Re: Chicken Littles: Sky done fell! Draft Thread 2011
Prince, he's not significantly bigger than Melo. He's the same height and simply is not big enough to be a top PF in the NBA. You have to project how he'll fit in the NBA. Go back to Glenn Robinson when he was the #1 player in college and to Melo. They were both great inside as much as outside players in college - but when they got to the NBA, they were going to be strictly perimeter players and adjusted their games. That's what Jones will do in the NBA. We saw him get his shot rejected pretty much every time he went inside against UNC. And he's looked great out on the perimeter - taking his man off the dribble or hitting the jump shot. That's where he'll fit in the NBA. Beasley's had to make the same transition, and he's slightly bigger and came with less perimeter skills and more inside scoring and rebounding ability than Jones.
As for defense, he's simply not going to be as effective in the pro game as he is in college. Before seeing him against quality competition, I thought maybe he's in the Josh Smith mold on D, but he simply doesn't have that kind of explosiveness or instincts - though he can be effective.
Strictly an NBA 3, imo.

Jones is not 6'6-6'7' like Anthony is, nowhere close to that.

Give it a rest. Anthony measured at 6'7.5, 233 at the pre-draft camp. Jones is roughly the same size - probably a half inch taller.

Melo was 6'6' barefoot, 6'7,5 in shoes
Jones will be closer to 6'7- 6'8 barefoot, 6'8-6'9 in shoes
In addition, Melo carries more baby fat on him, Jones looks chiseled. These are things you can see. The Melo comparison is a terrible one but we will have to agree to disagree.
Yeah he struggled against Henson on the defensive but most NBA PF are that long, which is what makes Henson such an intriguing prospect. That was his first bad game of the season and was not a barometer of the type of player Jones is

Right now there is no clear #1 pick. It is still really early in the season, however.
If I remember correctly, Wall wasn't even thought of as the clear #1 pick until the 2nd half of the season.
I'm just waiting for the game to click someone soon and just dominate much like the Cam Newton of college basketball.

Ftr, Melo measured at 6'6.25, and the rule of thumb that you add 1.25 inches to the barefoot measurement - as players generally don't play barefooted, and the average sneaker adds 1.25 inches. In generally accepted basketball terminology, he measured at 6'7.5. And so what about how chiselled he was. Obviously, no 2 players are exactly alike. And you're saying the game was not a barometer of the type of player Jones is - because he struggled against a defender who's as long as most NBA PF's? Was that a typo, because it sounds like the reason we should use that as a barometer.

Re: Chicken Littles: Sky done fell! Draft Thread 2011
Interesting stat on Faried's developing offensive game. The last 3 games, he's averaged 14.7 FT attempts a game. But that has highlighted a weakness - he still shoots under 60% (ala Jordan Williams). Still, it's a positive sign. And earlier on, he out-statted Sullinger in their matchup. Even if he can't hit long jumpers, is a poor foul shooter, and doesn't matchup size-wise to big PF's, he'll help his team win in the NBA. He's like a souped up version of Booker.

I remember that Wall was thought to be the clear cut #1 pick after his senior year of high school, at least.
I do agree that there is nobody head and shoulders above anybody in this class at the top, however. Not entirely sure what the tiers are either, it's too early in the season.

Ford has Donatas Motiejunas as one of his current stock-risers, anyone have Insider access to the rest?
So-sad that we are seriously paying attention to draft-stock so-early in the season.

Do you guys believe the NBA draft is rigged as many do? If it is rigged, there's no chance we get another 1st overall pick. If it isn't, there's a legit possibility we get it two years in a row.

If that's true, that would mean that NOH would get the top 3 pick if they miss the playoffs so the NBA can get a return on their investment in buying the team.
Our only shot is if Ted twists some armes during the upcoming CBA negotiations and makes sure the league comes out smelling like roses. Maybe Stern rewards that with another top pick.

Motiejunas has been flirting with the lottery since his breakout performance at the Nike Hoop Summit two years ago. For the past two springs, he has surprised NBA teams by deciding to head back to Europe.
Chad Ford's Top 100
Follow Chad's rankings from now until draft night. Top 100
Last year, he arrived with Benetton and, as a young 19-year-old, took a role for the team coming off the bench. His numbers dipped a bit, but he still showed flashes that he could be special.
This season, he's showing more than flashes. With an increased role on his team, Motiejunas is finally looking like the lottery pick many scouts projected he would be. Through the first seven games of the Italian League, Motiejunas is averaging 13.4 PPG in 21 MPG. He's shooting 61 percent from the field and showing scouts that he's comfortable scoring inside and away from the basket. His body is finally starting to fill out, which helps, as well. He's still a below-average rebounder and doesn't add much in the way of defense, but if Motiejunas keeps this up, he looks like a lock for the lottery. One NBA scout told me he could go much higher than that, comparing him to a young Pau Gasol. If the NBA lockout takes out some of the better underclassmen in the draft, the scout's high-lottery projection might be right.
Sounds like Ernie's wet dream.

Jared Sullinger just had a monster game last night, he went for 40/13 in 37 minutes. 12/17 from the floor and 16/23 from the line.

Read thruough some draft profiles of seniors (since they are more sure to enter draft than others). Seems to have more suitable PG/SG/SF types than bigs. There was profile of Rick Jackson though without any information, except his stats for the season, so do anyone have any information of him?
Seems to be rebounding this year much better (12,8/35min).

Edit: sounds promising :

As far as I'm concerned this draft will feature a sure thing.
Kenneth Faried
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Ken ... 325/stats/
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/pr ... erId=37289
Faired has an even more impressive set of college achievements than Millsap had. This season he put up good numbers against Ohio State (better than Sullinger). He destroyed Florida. He has posted back-to-back 20 rebound games. Last season he fared well against Kentucky and IIRC Kansas.
Through his first 9 games his pace-adjusted per 40 minute averages are 23.6 points, 18.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 3.4 steals, 2.8 blocks. His PER is 46.8. Faired is shooting 64 percent FG.
This guy is destined to be another Blair or Millsap or Wesley Matthews. I've looked at college numbers over several seasons and known they would be good. NBA starter and someone Washington should draft is what I thought about each of them and Danny Granger. Faired is a special talent.

The incredible points and rebounds number can be partially explained by him playing at a no-name school. But when I see his blocks and steals relative to his fouls and turnovers, I have to believe that the kid is the real deal. It's also notable that his percentages didn't suffer when he faced big time competition.
He went 10 for 17 at Florida. He went 5 for 7 with 9 FTA's at Ohio State. He also grabbed 7 offensive boards at Florida and 5 offensive boards at Ohio State.
