviously, AD's value comes down to the question of his availability at full strength. No one questions how good a basketball player he is! :)
