All season long, the backup spot at point guard behind All-Star John Wall has been a sinkhole. The two-year, $4.1 million deal they gave Maynor last summer immediately proved a disaster; he made 27.7 percent of his 2-point attempts in 200-plus minutes before losing his job to Garrett Temple. A superior defender who has at least cracked the Mendoza line inside the arc (34.0 percent), Temple still wasn't the answer at the position.

Per NBA.com/Stats, Washington has been outscored by 11.7 points per 100 possessions with Wall on the bench, effectively turning into the Philadelphia 76ers for 12 minutes each game. Just cutting that deficit in half would likely translate into an extra win the remainder of the season, which could be critical for a team in a crowded battle for playoff positioning in the East. Miller can help the Wizards do that.

Nearing age 38, Miller has slowed down a bit. His 45.2 percent 2-point shooting would be his worst mark since the lost 2002-03 campaign he spent with the L.A. Clippers. Still, the Nuggets were outscoring teams by 3.0 points per 100 possessions with Miller on the floor before he was exiled. And it's worlds better than Maynor and Temple.

The Wizards didn't give up much to upgrade the position. Despite moments of competence this season, Vesely remained on the fringes of Randy Wittman's rotation after the team turned down his fourth-year contract option. The 2015 second-round pick Washington dealt to Philadelphia, originally from New Orleans (according to Mike Prada of Bullets Forever), might be the biggest cost. The Wizards also opened up a roster spot and shaved a small amount off their payroll the rest of this season, since Miller makes less than Maynor and Vesely combined.

One issue worth watching is whether Miller's arrival might change how Washington plays this summer. Though they didn't necessarily add any salary (the $2 million guaranteed portion of Miller's 2014-15 contract is actually less than Maynor's salary), if Miller plays well the Wizards may just opt to keep him at a price of $4.6 million. Washington can go under the cap, but doesn't have to do so, and could stay over and use Bird Rights to re-sign free agents Trevor Ariza and Marcin Gortat.

I wonder who we would have gone-after had we not had to unload Maynor?

I get where you're going but Wittmans 8-9 man rotation won't get you anywhere in playoffs.

It's impossible for any team to win a series with a rotation like that.

You could be right... I kind of see the east like this - Looking at next year - and who knows what will happen but... Indiana looks to stay on top, Miami looks to bring the crew back. Chicago, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, 2 firsts and a second, Amnesty Boozer = 47M. Atlanta gets Horford back, has cap space and a first. Charlotte, cap space, two firsts and a second. Cleveland has lots of caps space, first and two seconds, Boston has Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens and two firsts and $44M in cap space, Orlando has two firsts, lots of cap space and young players, Philadelphia has two firsts, two seconds Thaddeus Young, MCW and Nerlens Noel and tons of cap space, Milwaukee has a first and two seconds, 48M in cap space Antetokounmpo, John Henson, Larry Sanders...

Detroit has Joe Dumars so they are probably hosed like us, Brooklyn and New York. Although Brooklyn will probably return to the playoffs.

Not sure why I don't have any faith in EG - I just don't.

Go wiz...

Actually, teams usually rely on 8-9 man rotations in the playoffs.

Nobody with the Wizards is concerned about doing well in the playoffs. The goal that's been set is MAKE the playoffs. Miller will help them do that.

Finally, Temple has been awful this season. He's not a guy who will make a difference in whether or not the Wizards win or lose a playoff series.

Why are many of you complaining about picks? It is not like Ernie knows how to use them. If he did keep the picks, you should be on stand buy to be Grunfelded  when we are on the clock.

Good Afternoon Wizards Insider,

After finishing up an exciting All-Star weekend with John Wall winning the slam dunk contest and Bradley Beal finishing as the runner-up in the three-point contest, the Wizards picked up an impressive victory last night in their first win in Atlanta since 2008! We are now officially on sale with season ticket memberships for the 2014-15 season! I wanted to reach out to my clients with the opportunity to get the best available seats in the arena for next season, and to guarantee your seats for the 2014 NBA Playoffs! We are all very excited about what the 2013-14 season has had to offer so far, and there’s more reasons now than ever to become a season ticket member for the 2014-15 season!
