barelyawake, The Black Keys are a solid group, based off of those clips. I'll have to nab me some of their records.

Well, that paper I was working on did well. I got an A-. My point in writing it was to apply postmodern thought to two Bob Dylan songs, and in my opinion his two best songs, with Desolation Row and Ballad of a Thin Man.

Desolation Row - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RenHNO19XKs
Ballad of a Thin Man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFYlhw3g4P8

My paper’s point was to show that Dylan was making the moral statements of ‘Freedom’ and ‘Equality’ more complex. He no longer believed in absolute truths by the mid sixties, swaying towards a more postmodern world view, and therefore, a less Enlightenment world view.

I used examples of how Mr. Jones’s education means nothing in Ballad of a Thin Man, since he is so confused and wandering the world. Many freak show/circus references reside in this song, including the one-eyed midget and the sword swallower. They both judge Mr. Jones by calling him a freak and telling him to give them something of use (ie milk) or to get out. In the song, Mr. Jones is in fact called a freak, by the geek, no matter how well-read or educated he is. Mr. Jones, regardless, will never be a part of the elite Enlightenment universe of absolute knowledge.

Desolation Row is full of images of washed up people and “freaks” and other outliers to the Enlightenment/absolute truth world out there. Bob Dylan’s early songs focused a lot on injustice, but he eventually figured out someone always ends up on the short end of the stick. With Desolation Row, Albert freaking Einstein is nothing but a hobo, sniffing drainpipes. The commissioner, who is an elected official, is blind. T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, who are two famous poets in the early 20th century, were advocates for a canon of literature, picking the best of literature to teach and discuss. This is Enlightenment thought bleeding into the elitism of 20th century literary theory, and they are busy fighting on the Titanic, the penultimate symbol of the power of the elite. They are doomed to hit that iceberg eventually.

This was a summarized version of my paper. It was hard to shrink it so much, so I hope it makes sense. I suggest those two songs (and everything by Bob Dylan for that matter) to anyone who is a fan of some great lyrics.

Interesting stuff on Dylan. Thanks for the post. No doubt Bob Dylan was one of the greatest songwriters ever. Off the top of my head, I'd group the greatest songwriters thusly (of course, based on personal preference; certainly forgetting more than one songwriter; and forgoing country music):

G.O.A.T.
John Lennon

Tier 1 -- These are the once or twice in a decade guys
Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Lou Reed, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Joey Ramone, Blind Boy Fuller, Jim Morrison, Robert Johnson, Syd Barrett, James Brown, McCartney

Tier 2
Elvis Costello, Ian MacKaye, Nick Drake, John Lydon, Henry Rollins, Ben Gibbard, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits, Cat Stevens, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Joe Strummer, Frank Zappa, Marvin Gaye, Ray Davies, Curtis Mayfield, Mick Jagger, Rakim, B.B. King, Toots Hibbert, Zack de la Rocha, Roger Waters, Robert Plant, Jack White

Tier 3
Thom Yorke, Michael Stipe, Randy Newman, Beck, Ice Cube, Ben Harper, Jeff Tweedy, Chuck D, Sandman, George Clinton, Trent Reznor, Tupac, Bob Mould, Peter Gabriel, Brian Warner, Eddie Vedder, Jonathan Davis, etc...

Working on being added to the list:

Sufjan Stevens
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoQzWb_f ... re=related

Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5rhhQby ... re=related

Bill Callahan (of Smog)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J-WpgOzW9A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g_I_yf2 ... re=related

Dave Davison (of Maps and Atlases)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ0NlQnyeFo

Stephin Merritt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbpYg96R ... L&index=18

Bon Iver
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4E9412x ... re=channel

------------------------------------

And speaking of Tom Waits, here's the single greatest drunk song in history. The brilliant part about it is Tom has never played the song the same way twice (for obvious reasons). I can't find a good version of it on YouTube, but as I said there are thousands of versions...

There are so many great acts on your list, ba. Costello, Lennon, Gibbard, Reznor, White, Hell, all of them! I agree, also, about Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver being on the fringes of the great song writers, as well as Oberst (Bright Eyes especially). I have Oh Detriot stuck in my head lately from Stevens.

Another act that I think should be up there is Colin Meloy and his band The Decemberists. They are amazing live, as well as some great musicians. Meloy is their primary songwriter and writes in a Dylan Thomas (the poet) style of lyrics. They combine the Beatles sound with old British folk music to make some very unique songs.

Yep, I've heard The Decemberists before. I agree, those guys are great lyrically. Eli, The Barrow Boy always makes me think of:

Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwgAWDy2 ... re=related

Which reminds me, I forgot Steve Winwood and about a thousand other guys -- like Jim Morrison for God's sakes, not to mention KRS1, Mos Def, will.i.am, Eminem, Snoop and Slick Rick. But, I was just typing fast. And I realized I have no women. Sorry Ms. Franklin, Ms. Hill, Ms. Smith, Ms. Chapman, Ms. Lennox etc. So, obviously an incomplete list. Anyway, Winwood (like Page, Clapton and now Jack White) wrote utterly classic albums for three different bands (Blind Faith, Spencer Davis, and Traffic -- not to mention his solo career). That 70's sound is what lots of bands are copying now, as Black Keys mimic bands like Bad Company and lots of the Raconteurs' cuts grab from Zep.

Blind Faith (One of my favorite songs of all time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq5oJaqD ... re=related

Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFaT69CyyKU

And I can see why you say Muse puts on a good live show. They certainly hit all the spots to get a crowd amped. And speaking of that, takes me to a story about Metallica concerts. I've been to way too many concerts -- everything from mosh pits in London to underground rap battles in south east. Probably the freakiest thing I've ever seen in any concert (and I've seen an entire crowd covered with blood at a GWAR concert, and been to Slayer, Children of Bodom etc), is 100,000 people (lit in red) all chanting, "DIE... BY... MY... HAND..." for ten straight minutes. After about three minutes, especially if you're high, you look around and think if Kirk said to kill and eat the front row, no one would think twice about it.

Speaking of songwriting (and back to present day), Dresden Dolls are one of those bands whom I like as a concept, I just can't stand listening to. There are always a few of those bands around. Syd Barrett, the Melvins, Frank Zappa and even Sonic Youth (whom I love) had some songs like that -- historic, unlistenable tunes. "OK, I admit it's brilliant and going to cause ripples for decades. Might even change the art form entirely. Now, could you please turn it off?"

The Traffic song is awesome. That's the first time I've ever listened to it. Reminiscent of Jethro Tull with the flute. Great stuff. I agree about Dresden Dolls, too.

I wish I could go to more concerts. I just can't front the cash. I recently saw NIN in the fall, and probably should go see them again, since they are coming for their farewell tour alongside Jane's Addiction, who are on a reunion tour ironically. But, with The Decemberists coming in (and they are my fiance's favorite band, as well as one of mine) and my tight wallet as of late, I just can't go to every show I please. Dave Matthews and Incubus are coming through Kansas City, and I might be able to make just enough to go see them, but I don't know.

I did catch Modest Mouse for a second time last march, though. Do not trust any television appearance by them to gauge their true power live. Isaac Brock is a great front man. He demands attention with his presence. Also, don't piss him off lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8vOG47ZP3Y At the show here in KC, someone demanded him to play more old songs, right after he played the first track of their first album. He got pissed off. Beware to all of you who don't like naughty words!

Also, since this song has been stuck in my head as of late, I provide one of the best songs of the past twenty years.

Yep, I'm a big Modest Mouse and Radiohead fan. Have seen both live. And no doubt Isaac Brock and Thom Yorke belong on the list. As I mentioned, Modest Mouse to me is an updated Talking Heads -- with a splash of Cure and 80's punk. But, my favorite Radiohead cut is "No Surprises." Keep in mind, I like William Carlos Williams-like Imagism that is deceptively simple. I think that song is nearly perfect. It reminds me of what IMO is the only flawless piece of literature I've read, "No Exit" by Sartre -- which pinnacled with perhaps the greatest line of philosophy, "Hell is other people."

Speaking of influential "alternative" bands, IMO post-punk (which wasn't actually post-punk, since it started basically alongside punk, and sprang from the psychedelic wing of punk) went like this: Syd Barrett and Zappa (could probably throw some Lou Reed in there). Then, Kinks (start of the "post-punk" sound, though labelled as protopunk), Gabriel's Genesis, Bowie, and King Crimson (some call the first "progressive" band). Then, Devo. Pivotal band. Devo was the start of modern "alternative music." Then, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, and the Smiths. Then, the big alt movement -- Police, Joy Division, Jesus and Mary Chain, Eels, Violent Femmes (could be punk), Pixies, B52's, Cure, R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, Portishead (probably electronica), Radiohead, and Beck (another pivotal band). And eventually, Weezer, Gorillaz (probably hiphop), Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie.

Speaking of R.E.M, talk about a band "losing their religion." R.E.M.'s first two albums are priceless. Halfway through "Green," they went into an unrecoverable tailspin into trashy pop. And I don't put Clash, Husker Du, B.A.D., P.I.L., Sonic Youth or Fugazi in here (nor should be fIREHOSE and the Minutemen IMO), because I consider those bands punk. However, keep in mind, I tend to label all music I like as punk. And grunge, goth, and electronica (Art of Noise, O.M.D., Daft Punk, E.L.P., Kraftwerk, Postal Service, Tangerine Dream, Meat Beat Manifesto, Coil, Fatboy Slim, Silver Apples, Moby, 808 State, Chemical Bros, Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics etc) are unto themselves. And RATM, Primus, Jane's Addiction and Korn (I don't care who calls them rapcore) are their own category. I might have the dates wrong, but that's basically the progression as I see it. And again, off the top of the skull, so I probably missed some.

Not sure whether these cats were posted, but I'm feelin' them... They bring that Native Tongues-sorta vibe back to hip-hop much the same way as Sound Providers:

Jazz Addixx (from VA):

Sound Providers:

I released this vintage EP of Juice Crew material earlier in the year... Here's a Kool G Rap cut that is as good as anything he has ever done... Marley's reaction after our listening session? "That's iller than 'It's A Demo'":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnJJ6S2StQo

And here are a few joints by DJ Format with a MC named Abdominal... I'm going to be rhyming on a few cuts on Format's next LP, so........:

HOF post Pitbull. Never heard Jazz Addixx or Sound Providers. Have to buy all of them now. Obviously, I know Kool G Rap. But, that was a great clip. And good luck on (and post) your singles. Plus, keep the underground rap posts comin', please. Love those tracks. Instant classics.

No problem, BA -- glad you found something you liked... Will definitely post the clips of cuts I record with Format once the songs are released.

Truth be told, I'm partial toward the Jazz Addixx as I was friends with the MC's older brother growing up... I caught up with the rapper a year or so ago and he said I had inspired him to become a MC and said he wanted to record with me. It hasn't come to pass... Yet... Couldn't have been prouder that I actually made an impact on someone through my passion for the art... And it certainly doesn't hurt that's he's great at his craft.

Feel like going through the evolution of ska to modern bands (sorta... too lazy to actually put them in order -- so, no one flip if I have wave two mixed in with wave three). And FYI, if you don't know already, roots are rastas and rudie/rude boy/rude boi developed into what rastas called punk/ska rockers (from the Jamaican slang for hoodlum). There's about 40 years worth of history to that, which I'm breezing over, but I'm not writing an essay. And my song selections reflect the fact that I don't want to write essays about history as well. Anyway, reggae clubs were huge in D.C. back when the punk movement was strong here, because that's where all the punks hungout (especially the Roxy). And yes, I should be lashed for not including Desmond Dekker and Prince Buster on my list. I'll just keep adding bands here over a few days.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Someday I Suppose
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRXUQ4IKKHY

I just have to expound that I believe this song is brilliant -- while any other song by the Mighty Mighty (besides their covers) to me is unrealized potential. Suffice to say, I love this band and hate their songs, except this one -- which IMO is one of the most brilliant ska songs of all time (once you actually breakdown the lyrics and think how it fits into the ska history and mind set). Basically, the point is nothing is of importance beyond the current reality -- which is ska theory in a nutshell. Reality is nonsense... enjoy... That, like Dadaism, is ska theory.

FYI No Doubt's new album is supposedly going to be back to their ska roots, and even more traditional ska than they have ever done. At least, that's what I've heard. And indeed I edited a lot, either for self-censorship (thus, no Judge Dread songs such as "Will I what?" etc) or my own tastes (thus, no Big D and The Kids Table, Aquabats, etc). Realized that, to keep with punk tradition, this section had to end with:

Well, figured I'd list my favorite rap song of all time (to wrap up the hip hop section, since I feel like going back to rock or even industrial). So, this thread listed most of the influencial songs IMO. But, when it comes down to me, my top two (which I actually think had very little impact on the progress of rap) are from the same artist (sorry P.E., KRS1 and Rakim):

Bring The Pain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PexgN0aZhKA

M.E.T.H.O.D. Man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpL0xVIYbnU

And C.R.E.A.M. is probably in my top 20 too. And the Chemical Bros remix of Bring the Pain would probably be in my top 30 too.

Just gotta list some songs everyone knows to wrap up. These are the songs you gotta list in a rap section (I'll keep adding throughout the game):

RUN-DMC - King Of Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fumgOJLFSHw

Eric B. & Rakim - I Ain't No Joke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu4RM1Iq-wg

Public Enemy - Rebel Without A Pause
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm7dZe0b8Rk

Public enemy - Shut'em down (P.E. were great live, unlike many rap artists. The show started with a guy on stilts wearing a KKK robe, and sloshing around a bottle of Jack, wandering out onto the stage. And he starts cursing and laughing at the audience. Everyone starts booing and after five minutes you hear the bass of this song kick in, and Chuck yellin', "WE GOTTA SHUT 'EM DOWN, YA'LL.")

A Tribe called quest - Jazz (We've Got) & Buggin' Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_-4GFV7 ... PL&index=3

Stop The Violence Movement - Self Destruction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWxztZs_atM

Sound of da police
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VRZq3J0uz4

KRS-One - Step into a World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnydK0ph ... PL&index=1

L.L.Cool J - Mama said knock you out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7l250E5uM4

Cypress hill - Aint goin out like that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1b3uTa2foc

Brand Nubian - Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxBvUqLs_eU

Beasties - Hey Ladies (extra credit if you name ten of the samples without lookin' 'um up. Before sampling laws, so they went sampling crazy in their first albums -- which made great music. I can name maybe nine samples in this song without looking. I believe there are fifteen to twenty -- which might be a record. Actually, if you want to know rap/funk history, just break open this song.)

Beasties - So What'cha Want (my favorite Beasites' song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzaFGMQR ... re=channel

Beasties - Sure Shot (FYI "Ill Communication" was going to be released with no lyrics, because it was their first album where they played all the instruments. So, it was going to be just a jazz thing. They decided at the last moment to freestyle over the music. So, if you love that album, it almost wasn't made. They started by just yellin' lyrics while jamming "Sabotage," and from there said f' it and filled up the album with freestyle. And for that, "Sure Shot" might be their best pure rap song ever. So, because it's freestyle, one of my favorite lines in rap history is, "WELLLL, I'm that kid in the corna -- all f**ked up and I wanna so I'm gonna take a piece of the pie. Why Not? I'm not quittin'. Think I'm gonna change up my style just ta fit in?")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5GXj1jwb1U

Snoop - Gin and juice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czyfws7O ... re=related

Lords Of The Underground - Chief Rocka
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7ZtT93Xo8Y

Eminem - The Way I Am
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFxfoM3b6jQ

Jay-z - U don't know (personal favorite Jay-Z song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FKqcsVds44

No good version of "Colors" on YouTube. And there's several I didn't get to. But, here's some songs you gotta have in any discussion about rap (because here's where it all started):

Jam On It - Newcleus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKB0-pTq30M

Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVcx8Jn2 ... re=related

Herbie Hancock - Rockit (Forget Sugarhill, without this song there would be no rap.)
