If we do indeed decide to give up that pick, it will be a trade designed to save salary and avoid the luxtax. That will be a higher priority than a win-now short term improvement. I guarantee it.
I'm really hoping we just stand pat. Or maybe trade Jason Smith plus cash for a smaller contract (or for nothing at all).
A trade of Jason Smith and a 1st for Evans (works on the Trade Checker) would save close to $2 mil in salaries this season - though that would be pro-rated, and since the lux tax is computed by using end of year salaries, it would help reduce the lux tax. Also, it would take off his $5,450,000 off the books next season and take off whatever salary the 1st rounder costs. I'm not suggesting the Wiz should do that trade, but I'm still thinking there's a good chance the Wiz trade their 1st rounder.
Yes, that trade could work.
But if I'm Memphis, I'd look for a deal that nets either a higher pick or a filler contract that doesn't suck as much as Smith's. And from Ted's perspective, I think he'd look to trade Smith for more cap relief and no returning talent, rather than a mere $2M in cap relief plus a short term upgrade in talent. He'd prefer to trade Smith plus the pick to Dallas for a top 55 protected 2nd round pick, for example.
There's no benefit in taking the R1 pick's salary off next year's books -- the opposite; we'll need players, & a rookie-scale salary helps. All the more so the following year.
They do want to get under the cap, of course, but the news I'm reading is all about the Wizards "reluctance" to trade our R1 pick. Again, if you're doing financial calculations -- & remembering that we only have 11 guys for next year (assuming Smith/Meeks pick up their options & that we retain Mac) -- you have to figure in the salary benefits over several years of that R1 pick! It may be worth it, overall, to pay a little tax this year or next.
As to Tyreke -- I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him on the Cleveland roster. Obviously, they are all in for this season. & if things go well, it'd be a great stage for Tyreke to display his abilities. Makes sense to me.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think they'll trade the pick for tax relief. I certainly wouldn't do so. I'm just saying that the odds that they trade the pick for cap relief are higher than the odds of them trading the pick for win-now talent.

Wondering if you guys have interest in DeAndre Jordan and what would be a suitable package?

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXV
BTW, I put this trade on the trade board and appears the Mavs fans would approve:
Smith, McCullough, 2018 2nd (50), 2019 1st, and 5.1M Cash for Mavs 2nd (34) this year?
We use our 2019 1st to get under the tax and end up with picks 20 and 34.

I would do that trade, is it "legal" under CBA? Then I'd fire Ernie.

Not that paying Ian as much as we do is good... but monroe is kinda useless in the modern NBA... but damnit if Brad Stevens can make him into a good defender than that guy really is a miracle worker.

The Wizards better be interested, for **** sake. I don't know how many more layups Mahinmi can brick in a season, but it must be an NBA record.

I completely changed my mind on getting Tyreke after watching Tomas' second game starting.
I absolutely agree with this. 100% CCJ.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

I like Randle, Clarkson is good... but his contract...
I can't envision any sort of trade involving our 1st with those two coming back that really helps us a to a great degree now, or in coming seasons.

Lakers are surely eyeing Lebron & Paul George and won't want to absorb an albatross like Mahinmi which is the only way I could see a trade with them being good for us. They already have Deng's old ass on an even bigger contract than Mahinmi.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XXXV
The Monroe buyout is interesting. If we could free up enough salary to be able to fit Monroe and Scott under our exceptions, it'd be HUGE for our bench.
Might be able to accomplish this by moving Gortat/Smith/Meeks to the Lakers for Lopez--the idea being they can't attract two max players at the moment anyway, and will need to have guys on a one year deal next year to try for another star the following summer.
For example:
Lopez out for Meeks, Gortat, Smith, and our second this year.
The only reason to say no would be if they truly think they can bring in two max level guys this summer--which I think is super unrealistic at this point with Cousins banged up and George fitting in extremely well with OKC. Plus OKC has his bird rights = more money.
We'd be at 102 million after that. 8.4 MLE to Monroe, BAE of 3.2 to Scott would put us at 113.6 and under the tax.
Draft a center with our first this year.
If Kelly gets a contract of say, 15 million the season after next, and Sato gets say, 5 million, total salary in the final season of Ians contract would be 141 or so. Depending on the length of the deals, in 2020-21 season you could have a team salary of 134 for:
Wall: 40.8
Beal: 28.7
Otto: 28.5
Monroe: 8.3 (expiring)
Scott: 3.3 (more than likely won't even be on the team at this point due to BAE limitations, possible increasing cost, etc)
Sato: 5
Oubre: 15
1st round 18 pick: 2.2
1st round 19 pick: 1.9
The Lux tax projection for 19-20 I'd say around 126?
That's really not bad. PIF, nate, other capologists, do you see any issues with the numbers/logic? Biggest thing might be me underselling Oubre's value, but I kind of see 18 a year as his ceiling at the moment.

I'm assuming Monroe's going to the best fit - not the biggest paycheck - since he's already gotten paid. Gotta figure Cleveland would be the favorites. San Ant might be an especially good fit because of his passing ability.

NOP is CLEARLY the favorites. His is from Louisiana, gets to start immediately next to a super-star, gets to make playoff run.
We would be a close 2nd, but only if we had a trade lined up for Gortat that we told him about.
I see no reason why he would go to SAS or Boston as both teams have Very good Centers and backups.
He is not 33 on a ring chase. He is 27 and trying to get a contract this summer. He needs playing time
Also, why do people reference money he could make from Boston with their injury exception? Any money he gets is only offset by the money the Suns paid him.... so he cant make any more money, correct?

I'm not sure if double-dipping is permitted in these situations. I know it was allowed when they used to have the amnesty rules.
Players don't always want to go home. For example, he went to GTown for college. And it's not like NO is a great team that's even assured a spot in the playoffs.
