I appreciate your posts & cntousmart...'s posts as well. But I guarantee, 100%, that neither of you has had as many fist fights as I have had. & never will.

I grew up in a tough neighborhood of Chicago -- Uptown. Fights were common, & in my case I was also on the receiving end of some anti-Semitism I didn't like. Led to fights.

I found out early that nearly everyone will just bull rush you. Very very few will ball their fist & throw a hard punch at someone's face. I was one of those few. & the guy that's bull rushing you is walking straight into it.

My last fist fight occurred when I was about a month from turning 48. But, I'm sure no one wants to hear the story, right?

Me too and I would love to hear your story! I grew up in SE DC by Potomac Gardens in the mid-to-late 80s. learned early on to a punch straight to the jaw will make dudes think twice about warring with you even if your 98 lbs lol. My last fight was only a few years ago at 44. I said to myself I gotta stop doing this ... ready to fight 1 on 10 like I'm superman

But it was 2nd nature. I was the tall, incredibly skinny kid with curly hair who stood out like a sore thumb and an easy target for bullies, except I never backed down, no matter how big the bully.

It became a burden in my career when I had that same attitude and wouldn't back down against bad managers at work. It held me back from promotions in a lot situations despite always becoming a rock star at whatever I did.

Only now as I approach the big 5-0 where I've mellowed out and see the long term picture instead aggressively responding to every battle I've faced and experienced some success because of it.

one of my scrap stories - i was walking home once and a bunch of guys on their stoop made a passing comment that contained one or two slurs, just normal jerkoff behavior. for whatever reason (drunk as hell) i engaged and started telling off each of them. i got my ass kicked, including a particularly bad headbut to my orbital socket that resulted in a gross black eye. this was 2 days before halloween, and instead of taking it easy, i just got some face paint to cover the other eye, and went out as a panda.

I live in a group home. From time to time, we get unsavory characters. Some are users. One guy has been driving the roughly fifteen other residents crazy. We have a Filipino widow house manager. She takes care of all of us, works 7 days a week, cooks breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

This one idiot started off acting like he wanted to get violent with her.

I am the peacemaker of the house.

I'll spare you the details other than to say he earned getting body slammed the other night.

Another time he was forewarned before he got bitch slapped. He won't touch uninvited again. Told him over and over to stop.

The last time I punched a guy was only 4 or 5 months ago. This other weird mfer was standing over my bed as I woke up. He stood over me from less than 2 feet, peering like a zombie. I warned him that I was going to punch him in the face if he didn't get away from me. He didn't. From my bed, I hit him directly on his nose. It was more of a piston-like thrust than a punch, quite defensive. I wasn't trying to hurt him.

Well, I caused him to bleed quite a bit. I thought his nose was broken. Thankfully, the only thing broken was his weirdness. That dude eventually got put out of the house.

Scrapping keeps you feeling young. I'm in here with old farts, sickos, and a few psychos. There are other borders that are highly functional. Thank God.

PS - The big 5-0 is young! Yesterday, I called my fraternity brother, and it was his 59th birthday. I called him young, too. I told him, "You're not in Club 6s, yet."

That story reminds me of how I was trained to wake up inmates at a medium security corrections facility. I was doing my senior field work experience to get my degree.

I remember being told specifically how to wake an inmate up without being severely injured. We had to stay at least 5 feet away from the foot of the bed and between the bunks. Then softly whisper the inmates name and identify myself and why I was there. All while standing very still, arms at my side, hands open & palm forward.

I only had to do it once but I remembered the look on the guards face when he let me into the dorm cell. He didn’t say anything but his look said, “You dumb f__ck!”
