Gaff should fire his agent. First he signs a 4 year minimum deal in which the last 2 years aren't guaranteed. Basically a no upside long term contract. Now he signs what appears to be one of the more team friendly extensions in the NBA.

As a Wizards fan I'm very happy of course

If he's Rudy Gobert level at age 28 when this deal is up... that contract will look insane especially if the NBA gets the TV money its looking for from Disney (ABC/ESPN) and WarnerMedia (TNT) and potentially another broadcast partner.

The NBA wants to triple the $2.6 billion in annual revenue it receives from the current TV deal. :o

The NBA wants to triple the $2.4 billion in annual revenue it receives from the current TV deal. :o

There's a chance by the time this deal kicks in for the 2023-24 season it will be about MLE money

What a frikkin click baiter Mayo is. I guess that's his job. I gotta laugh at the reaction in the trade board. More people like Huerter's deal at 4/65 and criticize Gafford's 3/40 - saying he was a product of Westbrook last season.

Nice work, makes up for the awful 5-year Bertans contract, the rotation will be interesting when Bryant returns

Hard to judge a deal at the beginning because you never know about injuries, etc.

But this one looks very good. Nice job Tommy

Agreed. It seems Tommy is on the ball planning well into the future.

Bryant isn't the future at center. This extension proves Gafford is. Why put 10-15 million for a backup center when you can always find Robin Lopez types for peanuts in comparison.

It's a good deal for the Wizards... especially compared to Jarrett Allen. Rim runners simply aren't going to get massive paydays nowadays. If Gafford becomes a full time starter as expected then the Wizards are getting real good value.

Is it really awful? Or just slightly above market value? Look at what Duncan Robinson got this off-season. Is he significantly better?

$9 million a year for Gaff factoring in the last 2 years of his rookie deal. That's an absolute steal.

Yes. And Duncan Robinson has more game than Bertans.

Eh... Bertans has a little more value to me as a high volume sniper from the PF position vs Duncan at SG or SF. Neither defends. Both are streaky. Both can range from en feugo to unplayable at times so I don't see much difference.

This is a terrific signing. Absolutely great. $13.4M a year is going to seem like peanuts 3-4 years down the road as NBA salaries continue to swell. It'll pretty much be MLE money. That's a good deal even if Gafford doesn't get much better (other than getting up to about 25 minutes a game).

The deal is in line with what Robert Williams and Richaun Holmes got. Holmes is a bit more established and polished, but he has also at the peak of his career and should plateau or decline in the next few years. Williams is very much like Gafford, only a year older and more experienced (and thus less expectation for improvement), and he looks to be more injury prone.

If Gafford develops a bit more, he could easily reach the Jarrett Allen/Clint Capela tier of full time starter, rim-running defensive bigs, only those guys make at least $20M a year.

Duncan is better with the ball in his hands. He can actually run a little secondary pick-and-roll as a ball handler. Bertans doesn't dribble at all. Your point about Bertans being able to man the PF position is valid though. Overall, I think I'd give the edge to Duncan, who seems to be even better as a shooter.

But the real issue is that both guys can get played off the floor in a playoff game against the right matchup. I don't like paying more than MLE money to a guy that I can't play in a critical playoff game.

The awful part was the 5th year, 5-year contracts typically go to franchise players or stars and are rare, Bertans was and is an anomaly with-respect to that 5th year.

It'll be interesting to see how this affects Bryant's next contract. If Gafford shows that he can play 30 minutes a night, then we might not want to spend much money on a second center. Rather than pay Bryant $10-15M to play 18 minutes a game, I'd rather look for a guy like Dario Saric or Taj Gibson to do it for less. Or maybe just sign a cheap minutes eater like Alex Len for the regular season, and ultimately phase him out in the playoffs in favor of a small ball lineup with Rui at backup center.

But if Gafford can only play 25 minutes a night, then there might be enough money to spend the full MLE plus maybe $1-2M more on Bryant.

Bertans being a UFA extension was a different situation and one that rarely ever works out unless the player is a star.

This is a solid deal. I think the best comparable is Wendell Carter who got 50/4 and while Carter is roughly the same age and more established, I'm not so sure he's the better player and I tend to believe in Gafford's potential more. Overall this falls roughly in line with that deal and seems like a decent value in general.

I wouldn't worry too much about Bryant. He still needs to come back and prove he's healthy. If he does, having both guys split time is solid and moving Harrell or just letting him go wouldn't be a major problem.

Pretty crazy that Gafford would sign a contract like this one. Talking about a guy that put up 20-11-4 per36 on 70% TS as a 22 year old in his 2nd NBA season. All he really needs is starter minutes to explode.

Locking up a core piece for the next 6 years is great.

Next 5 years, right? Two remaining on his current minimum salary deal, plus 3 on his new contract.
