If Cousins has another meltdown to the point where management will trade him, he'd be an enormous risk to take on. He's got a big long term contract now. Not sure I'd want to go out and acquire that AND give up a package of nice players for him in the process.

I think the Cousins ship sailed when he signed that new deal. Maybe we can revisit him in three or four years.

Actually its 9.5 for two seasons. Not exactly cheap but it is fair. And its nice that its only two years. His deal should be really easy for Atlanta to move if they want to go that route.

Atlanta has an interesting situation. I think they've got Millsap and Horford on favorable deals but they spent too much money for too many years of too little upside in Teague and Korver IMO. They don't have a ton of young upside either.

They're in a bit of a weird place. Not a bad team, but very little upside. If they could swing a big time free agent their ceiling could be really good. It has to be a FA though. If I'm them, I'm not dealing Horford. He's the guy that would be the second banana that pairs with your star to make you a contender.

I think they're going to have to nail a late lotto or mid round draft pick Indiana-style in order to become a contender.

It's no scarier than keeping Andray Blatche, who you advocate. Cousins is a much better, more talented version of Blatche.

Denver has $72M in committed salary next season and $60M the season after.

They're clearly going to have to make a major move within a year and just trading Faried before his extension may not even be enough.

With Gortat in tow, I'd go after Gallinari hard at the deadline -- Ariza's expiring plus whatever filler (maybe GRJR).

Give Gortat a big fat two year extension. Roll with: Wall, Beal, Porter, Webster, Gortat, Gallo, Nene. Win a bunch of games and a few playoffs series over the next few years. Gallo, Nene, and Gortat all come off the books together after 15-16. Sign Durant. Joy, laughter, and parades ensue.

Gallo is very very overpaid IMO. And him coming off a major knee injury means he should have pretty poor trade value. I wouldn't take his deal.

Denver is at 70 million in sallary next season, but they've got an entire team for 70 million. And then when its extension time for Faried in two years, their salary drops to 41 million in commitments. They don't have to make a move.

If I'm going to try and pry someone away from Denver, it'd be Faried.

Gallo is very good and he's just 25. Yes, he's coming off a major knee injury, but he should be good to go by the deadline and back to full strength next year. I think he's a pretty safe bet to be worth his contract at 26-27.

I'd love to get Faried, but I think Denver would much rather move Gallo.

Agreed. Unless we move Porter/Webster in a separate deal (or to a third team in a 3-way), I'm not seeing a Gallo trade making sense for Washington.

I could also see them moving Chandler, although that helps them less from a financial perspective.

Agreed. Right now he's a massive bargain. I'm curious about his market when he hits free agency. He's a pretty unique player.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a deal like Millsap, maybe he gets a 3rd year. If the Wizards have the cap space at that point, they should make an offer. If the Wizards can have a core of Wall, Beal and Faried with max cap space, that could be very appealing to Durant. Center would be an obvious issue for that team, but their also seem to be competent if not spectacular vets available in the 2 to 3 million dollar range. I think Porter probably has to be moved to free up the cap space.

Hmmm. A Gortat/Faried/Dano frontline might be a disaster on defense. Lol.

Just gauging interest ...

Wolves trade Derrick Williams and JJ Barea

Wizards trade Ariza and Vesley

I think there would be a ton of interest if Williams' option had been declined and Porter was healthy. Williams probably could be dumped for cap cap space if the Wizards want to make a run at Monroe. However if Gortat shows indications of re-signing the salary next year isn't a big deal.

I like Barea a lot for the Wizards since all the Wizards guards who should be in the rotation are big enough to guard SGs.

I agree with this. Gallo isn't great, but he can be very good. The thing is he can create shots for himself, which is something this team struggles with. He's been miscast as a #1 or #2 option his entire career. If he were the 3rd banana behind Wall and Beal he'd thrive.

Depending on how the season goes with Nene and his health would you do Nene for Bargnani? It'd shave a year off of Nene's deal and considering Nene's health and heart it might not be much of a down grade.

^ I might consider it if the Wiz truly are out of it at the All Star Break. If the Knicks are desperate enough, maybe we can also get a first out of it.

I don't think I could stomach watching Bargnani play for the Wizards. Maybe if the Wiz could a pick or two out of NYK.

Just for the hell of it, I ran Bargnani through my statistical doppelganger machine. The results for 7-footer are hilarious because...well...Knicks.

  1. Lamond Murray -- SF
  2. Tim Thomas -- SF
  3. Raja Bell -- G/F
  4. Ben Gordon -- SG
  5. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf -- G
  6. Darrell Griffith -- G
  7. Willie Green -- G
  8. Linas Kleiza -- SF
  9. Tony Delk -- SG
  10. Josh Howard -- SF

For a 7-foot SG, the Knicks gave up a future 1st round pick, two 2nd round picks, PLUS Camby, Novak and Richardson. Novak was plain BETTER than Bargnani last season. But then again, Bargani was the leader in that all-important stat: points per game.

Are we sure that Isaiah Thomas isn't influencing the Knicks FO?

I was actually thinking of something along similar lines. We'd want to wait until close to the deadline to get Porter healthy and adjusted. But it's a definite maybe from me.
