You guys have a good young core with Wall/Blatche /McGee. It's gonna take them a while to learn how to play man up defense, and team defense. It's gonna take you guys a while to learn how to win. You have a good future. I see you guys getting another high pick this upcoming year, because I think you miss the playoffs. Then I see in the 2011-2012 season you make the playoffs. Your players are gonna get that taste of it, and your young players are gonna get really hungry. That's when you take off. You guys are gonna start making the second round, and becoming contenders in 2012-2013.
I see the Wizards beating Miami three times this season. Once in the regular season, and twice in the playoffs as the eighth seed.
Washington's got a lot of young talent. The Wizards have speed and height inside working in their favor. The leader of the Heat is Dwyane Wade. Hinrich and Young play him as well as anyone in the league. Bosh and Lebron are going to get theirs, but they'll have to score over taller players like Blatche, Yi, and McGee; as compared with the way they scored over Jamison and Butler. The Heat will have to defend Blatche, Yi, and McGee with Joel Anthony, a much shorter Udonis Haslem, and a very old Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Jamal Magloire. They've got experience but it is not going to help them catch Booker, Wall, and McGee streaking up the court. Old legs at playoff time might hurt them. I expect three superstars not getting the ball as much might affect them. How well will the Heat defend? If the Wizards make the 8th seed they'll give Miami trouble.
If Arenas remains a Wizard i think the Wizards take the Heat to 7 games this season.

If the Wizards and Heat played in play-offs it would be a very interesting match-up. You would have 2 positions where each team had the clear advantage(PG, C for Wizards and SG,SF for the Heat) and a compelling match-up at PF. The talent gap is too much for the Wizards to win the series, but they really could make life difficult for the Heat. I think the series could be a lot like the OKC/LAL series.

What excites me is that I'm not too worried about the defensive matchups. I'm not saying we can shut down Wade and Lebron. But when you ask, "who is going to guard Wade?", I'm not disappointed to answer, "Young and Hinrich". And when you ask, "who is going to guard Lebron?", I can reply, "Booker and Thornton". At least we're throwing out guys with length, quickness, strength and athleticism to stay with their stars (particularly if Booker pans out as the defensive force we hope he can be).

And the Heat has no one to match up with Wall.

Re: WizFans, what are your expectations?
I think if the Wizards are giving the Heat trouble because of their lack of a good defensive matchup on Wall they'll be quick to switch LeBron to him. They have the luxury of being able to rotate Wade/LeBron/Miller pretty easily throughout the three positions. Wade is the only one who really couldn't guard SFs, and maybe Miller on PGs.
But yeah, I agree with CCJ, we have the right squad to challenge the Heat.
However, after 3 years of painful first round exits vs. LeBron, it pisses me off just imaging how terrible the officiating would be with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh on the same court. As fun as an exciting Wizards/Heat series would be, I just can't see the refs letting it get that far. I'm generally not a skeptic of NBA officiating in the sense that it's rigged, but I just think refs feel compelled subconsciously to give the stars the calls. But hey, maybe Stern wants the Heat to be the villains, and we all know that the entire country will be rooting for us to take it to them, so maybe a little upset there would work out pretty well for the NBA. Who knows?

The Heat would throw LeBron on Wall, then it all ends. No chance guys.

Lebron cannot guard Wall. That's a joke. Lebron is quick, but he's not as quick as one of the quickest PG's we've seen in a generation. Wall would blow past him. (Well, at least he couldn't guard Wall in a year or so after Wall hones his jumper.)
That said, I think Mario Chalmers could do a pretty decent job on Wall. That guy can D up.

^ Agreed. Block a fast break layup now and then doesn't make you a great defender, especially when it comes to guarding the ball.

Given the Wizards luck this is what would happen. They would contain the triplets and suddenly Mike Miller would realize he is one of the best shooters in the NBA. The series would end in 6 games when MM torches the Wizards for 6 wide-open 3s in the 2nd half.

I think Chalmers would match up better against Arenas - Wall's speed might give Chalmers some problems. Wade is maybe the perfect athlete to defend Wall.
In any event, Miami would likely destroy Washington in a 7 game series, imo. Edit - best of 7 series, that is.

Re: WizFans, what are your expectations?
I'm cautiously optimistic.
I think Wall will be a stud from the get-go. That being the case,
McGee will breakout as a result of the presence of Wall. McGee
will still struggle to defend low-block Cs but will have other advantages
over a great number of his counter-parts.
I've been on AB's bandwagon for a while so I'm pretty confident that
once he recovers from his injury, assuming that goes OK, he'll be a
consistent producer that actually matches up with some of the elite
PFs in the NBA pretty well.
And I think Gil will be a stud this year. Having Wall, AB, McGee and
AT will allow him to play nearly as well as he did in his 'big 3' heyday.
All that said, solid cases can be made for a number of other teams as
well. This is how Vegas makes money.

Re: WizFans, what are your expectations?
Ah, the blissful optimism of the offseason.
I'll play along. Why not? Sure, Hinrich and Young will play D like a young Dumars and DJ (respectively) on Wade. Booker will play the role of Sane Artest or (The Prettyboy Thug Rick Fox during his Laker days) and provide physical D on LeBron. McGee will suddenly learn how to play help-side D. We'll even get DeShawn to pout his way into a buyout, to sign up with the Wizards for the stretch run. DeShawn will spend a month earning DNP-CDs, because he'll be off-site, secretly learning Krav Maga. His sole role will be to identify LeBron's pressure points and disable him.
It can work.

I feel like there's a bit of a redskin-like fantasy offseason going on. It's certainly possible that things could blow up, and we could shock the world w/a quick turn around. I think the safer bet is that the team is just a year or two away from mattering. Again, maybe we get shocked by how good this team is, I could see a starting 5 of Wall, Arenas, Thornton/whomever, Blatche, and McGee dominating on the floor in terms of speed and athleticism, Arenas is really the wild card here, and if he's cool and chill w/whats going on, things could be spectacular.
But, I think it's more likely that there are a ton of growing pains and we win 28-35 games, and have a top 8-10 pick. I also think its in our best interests to land one more quality prospect before we begin to make our runs, maybe two, though of course I've also heard about how lacking in depth and top end talent this next draft is (which makes landing Wall this past year so freaking amazing).
My expectations are simply that this team will be insanely fun and frustrating to watch, lots of ups and downs, some major dips in form, and at the end of the year, probably a record somewhere around 34-48. We'll see, but the best thing is that we got insanely lucky this year and we'll be really praising the gods at how lucky we were in terms of the lottery all year long.

Since I'm likely among the most optimistic about this season, I don't think the Skins analogy works here. Football and basketball are not really the same thing, and the addition of a RARE PG can turn a whole franchise around pretty quick. The Consiglieri wrote:I feel like there's a bit of a redskin-like fantasy offseason going on. Ironically, you could have compared the Skins to the Wiz any other year, since it has always been cancerous ownership that has held back both franchises. But now Teddy is in charge and I think you'll see evidence of that change throughout the organization.
Now, to 28 to 35 as a target win range. Last year, the teams that fit that range were the Knicks, Clippers and Pacers. You think this edition of the Wiz has that little talent? Everyone keeps trying to talk me down in the number of wins but I just haven't heard what I consider to be a logical argument that says the Wiz win that few. Call me a kook-aid drinker....

I think that people are looking at the talent on the team and projecting a season based on the players maxing or coming close to maxing their potential. Reminds me of when I was a kid in 1990, and I'd project Monk to get his 1000, Clark and Sanders to get their thousand, Riggs and Byner to get their 1800 etc. Cross sports analogies can be faulty but the principles the same. To win 40+ the team will have to have a lot go well. And very little go wrong. I'll grant that virtually anything that could go wrong last year, did go wrong.
But that doesn't mean that everything will go right this year. To have the season some of you guys project, Arenas will have to stick around and max his abilities, Wall will have to avoid freshman slumps and up and downs to some extent if not totally, Blatche will have to be healthy and not have issues w/the coaching staff that get him benched and produce at the level he did last year, NY will have to grow, McGee will have to play like he did during the summer league (the stats say he improved about 5-10% on last years summer league numbers-those numbers resulted in little in the regular season and up and down production after the veteran cancers were shipped out), w/no evidence available as yet that he can consistently do so, guys like Howard, and Thornton picked up in trades will have to contribute substantially and not be minuses (depending upon when/if Howard could come back), Booker can't be a bust, Seraphin needs to be healthy and back.
Basically all of our guys have to have the arrows on their production and season across the board show "up" rather than "down" or even "static". Is that going to happen? I don't think it is. I do think the Cavs are going to completely implode and totally fall to pieces, so that will remove one team thats ahead of us, but I still think at the end of the day, Boston, Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Chicago, and then there's the 8 seed. Whose got a legit chance of getting it, or bumping one of these teams down? New York, Indiana, Philly, Detroit, and us (New Jersey could make a huge turn around possibly, though Im skeptical). Some of you are betting on us, I'd bet on Philly or New York to do it before us. At the end of the day I expect us to finish 9th to 11th in the conference because i think these other teams have made improvements too, and we have too many questions to bet on us. Do i think it's possible? Sure. History shows that teams make the jump in one of two ways, incrementally slowly building a winner, 18 wins here, 24 wins there, 29 there, 32 here, 39 there, 44 there, or teams make jumps like San Antonio did after acquiring superstuds like Duncan and Robinson, doubling or even doubling and a half wins. We could be that team. We're young, fast, athletic, and totally free of veteran cancers except for potentially one, who would be shipped out, or sat at home if he's remotely disruptive. These guys are going to have fun this year, and they'll be fun to watch. The problem to me is that they're too young, too inconsistent, and not ready, to me.
I don't mind, i think to win it all, this team will need to suffer a little longer or be able to land a superstud like Miami did this year. What would do to me? A tough first half to the season, and an incredible finish to build on in '11-'12. That's what I'm hoping for, injecting some luck into the lottery, or just like in '09, a draft projected to be crap, being better than that, and us landing a small forward, 2 guard or something else could definitely need, and having a young team w/experience and insane athleticism to scare the hell out of the league in 15 months time, after they've had that experience from a first rough year and do not want to repeat it. I fear for a repeat of what happened to Cleveland, getting too good too fast, and never landing a second genuine difference maker for LeBron. We have a lot of accompanying pieces, but I do think if there's anyway we can get that second future top 10 guy in the league, we need to make it happen, and because of how Leonsis builds, I think we'll get our shot at making that happen, he'll be patient. If it doesn't happen, there is always hope that Blatche, Seraphin or McGee or even two of them could grow into that role, or even keeping a healthy Arenas.
The thing to focus on, is even in keeping my feet rooted to the ground, and a lot of us doing the same, we must never forget that the Boulez got its Ovechkin, the luck of the lottery finally went our way. That's what we need to remember, and that's what changes the complexion of a future of doubtful, fanciful maybe's that was ours just three months ago, to a future brimming with the brightest of possibilities, and genuine hope.

With the signing of Howard, I am now a koolaid drinker. This team should make the playoffs. They are very strong at PG, SG, and SF. They have the potential to be above average at PF, but are probably no worse than average at PF. They are weak at C, but they have 5 players for the coach to choose from to potentially have a quite effective Center rotation. IMO, that should make a fairly decent team.
Viva le tank! At this pace, it will never end.

Re: WizFans, what are your expectations?
Everything depends on McGee. If he improves in defending the paint the Wiz will surpass a lot of expectations and be a well make the playoffs without have to squeak in. If McGee struggles to defend the paint the Wiz will go nowhere and be the clippers of the early 2000's when they had D Miles, Lamar Odom, Quinton Richardson, etc., a young athletic team who thrives in transition and gets a ton of highlight reel plays, but still loses all the time.

Re: WizFans, what are your expectations?
I don't have any faith that McGee will be a reliable player this year. He'll be wildly erratic. He'll have exceptional games and terrible games. He'll dominate weak competition at times, and he'll be embarrassingly bad on defense against good players at times. Flip won't trust him.
I actually think Blatche is the key to this team. He's the only reliable player on the front court. He's the only one that can be relied upon to score with his back to the basket. He's the only one to be relied upon to play defense. He's our best power forward AND our best center. If Blatche gets healthy and plays well this season, we should be okay. I think Blatche is going to get a lot of crunch time minutes at C. What interests me is who is going to slide over to PF when that happens. Will it be Yi, Thornton, Seraphin or Booker? Hopefully, one of them can step up.
I really wish we had Singleton instead of Yi. Singleton was reliable. I'd be perfectly fine with a crunch time lineup of Wall, Arenas, Howard, Singleton and Blatche. That said, I'll understand if Singleton isn't retained. We ultimately need a young player to step up and fill that role. Hopefully, it'll be Seraphin or Booker.
