See, it's the "with better defense" part that has me questioning. I don't doubt Zion on offense for a second. He isn't as versatile as some stars but he's going to be a star nonetheless. Defensively, he really needs to be able to play like a wing there in order to be better than Griffin in any sense that matters. If he's Blake Griffin's offense with Aaron Gordon's defense, how good is that?

More importantly, what kind of conditioning does he have to actually put up that kind of effort on both ends of the floor for 33+ mpg in an 82 game season? Those are questions that I think have trickier answers than a lot of people are willing to admit. It isn't even about injuries. There are very, very few players who have anything remotely close to that level of conditioning. James Harden went from being an excellent defender to a good defender who gets crapped on for his effort when he went from being a bench spark to being a full-time offensive focal point. It wasn't that Harden got worse. It was that he's one of the smartest players in the league where playing basketball is concerned and he understands that he can't possibly push himself that much on both ends of the floor that often and so picks and chooses his spots where he can be most effective and doesn't care what fans think. Lebron has been coasting on defense for quite some time now, too. Zion might be unique in his capability to handle that kind of load but he's only playing 26 mpg in a much shorter season right now. I'm not so sure it's a given he's going to be able to exert himself the way you're suggesting because no player is and Zion isn't showing signs of being exceptional in that respect.

I probably mentioned him before, but if we get an extra late lotto or mid-first rounder, I'd be inclined to use it on Darius Garland of Vandy. He's out for the season with a meniscus tear and is lacking in size and athleticism, but his skill set is tremendous, and he's quick. I think he's a better prospect than Trae Young is/was.

Dunno but he's got a 76.8 Defensive rating (meaning when he is on the floor, for 100 possessions the opposing team scores less than 77 points).

Do a search of all freshman in the past 10 years of the NCAA who averaged 18 or more points, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 9 boards and then sort by Defensive rating. In the Top 50 or so you find: Anthony Davis, Karl Anthony Towns, Nerlens Noel, Myles Turner, Hassan Whiteside, Steven Adams, etc. Solid defensive talent, or at least the raw potential showing up as Freshmen. Now of that crew, who do you think is atop the leader board when sorted by Defensive Rating.

Yep: Zion. Now maybe this is a product of small sample size, non-conference play, etc. Maybe he gets credit for playing with Reddish and Barrett and in a Duke system that chokes teams out. Okay. But he's not hurting them, and #1 in defensive rating counts for something. When you open it up to all seasons, not just Freshmen, he still tops the leaderboard.

Point being, what is the evidence that he can't play D? Because he looks chubby? Even chubby: his feet move quickly, his hands and eyes are active. He hasn't even started working with NBA trainers yet. Imagine how much quicker he could get if he did tone up and get Even Stronger...

Watching Indiana for solid freshman prospect Romeo Langford, veteran Juwan Morgan stole the show. He's not even listed as a 2nd rounder in the mocks I looked at, but he's a late bloomer who looks like he can be a nice role player in the NBA - who I'd target in the 2nd round. Tweener forward who looks like he's made himself into a 3 point shooting threat and even had a 10 assist game. He's shooting 69% from the field, but his FT shooting has gotten much worse every season. Langford's going to be a very solid NBA player - just needs to develop better range on his jumper.

Bol Bol apparently done for the year with a fractured navicular in his foot.

I blieve this is the same injury that Bill Walton suffered several times.

Well we have to draft this kid now- he already fits right in with this organization injury wise.

And also keep Wall and Dwight around to mentor him on how to keep yourself busy when your out for the year with your surgically repaired whatever.

Unless we move up in lottery we should target a solid wing like DeAndre Hunter, Keldon Johnson, or Okpala. The 3 Duke guys and Little I assume will be gone by our pick. No point guards, no centers need apply unless we somehow trade Wall.

Shout out to me on Bol, feel bad for him.

Anyway, look back at the drafts from Wall’s year onward. Except for a few guys like Kyrie and Davis, drafting appears to be largely a roll of the dice. It’s stunning really.

And let’s not kid ourselves, Zion is the first pick based on ticket sales alone.

If we have 2 picks around the end of the lottery, I'd lean toward Garland and Jarrett Culver of Texas Tech. I'd take Culver over Garland. Of course, I'll probably change my mind at some point, but those 2 would make a better backcourt than Young and Huerter will ever be, imo.

No. These Zion detractors are overthinking it. Hes a generational physical talent. The Bennett comparison is silly and the Blake comparison understates the slashing potential of a 285 lb guy with guard skills and explosiveness.

People getting stuck on the height forget Barkley was 6-4.

I would trade anything on our roster and our pick to get him if needed. He's that good. He'll be good right way too.

If we are somehow blessed to land Zion with our pick, our future suddenly becomes bright.

Barkley was actually 6-6, but I agree with your overall point. I think Zion is Barkley/Griffin with more guard skills. He's a can't miss prospect.

What? Zion has ELITE level athletic ability. Julius Randle was compared to Blake Griffin, not Zion. Way more talented.

Zion makes whoever drafts him in east (except maybe Cleveland) a playoff team. He’s a franchise changer. I’d worry about his 2nd contract re injuries at his dimensions, but that’s years down the road. No comparibles for this guy except Sir Charles.

Outside of Zion I think the draft is pretty weak. Even R.J. is a bit overrated IMO.

I was just watching some video of Ruzious' recommendation: Darius Garland.

The guy looks really good. He's got that Damian Lillard/Trey Young type of game predicated on the combination of a deadly pullup jumper with range off the dribble, and fantastic handles and hesitation moves. The guys will be a starting-caliber offensive player on Day 1. Defensively, he'll need some work and some muscle. I don't know anything about his training habits and work ethic, but if he's good on that front, he'll be an above average NBA PG for most of his career, with All Star potential.

A dream scenario would be to somehow trade Wall for a late lotto pick. Take Zion with our top pick and Garland with our late lotto pick. I would love to see this lineup as our core for the future:

PG Garland/Sato
SG Beal/Sato
SF Porter/Brown
PF Zion/Green
C Bryant/Green

The only problem is I can't figure out a way to acquire a late lotto pick without trading Beal. EG has left the cupboard bare of assets.

Earth2Ted wrote:Bol Bol is definitely my guy this draft. We need length, skill, shooting touch, shot blocking and he’s got all that.

Now we need to get Danny Ferry in as GM to draft him like Danny’s dad drafted Manute.

Then maybe Danny can bring in Mackie Shilstones son - if he has one. Shilstone was the guy who was brought in by the bullets to try and bulk Manute up, they asked him what he would charge the team, and he apparently said pay me by the pound.

And if Otto is still here at that point we could have him tag along as well - bulk rate deal, so to speak.
Does the injury to Bol impact his draft status?

doclinkin wrote:FWIW I think there is no Zion vs Bol debate. It's Zion 100% 20 times out of 10.

He's got handle and quickness and smarts and power and BBIQ and defense and rebounding and passing and charisma and coachability. And he plays a position of need in the league. Bol is a nice player in a league where a face up 5 is no longer an anomaly, but he has lateral quickness issues and a high center of gravity that will limit his versatility in a league where Bigs find themselves benched for defensive issues due to a steady diet of P&R and outside ball movement.

By contrast Zion can play in a 'switch everything' defense and still match up well with players positions 2-5. And be an overmatch for the opponent no matter which player switched on him. His outside shot was a question but it looks like he is steadily improving it. And if it continues to trend upwards, with his handle and quicks and size I could see him basically playing a Power Wing --to coin a position. He's basically playing 2 guard in many Duke sets. And his crossover is beating guard defenders with ease. The way LeBJ is a strength mismatch at 3-4, I can see a way to play Zion as a mismatch playing positions 2-4. As for leverage, he doesn't have a high center of gravity, he IS a center of gravity. He is the fulcrum for Archimedes lever, "Give me a long enough lever I can move the world". Put it on his back, he will move the world, or at least leverage us into the stars.
Sorry I was not online for the debate...

I think I would trade away rights to Zion and overhaul the roster with quality players from other positions in this draft.

Players who can dominate at both ends of the floor and not just match up but overwhelm whatever player they are faced against. No matter the 'position'. Zion is that player in this draft.
Zion at 5 is an improvement on Draymond Green.

Zion at 1 is an improvement on Jason Kidd...perhaps. Ben Simmons or Zion in the NBA game?
