Ainge turned a player who was out for the season -- Leandro Barbosa -- and another with limited usefulness -- Jason Collins -- into a high-volume scorer with two functioning ACLs. In a small way this is a coup:

Yeah, we couldn't trade Steez for Maynor?

How is this a good trade in Ernie eyes? We gain nothing that's the point of trade is to get better not give the other team something and get nothing back. Ernie is the worst gm in the nba by far.

Actually, it's the New Orleans pick. Which really sucks because by then, they'll be a playoff team
You're right. I continue to get New Orleans and Charlotte mixed up for some reason.

Hey, if Crawford ends up helping the Celtics, maybe we can call in a favor from Ainge in the offseason.

Today we traded Jordan Crawford to the Celtics for Leandro Barbosa and Jason Collins. We wish Jordan only the very best and we hate to see him go. But in this league, in order to acquire skilled veteran talent, you have to also part with some talent too.
Leandro and Jason play the game the right way. They will be stabilizing influences in the locker room. And they're pieces that will mix well with our young talent to help us improve in our future. Welcome Leandro and Jason to the team.
Now that is some sweet action right there.

Not surprising to get nothing for him after putting him in the doghouse for weeks. A smart well run team trades him after last season when his value was high(er).

That's some solid turd polishing you did there. Impressive.

Cheap sons of bitches.

According to a league source, the Celtics offered Fab Melo, a 7-foot rookie from Brazil who appeared in just four games this season. The Wizards, though, had no interest in taking back salary beyond this season, especially for a big man who remains a project. They opted for the financial savings instead.

Actually his value was at it's highest earlier this season before he suddenly got benched. This was his best season by a substantial margin.

I'm totally apoplectic about this. I don't think Crawford was great, but at least Melo was (theoretically) a (possibly) functional player. Barbosa is out for the season, and Collins flat sucks. Neither will likely ever play for the franchise. Why not just waive the damn guy?!

Nah, I can see why they declined.
Melo was a first round pick. That means his contract is guaranteed for next year and there are team options for his 3rd and 4th seasons. (And you have to decide on those team options a full year before they're actually exercised.) Basically, the Wizards would have ended up keeping Melo on the payroll for 2 more years after this one at least, and there's no reason to believe that he'll ever be good enough to play in the NBA. We're better off saving that money and using it on vet minimum free agents. I'd much rather take that money and spend it on, say, Brandon Wright.

So they trade for Okariza effectively killing their capspace for 2 years then they basically cut a guy on his rookie contract having his best season.

We had already picked up next year's team option on Crawford's contract. If we waived him, we'd still have to pay him. Basically, what we just did in the trade was waive him.
My issue is that there are no cap advantages in waiving him. Either way, we'd have enough cap room to sign our draft picks and a full MLE free agent without hitting the luxtax. If we couldn't get a 2nd rounder in a Crawford trade, there was no downside to keeping him and shopping him in the summer.
