Re: Political Roundtable Part XXVIII
the article by the store clerk is particularly galling in just how
angry some people are about being asked (actually told) to do something as
trivial as putting a mask on long enough to go into and out of
a store. It's quite stunning in how it illuminates how determined
people are to behave in anti-social ways if it supposedly affirms
their political affiliation. Only with an imbecile like tRump as
POTUS would this happen.

"Then the local sheriff went on Facebook and said he wasn’t going to enforce the state requirement because he didn’t want to be the “mask police.”"
If the sheriff doesn't want to enforce mask restrictions, whatever, but if you own a store you are entitled to kick customers out for any reason, and the sheriff has to enforce trespassing.
I like the solution at the end. Lock the door and only let people in if they have a mask.

I hope I am not responding as some on social media appear to as if things like this
are somehow funny. It's sad and quite possibly, completely avoidable. 37 years old.
That said, as a parent, some of the training we took to heart concerning discipline
was to use logical consequences. Still tragic.

U.S. Army veteran Richard Rose survived two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan during his nine years in the military. The 37-year-old was tragically felled by coronavirus on the Fourth of July.
Rose, who refused to wear a mask because he thought the virus was over-hyped, died just three days after being diagnosed with COVID-19 on July 1, reported WOIO-TV.

Of course here in VA we have local jurisdictions that have publicly announced
they won't enforce the new gun safety laws either.

DC police have basically said they will not bother pursuing bicycle theft. Must be nice to get to pick and choose which parts of your job you're going to do.

^while i'm against that and the sheriff who's not going to play mask police on an ideological level, i'm ok with it on a practical level so long as they're cool w being defunded accordingly.

Look at Biden's favorables in the Fox Poll. He's in positive territory. Hillary was NEVER in positive territory on likability. She was even on par with Trump on how much she was disliked.
Also..
NEW ABC NEWS/WASHINGTON POST POLL has Trump down 54% to 44% against Biden amongst LIKELY VOTERS. The LIKELY VOTERS screening helps Trump vs. REGISTERED VOTERS. And GUESS WHAT?! HE'S STILL GETTING WASHED. WORSE THAN 2016.

It's wild how inured we are to how much money is wasted in this country. $1B on a laughably stupid political campaign

Nevermind the untold billions invested in Fox News and its satellite propaganda outlets. Arguably the $1 billion spent on the actual campaign is the least important money spent

Re: Political Roundtable Part XXVIII
story of trump's life here.
step 1: taking advantage of a stoked (political/economic) environment that's primed for exploitation.
step 2: achieve unexpected success by pure happenstance and factors largely out of his control
step 3: unaware of the context of the success, attributes to his own genius but unable to articulate the nature of that genius
step 4: high off this success, charges forward, armed with his genius, and flies by the seat of his pants
step 5: much like running down a hotel hallway blindfolded, while charging forward, continuously runs into obstruction after obstruction, injuring himself along the way. blind to the bruises, he shouts down at detractors, citing to the progress made, even when much (all) of the forward progress is a direct result of inertia and momentum
step 6: little failures give way to larger, more consequential failures
step 7: double down
step 8: spiraling out of control
step 9: triple down
step 10: total failure.
you can map this onto any number of Trump ventures, starting with his initial real estate success, his other various money-making endeavors, or his presidency. his ineptitude always shines through and dooms these endeavors on a substantive level. there's value in him being teflon don and escaping obvious, objective failures while still being viewed (by the dumb) as successful.
i believe that with respect to the campaign and spending, we are at step 7/8. Come October, we'll be at 9. there will be an inordinate amount of crazy talk as he flails, looking for any angle, any foothold. hell, he just came out in favor of masks yesterday. he'll do or say anything to try to win, and it'll lead to a bunch of erratic behavior.

Re: Political Roundtable Part XXVIII
so one of my few friends who is a trump voter although he's not like a
serious MAGA hat wearing booster, just a rich-ish actuary originally from
upstate NY has a daughter about to start college and he's really frustrated
after Cuomo put VA on the list of states which people traveling from have
to quarantine when they come to NY to take her to school. His younger daughter
is about to start her freshman year at a school up somewhere N of Syracuse.
So he needs to get (her and others?) tested before she even shows up.
I didn't get into it with him and while I can understand his frustration,
it's a serious indictment of leadership that testing hasn't become something
that is routine and easy at this point six months into the pandemic.
He admits that Trump has handled this thing poorly but also clings
to a philosophy of minimizing how bad it is. I'm not sure how much
worse it would have to be before he admits that tRump is almost
uniquely unsuited, at least as far as presidents go, to be the guy
in charge at this time. He's also in denial about the whole racial
equity thing from what I can tell (I don't think he would admit
the president is a racist). Obviously, we have very different political
beliefs and generally avoid the topic in conversation.

We are at '9) triple down' already. At the point where you are sending unmarked Federal troops (border patrol SWAT teams) to snatch citizens who are exercising their constitutional right to free speech and assembly, you are some distance past those same troops imprisoning foreign families to pander to xenophobes.

Especially given that the nations who have turned this thing around have done so by regular mass testing and vigorous contact tracing. But of course Trump is threatening to veto the GOP approved proposal on COVID precisely over those provisions in the bill.

Looks like Trump is deliberately trying to normalize shooting Democrats. Talking about surges in Democrat cities like they're Taliban strongholds.
Will Trump supporters support him more or less after his gestapo open fire in Chicago and massacre several hundred innocent protesters?

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.
