Donald Sloan, Greivis Vasquez, Shane Larkin, Aaron Brooks , Jarrett Jack, Tim Frazier, Langston Galloway, Isaiah Canaan, Mario Chalmers, Raymond Felton, Ty Lawson, Steve Blake, seem to be our options right now for the last poing guard spot.
Personally I would want them in this order.
A: Sloan/Larkin/Frazier
B: Jack/Vasquez/Brooks
C: Galloway/Cannaan/ Chalmers
D: Felton/Lawson/Blake

I don't understand the desire to deal Gortat - he's empirically a better player than Mahinmi, on a better contract. He's arguably been the 2nd most productive player on the team behind Wall - why would we give up a high value asset on a good contract just because we overpaid Mahinmi?

As for Jason Smith, I enjoyed going to Knicks games and listening to fans excoriate him when he played. Slow footed and not terribly aware on defense, enjoyed his own shot a bit more than you'd want. Good times. I am not even remotely excited about /any/ acquisitions for the team this year. I wonder what it's like to be excited about players being added to your team - I mean, think about being a Portland or Boston fan, they seem to be making interesting acquisitions all the time, for good or for ill.

Ahh, Jason Smith is not going to play much unless there are injuries or a Gortat deal. Mahinmi was considered one of the best defensive centers in the NBA last season in his first year as a starter. Not exciting but kind of important to get better defensively esp. considering the fact that Gortat wasn't great last season.

Tim Fraizer looks like he might be worth a look. He also probably commands more than vet min money. He wouldn't be a bad use of the room exception. Ty Lawson might be worth a flyer on a team-friendly deal.

Some of that list look pretty washed up. It might be better to hunt summer league/D-league than sign some of them.

At this point, I am completely puzzled. I just cannot imagine the reasoning or strategy behind Ernie's off season. Mahinmi is a good player, but we paid too much for a backup to a better, cheaper Center. Yet, signing Mahinmi has been our best move by far!

Why would he trade anything at all for a 3d string PG being thrown away by a mediocre team like Utah? It's just incomprehensible.

Why would he sign two players from the end of the bench of an Orlando team that won 35 games last year? Leave aside for a moment the hopes any of us might have that Nicholson improves, surely no one thinks he is the best player that was available. And Smith is and has always been execrable, yet we signed him for three years!

We brought Satoransky over -- no one knows whether he'll be good or how good, but at least that move makes sense.

None of the rest of it does. Looks like we'll be lucky to win 35 games next year.

We have until 7/15 to trade or waive Gooden and Eddie. Maybe someone will need to clear cap room by acquiring then waiving Gooden. But it seems unlikely. I imagine we'll let him go. Keeping 27 year old Jarell Eddie would be idiotic -- which means it's right up Ernie's alley.

Sloan had a decent year last year and Larkin is young.
jack, vasquezan brook would be typical EG vet's weve loved for a long time signing but have a history of at least being solid players. The C list guys are jsut last resorts and the D list guys are bottom of the barrel.

This is the kind of offseason that can take a diehard fan and make him/her never return.

I hope Ted gets destroyed financially from this. He won't, though.

the only way we are going to get a star here is to draft one. Drafting is not Ernie's strenghts. Neither is trading or free agency. Looks like we screwed for a long time with a team that will finish between 34-43 wins a year which is exactly what Ernie is good at

Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Would much rather have had Nene at 3mil then Mahinmi at 15 mil.Even with these inflated contracts thats a bad deal. I don't see where Mahinmi got this reputation for good defense. The stats certainly don't show it with a career high of 1.1 blocks per game and only 25mpg as a starter.

Never even heard of Jason Smith. I think I'd rather have Joe Smith.

:banghead:

Nene is the ideal backup center. He's still pretty darn good in limited minutes when healthy, perhaps better than half of the starting centers in the league. His big issue is that he can't handle a heavy minute load, which isn't a problem if he's a backup. We are paying 6 times as much for Mahinmi, who, in 15 minutes per game, won't be any better than Nene.

These are the kinds of deals EG could have signed if he just waited for the dust to settle. Oh, and Brandon Rush just got 1-year $3.5M.

Ernie likes to get his work done early so he can go back to whatever is more important to him.

Anyone else remember 4 years ago, the optimism surrounding this team?
