Not when his stats were better than everyone else's in both leagues - and I'm pretty sure they were. When you know the kid was as physically gifted as anyone in the NBA (and he was when Sac drafted him in the 2nd round after picking Cousins), you're a moron if you don't take a look at him.

Saying the Wizards have Moron for a GM would get me labeled as being negative...

I'll just say I agree with Professor Ruzious, wholeheartedly. When stats in a couple leagues are that many standard deviations better relative to NBA-equivalent players in that league; the decision to take a flyer on a guy SHOULD BE a no brainer.

However, when things are kept close-to-the-vest, conservative, closed-to-new approaches, and very biased toward expending draft picks and other resources to acquire SOLELY veterans of other NBA teams at a price; you miss on Whiteside.

Ruzious and guys like him see what EG and his staff seem blind to.

As one who is in recovery from a diagnosis and who is in training to provide mental health services; I say the Mavericks and Marc Cuban acquired Javale for good reason.

His leg injury has hampered him but he's been extremely productive for that well-run organization.

(In 32 games, PER 20.8, WS/48 0.154, and per-36 of 17.3 points/13.2 rebounds/2.6 blocks).

The organization that accommodates recovery and resiliency instead of embracing stupid jokes or locking onto old mistakes will WIN with guys like McGee.

Javale has killed it w/ the Mavs -- no doubt about it. But, its 350 minutes in 11 minutes a game, playing against who knows what part of an opponent's roster and in who knows what game circumstances.

He's a great athlete of course, and maybe he's ready to have a couple good years? Maybe by now he *is* on ADHD meds, or it's just that time has been his friend. It happens.

I imagine he'll be available at veteran minimum next year, and I can see someone grabbing him for that, even the Wizards. Especially given that we have nothing -- nada, zero, zip -- past Gortat at Center next year.

Then again, if we're picking guys on productivity in short minutes, check out the Spurs' Boban Marjanovic. He's 27, has killed it everywhere he's played, and is a UFA at season's end. Or Willie Reed, whom some of us liked in Summer League. In fact, the Mavs Salah Mejri has been as good as Javale. Cole Aldrich has been very good as well. Why we didn't pick up Withey when we could have I'll never know.

Just to be clear: ADHD or another psychological diagnosis doesn't necessarily concern me. What has me concerned about McGee in particular is his choice to decline treatment. By "treatment" I'm not talking strictly about medication. There are non-medication approaches to managing life with ADHD, which McGee also did not pursue while with the Wizards or Nuggets. The guys obviously has great potential. If he's willing to take steps to manage his ADHD, I'd have him on my team.

A lot of times ADHD meds are a gateway to cocaine abuse or other drug abuse. Declining TRADITIONAL WESTERN MEDICINE doesn't make me infer declining treatment.

FWIW, I've spoken to people recently who covered the Wiz and said that unlike Blatche -- who was a lazy knucklehead, but a nice person -- McGee was a complete dick when he was here. Treated people -- arena workers, media, etc -- really poorly.

You got people who think well of themselves because of the good things they do. That's not a virtue, I don't think.

Then you got people who think well of themselves, despite that they do a lot of bad things. Blindness.

Then you got people who think well of themselves *because* they do a lot of bad things. I don't think we need any of those, do we?

Then again, maybe Javale has changed. Maybe he's respectful, treats people well, has had some humility pounded into him by experience. Maybe. But... maybe not.

One problem with hoping for that to be the case (mostly for his sake - he's got a long life ahead of him in which he won't be playing basketball) is that in the NBA even if you're a knucklehead, alienate everyone around you, don't get a next contract like your last contract, etc., you still have many many millions of $$, and you're still -- even someone like JaVale -- pulling in more than a million dollars to play a game. Doesn't seem likely to promote personal growth....

If we're bringing back knuckleheads I'd rather bring back Jordan Crawford. Maybe being forced to play abroad has matured him.

Speaking of knuckleheads, Michael Beasley's been de phenom for Houston playing 15 minutes a game with a PER of 27.8 and shooting about 52% from the field. Have I mentioned that Houston has a good GM? Btw, how smart was Morey to include a team option for next season in Beasley's contract?

Brad Beal question:

Would you guys consider a Clarkson/Randle for Beal type of S&T in the off-season? How do you guys feel about Beal?

When Beal and Porter play the way they did last night, it makes it really hard to trade them even if they're overpaid (as in the case w/Beal soon) or if it's for a guy like Cousins. You're essentially trading one of them w/Gortat, plus picks. The inconsistency is infuriating though. If we strike out w/KD, what to do? I'd rather have Morris and Gortat than Horford who might make more than both of them combined.

I would NOT make that Beal for Clarkson/Randle trade. I'd like Clarkson as a 3rd guard; not as a starter. And Randle's an offensive-minded player who's very inefficient on offense and very limited on defense - though he is a good rebounder. I'd rather try to work a trade with Boston involving Avery Bradley and either Olynyk or one of their picks.

I still think letting Beal walk might be the best option. But I fear EG will either overpay to resign him or make a bad trade just to say he got something in return.

I tend to agree with this, although Clarkson as a third guard would be interesting. I think I'd be more interested in Lou+Nance+pick than Randle+Clarkson.

Man, it would be tough to let Beal walk for nothing. At a minimum, I'd wait it out until he signed the QO to get one more year out of him at what would still be a bargain given the new cap.

And speaking of the new cap, with most teams having some level of room, a Beal S&T wouldn't necessarily have to include a bunch of bad contracts to make the numbers work. We could take back players that make less than a maxed out Beal but are still good value for us (like Ruz's Bradley+Olynyk idea).

Your faith in EG >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> mine. The thought of EG trying to work out a trade with Ainge brings on a bad case of projectile vomiting.

Beal isn't going to sign for the QO. He would be losing too much money next season. He will surely get an offer from someone.

Actually, the trade is impossible in any case, as Clarkson is a UFA at the end of the season. Randle is, in effect, a rookie; I haven't watched the Lakers much, but you are certainly right that he's inefficient.

I think I responded as I did, because I'm worried that the two options are to max him or let him walk. Neither is terribly attractive....

You're right that letting Bradley Beal go w/ nothing coming back would be awful. And, he keeps giving hints of a very high upside, doesn't he?

I'd hate to max him, though. Do you have any sense of prediction about this? Do you think it's likely we'll max him?

If Beal was drafted 20th nobody would be talking about paying him $20+ million/yr.
