Nate,
wasn't your half last Sunday? How'd it go?
I see a couple different Nate's in the results but not sure which one
is you.

No. It's this Sunday.
dobrojim, what is your opinion on getting a massage a few days before the race? Will it help, hurt or make no difference? I know not to get one a day or two before, but I'm thinking of getting one today (4 days before).

I've gotten massages a day or 2 or 3 before a big race. I've even gotten
a brief massage right before a race. I think the key factor there is
the therapist and how well they understand what is needed at
that specific point in time.
bottom line - I doubt it could hurt you and it might help at the margain

Finished the 1/2 Marathon today. I absolutely crushed my goal time.
I ran it last year in 1:41:30. My goal this year was 1:40, which is a 7:37 pace. I ended up going 1:34:46, which is a 7:14 pace.

Congrats nate! A bunch of Columbus friends of mine ran it too.

good job!
not sure what's going on why my leg right now
I ran a 10K Sunday before last. I was surprised to run as slowly (44:30)
as I did coming off the nice half 3 weeks earlier. Well a couple
days after the 10K my hip/leg started hurting kinda like IT band issues.
I've never really had IT band problems. And there is a rash on my hip
that I showed my co-worker and she said 'spider bites'. All I know
is the pain radiates down my leg. I've been popping ibu for the last 3-4
days at 600 mgs, 3x/daily. That takes care of the pain mostly, until it
starts to wear off. But I don't like taking NSAIFs for prolonged periods.
Made an appt to see my MD tomorrow. NY is a week from this Sunday.
I need this to go away.

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
Are you running a full marathon or a half in New York?
I hope the leg gets better.
I'm in serious pain right now from the run. My quads are absolutely killing me! I don't think I'm hurt or anything; it's just the usual post-race trauma. I can barely walk right now, and I've got a Y-League basketball game tonight. I figure I'll take about 4 advil and then try to loosen up on the stationary bike before tipoff. I'm sure I'll pay for it the rest of the week though.

did some serious mountain biking today 20+ high pace miles. i-am-beat! this was first time out riding again since my unfortunate facial 12 days ago. beat, but feeling good
oh i also ran again end of last week after not running for a month or more and ran 3 miles without even breaking a sweat probably 8 minute miles or something. legs were sore next day though.

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
this was an unpleasant surprise
I was diagnosed with shingles on TUES. Freakin shingles.
(the return of the chicken pox I had as a small child).
I've spent the last week taking 600 mgs of ibu 2-3x a day to deal
with the pain. Today was the first day I didn't take anything until
after I got home.
I am supposed to run the (full) NYC marathon Nov 1. Right now
I have no idea how that might play out. Before feeling too sorry
for myself, I was in touch with one of my best friends in the world
that I was expecting to stay with that weekend on Long Island. That had to
be re-planned due to his son's extreme clinical depression and the
domestic uncertainty that comes with that for their household.
That's putting it mildly. I can't imagine as a parent what it must
feel like to have a child in a suicidal state. Grateful to have mostly
normal good kids with no serious issues anything close to that. Things
didn't have to work out that way for me.

dobro, very sorry to hear about the shingles, that's random and it sucks. Horrible to hear about your friends kid, it makes me really worry about mine b/c my first born girl is 3 and has been exceptionally dramatic since she was 2; glad you are able to count your blessings, that's the way to do it, I pray it works out for your friend.
On the exercise note, hitting a hotel for the next few days w/o a gym. I HATE running for the sake of running, I have to be chasing a ball. I'm going to try to do burpees does anyone else have any good kick your a$$ body weight exercises?

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
Man, my weight has been yo yoing like crazy, got down to 161 at one point, it shot up to 167, after a couple of weeks I've managed to get it down to 164 again. Be nice to get below 160 for my birthday (around thanksgiviing) but I don't think that's going to happen.
Gotta stop eating ice cream with the kids. And when I visit on the weekends, they have basically an all meat household. There are no vegetarian options there.
Well, really what it is is, if I don't eat meat and eat a lot of fruit (smoothies) and vegetables (veggie wraps, veggie max at subways, etc.) I lose weight, if I forget to buy fruit one week and just eat pasta and cheese all week I gain weight. Well, and I have to drink icewater instead of juice and beer.

Help us, Obi-wan Leonsis. You're our only hope.

Sucks about the shingles, dobrojim. How long is it supposed to last?
By the way, did you train specifically for this race or do you basically train all year round and just run the races when they come?

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
shingles is a bit of a black box so no one really knows
how long my outbreak may last.
I started feeling pain early-middle of last week. Was on ibuprofen
steadily and heavily but yesterday was the first day I didn't feel
like I needed anything for most of the day. So I seem to be getting
better. I don't feel too bad today.
I thinking of going down to MCM Sunday to possibly pace one of
my running buds for the last 10 or so. This obviously depends
on how I'm feeling by then.

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
JImmy, very sorry to hear about what you're dealing with. W. Unseld, as someone who has experienced severe mental illness in his family, as well as a father of an almost two year old, I know you must be really concerned.
That said, I would urge you strongly against assuming the worst. Mental illness can be managed and people who are otherwise pre-disposed to depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, etc can get better. Early intervention is a big key though -- and I'm not talking about drugs. If your daughter does indeed have some issues, the sooner you can give her the tools to cope with them, the better shot she has at happiness and stability in the long term.
I know this place can be relatively anonymous and we talk mostly about basketball, but I know I am not alone when I say that my heart goes out to you and hope you things take a positive turn for you and your family. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

bump
shingles, schmingles
I ran a 3:35 in NY today (yesterday). Usually in the fall I'm faster
but I'll take it, being a Boston qualifier. that said, I had very poor execution
of a strategic plan. I was so excited to just be there,n actually running. I ran a 1:41
first half and a 1:55 second half. I should know better. That's def NOT
what you want to do. Oh well. The fam had a great time. Friday was my
oldest's BD. Hard to believe she is 14.

Well F.
Starting physical therapy (again) next week to build strength back up in the area. I admit to being depressed that at 32 I've had more lower body injuries in the last few years than most 50-year olds. I don't know if it's crappy genetics, domino effect of one injury to the next, but it sucks.
I worked my ass off this spring/summer to get back into shape, and now I fear that it's all going to go "to waste," the low-grade seasonal depression will kick as the days get shorter, and I'll be feeling like bloated crap again soon.
Good news is that DC just re-opened the pool at Wilson High School near my house and it's supposedly beautiful, so I'm going to give lap swimming a try. I have concerns about not being able to zone out with an ipod or TV screen during a workout; Mrs Fish says that it's "peaceful," but I don't do peaceful so well.
If anyone has any uplifting stories or pearls of wisdom/encouragement, feel free to share them today. I haven't felt like myself lately.
This injury has been really frustrating. Nearly four months of physical therapy -- and limited progress -- later, I had an MRI on Monday. Just got back from the doc and I have a small tear in my patella tendon.
Lovely.
The treatment course stays basically the same, but I need to get more aggressive in the strength building arena. Tis the stuff New Years resolutions are made of.
On a better note, I downloaded a popular iPhone app called "One Hundred Pushups" and have been following their routine so far and am already showing progress. Woot. Pretty soon I'll be challenging Earl Boykins to benching contests.

Re: Official Workout/Fitness Thread (Re-born)
^ Yeah, I think I talked about those on the first page of this thread. The only one I tried was the pushups and I didn't last the whole program but after about two weeks I could definitely feel a difference in strength.
