Ha! Wm S. Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch while detoxing from opioids in Tangier, Morocco. Since you reference Steely Dan I figured you might be um intimately acquainted with the band name's origin...

Love Manu Chao btw.

Nowadays I am a huge fan of Spotify's ability to program a station based on the music I like. Not so much the daily suggestions, but the 'explore weekly'. Fun to assemble play lists of bands and music the steps and my kid have not heard yet and for them to tug my sleeve to other artists.

OR to randomly look for genre blends to see who has created a playlist out of it. Like, speaking of sitar, say a search of "Bangra Dub" turns up a song I like. Then I make a radio station of that song, click the smart suggestions button and end up with string of songs that by themselves will take you on a psilocybin dream wander:

As I've probably mentioned, I knew Fagen back around 1970-72. I'd moved from Chicago to NY, & a close friend of mine there was a Bard graduate, a classmate & good friend of Fagen's. (That's how he was known, btw -- I'm not sure I ever even heard his first name back then).

He was writing arrangements for Jay & the Americans at the time, but Stravinsky was in his headphones like 18 hours a day! Nice guy & a funny guy.

I never got to meet William Burroughs, but he was a hero for sure. I used his words to a friend as he left in an ambulance for the hospital where he died -- "I'll be back in a minute" -- to end a poem a couple years ago. The poem's in a book that hasn't been published yet; I'll look for it & post it here....

This kid is so talented. These should not go so hard

Funny though programming radio stations based on his covers introduced me to loud hard artists I would not have bumped into otherwise.

never easy

I listen to everything really, I grew up playing classical piano, then jazz... theres a time and place for everything though, I'm not going to listen to Rachmaninoff when I'm bench pressing in the gym...

It's not all super high intensity stuff though, generally I don't listen to that type of metal at all, Metallica has written a lot of beautiful music like Orion or Nothing Else Matters or The Unforgiven.... didn't elton john call Nothing Else Matters one of the best songs ever written a few years ago?

Here you go....

Despite What They Say

There’s not a lot of time in this
Universe. Mostly it's made out
Of space. We don’t walk unendingly

Some narrow corridor but spend
Our one explosive moment in
A vast & light-filled place.

So keep in mind what Burroughs said
As he left for the hospital
On the day he died: “I’ll be back

In a minute – stay right where you are.”

I wasn't challenging you -- just curious.

Nor is "the beautiful" restricted to things that are beautiful. Late Beethoven piano sonatas have a little something in common with Metallica. People have been making music always, & it's all good.

This. Last concerts I saw were at the Fillmore in Silver Spring. Great medium sized venue, I've only had a good time there. This past stretch I've seen The Dead South. Gritty folk bluegrass ensemble with dark themes. From Sasktchewan. Before that a triple header of ridiculous metal bands Nekrogoblikon, Dragonforce, and the backing band for the Metalocalypse cartoon series Dethklok. Too much fun. Before that I dunno, maybe the funk band Lettuce at 9:30 club. Or Social Distortion/Bad Religion at MGM. Or electroswing Caravan Palace at 9:30 club.

I'm musically promiscuous. I'll see any band that has it's own fanatical crowd. If it is good to them I can usually see what is good to me. If anyone knows of a good show coming up at 9:30, Black Cat, or Fillmore let me know. It'd be fun to hit a show with a fellow idiot Wiz fan.

Anyone seen Hadestown? It's coming down here this year and I was thinking of taking a group of kids from my school to it.
I listened to the music a bit on Youtube.com but how does the whole show work as a story/experience?

Howdy y'all!

I hope all is well!
I have a new song out called, "Lost With You"
It's my most "mainstream" song to date...

I made a very cool video clip for it, the clip itself is a 3:52 minutes reel, which loops and never ends! That was possible since I cut the last part and it sounds prefect.

So here are the links:

I hope you guys like it!

I don't think you can say enough about what a great musician Mark Knopfler is, but if Chet Atkins likes him, you really don't need to say anything at all.

I"m not really known here as a rock fan. All the same, no one can deny this music:

Knopfler is a really great guitarist, no doubt about it. His chops & imagination are over the top.

Here -- for Zards, my jazz buddy -- is my favorite version of "Sultans of Swing." With Eric Clapton on rhythm guitar! :)

I went up to Hagerstown yesterday and managed to get into a sold out show
to see my guy Jerry Douglas. He closed his the show with this cover. It was sublime.

One of my favs is a guy from Lou-easy-Anna, Sonny Landreth.
He did an album circa 2008 called From the Reach on which he wrote
several individual songs that he intended and did play with some
other notable guitarists including Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Eric
Clapton, Robben Ford, Vince Gill (underrated guitarist), Eric Johnson...
Dr John also makes an appearance. It's a pretty amazing album.

I first heard Benny Golson during his short stint w/ the Jazz Messengers beginning in late '58. Would have been either at the Modern Jazz Room in the Chicago Loop or at a place I can't remember its name just north of Division st. I was 16 at the time & an absolute jazz fanatic.

Benny Golson had a great sound on the horn -- somewhat reminiscent of Coltrane (in tonality only) but very individual. He was a terrific composer -- he wrote "I Remember Clifford," the tune in the youtube clip above. It's for a trumpeter of course, given that it's in memory of the great great Clifford Brown who died so tragically & so young. The French player on the cut is pretty ordinary, alas.

Here's a great JM cut from the time I was hearing them in Chicago --

A tremendous player. Lived to the age of 95. Will be missed.
