Actually, I see it as he is making more money over the next 3 years, then becomes a FA again (while still relatively young) under the new TV contract.
Yes, he's giving up a bit of security, but unless he goes south in the next 3 years, he's likely to make far more money overall. And given that he's going to a team that is bereft of scorers, he should be able to have some great stats to offer when he does become a FA again.
And, needless to say, he has a pretty high level of confidence in himself, so not surprised he would bet on himself doing well and earning a bigger payday in '16 or '17.
