I'm a huge Raconteurs and Stripes fan, but I've never gotten into The Black Keys yet. I've heard of them, but I haven't delved into their sound as of this moment. I'm liking those songs A LOT. I'll have to check them out. Thanks barely!

Yep no problem, Dallas. Always glad to spread word of good artists. Hey, speaking of "influential" artists of this decade (as you said about Grizzly Bear), this'll probably give you a chuckle...

EXPERIMENTAL PUNK/Noise Music/Noisecore

I don't want to fully explore this category, yet (because much of the experimental music is a cerebral journey, but simply noise). However, you know what band I keep hearing will be looked back upon as perhaps the most influential of the decade? I just heard this again last night from another friend (who writes for music mags). And I'm dumbstruck whenever I hear it. Hundred bucks says you don't even know the band. Four hundred says even if you were well-versed in their music, that you wouldn't deem them with such an accolade.

But, I've heard literally tens of people (influential and/or knowledgeable people in the music industry) laud this band. The idea is laughable at first listen. After the fifth listen, you kinda start to see their point... kinda... maybe... When I think of "influential" music in the last decade I think of names like: Animal Collective, Aesop Rock, Ben Gibbard, Jack White, Fleet Foxes, Mos Def, DJ Shadow, Minus the Bear, Maps & Atlases, Don Cab, Flying Lotus and a bunch of electronica -- not the masterpiece that is "Come See the Duck." Although, I gotta admit it'll get stuck in your head, whether you want it there or not. And eventually, the kitsch value of it starts growing on ya.

Deerhoof - Come See The Duck (shortened version, but I like this video best.)

I haven't been following this thread closely, so forgive me if these have already been posted:

Mayer Hawthorne: underground hip hop DJ turned doo wop crooner.

"Just Can't Work It Out"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBKx8PyE5qQ

"When I Said Goodbye"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBbX9Hy3vDc

"I Wish It Would Rain"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfpJmbF1NSc

Vinx: Former world class triple jumper who got screwed by the boycott of the '80 Olympics turned R&B/funk/reggae/world/afrobeat/? singer/percussionist. Often performs solo, with just a djembe drum as accompaniment. Discovered by Sting.

"It's Too Late" (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uascyW5dviA

"I Give My All To You" (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_bXkp3_xos

HeeSun Lee: Female Korean-born Christian independent hip hop artist. A bit of a personal plug, since my production company produced her debut album.

"A Part Of Me"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWSyyY0Az1o

Colin Munroe: Blue-eyed soul meets J Dilla-esque hip hop meets alt-pop. He uses this interesting pitch shifting technique that is bound to render Autotune obsolete, if it ever catches on. His free mixtape, "Colin Munroe Is The Unsung Hero," is floating around the net. Google it.

"Piano Lessons" (feat. Joell Ortiz)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ4f5jmsx_Q

"Flashing Lights" (remake/remix of Kanye West song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40G8sbl6o9c

"Will I Stay"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHSuelFb3p8
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Nice selections, key. And no they weren't posted before. We haven't really talked about R & B, yet. Rap and hip hop we've done. And I knew of, and love, "Piano Lessons." I'm a big Ortiz fan. The rest are new to me. TY for posting.

Ever since someone made the Dan Fegan/Don Fegan joke about Ricky Rubios agent, I've had the Steely Dan song "Hey 19" in my head. Nice song, but I have no antidote for it. Must purge song loop...

REAL GUITAR HEROES

Hey, I remember people mentioning Buckethead. And I was just flipping through a G3 show as I practice. I assume ya'll know G3. It's where all the greatest rock guitarists team-up. It was created by Satriani and has featured the likes of Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, etc. The problem in finding good video of it is that while they're the best guitarists, they are also worse than karaoke singers... literally. Final video isn't G3, but it's Vai...

My instrument, so I might go post crazy. But, trust they'll all be amazin'. Besides the usual suspects (Wes Montgomery, Hendrix, Berry, Allman, Tarrega, Stanley Jordan, Eddie Hazel, Buddy Guy, BB King, Satriani, Vai, Sabicas, Segovia, Robert Johnson, Beck, Morse, Page, Gilmour, Jack White, Angus, Dimebag, Clapton, Hammett, Santana, Randy Rhodes, Van Halen, Frusciante, Morrello, etc.) here's some clips of great guitar work. OK, I'll probably toss in a few usual suspects too (just because the clips are cool):

Andy McKee

Edgar Cruz

Adrian Legg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd4uVwxsSHk

Andrew Winton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKnngyCIctA

Stevie Ray Vaughan (As Nigel Tufnel would say, "I heard him and I just gave up trying to play guitar. I just turned it into a coffee table." This clip makes guitarists either cry, cheer or throw somethin'. It's church in here as I watch this video, with me constantly blurting out, 'Jesus.')

The SRV clip reminds me of one of the better lesser known guitarists I've heard/seen in Danny Gatton:

Seemed like such a bad luck cat, never got quite as much success as he did critical acclaim.

Gatton was a beast, and a DC dude, too. Another now-deceased DC-area guitar God worth checking out is Roy Buchanon, a dude who eschewed international fame and fortune (rumor was he turned down an offer to play with the Rolling Stones) so that he could create music on his own terms. read: drunk. Sadly, he ended up hanging himself in a Fairfax county jail cell. He had a much more laid back style than Gatton, but perfect tone and chops galore. check it:

Not a huge Yngwie fan, his personality is just too repulsive so I can never appreciate his music.

But Jason Becker... man what a great artist to listen too. Seriously what could have been situation with him. The things he put out before his illness are simply out of this world. His work with Cacophony and Marty Friedman is amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qCQLyb0-mI

Just an amazing guitarist.

My favorite right now is Jeff Loomis. He plays for a Seattle based heavy metal band called Nevermore. He put out a solo album a while back.

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Peter Green.

BTW BA, that ain't Django (long dead), though it is his song. (Great clip though). Django had those burned fingers on his left hand (jealous girl tried to burn his wagon down with him in it). Makes his skills that much more startling.

I did get to see his partner jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli who was playing well into his 80's. Had no idea who it was at the time, just happened to duck into a little jazz club in NYC with this girl I was what they used to call 'keen' on. Old man could really play the fiddle.

I told you I have too many clips. Grabbed the wrong one. I meant to post:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoIJ4W7kXiQ&feature=fvw

And I have six more and two books of his sheet music. But, ty for the catch, Doc. I know he's dead lol. Les Paul used to rave over him. That's how I found him. Speaking of:

Les Paul
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb5_DEhm ... re=related

BTW, I agree on Malmsteen. However, the only reason why I give him credit is for bringing classical to American metal. And for many a year he was the fastest guitarist on the planet. But, he lacks emotion. Which IMO is actually a plus for much of the classical he plays. And TY for the tip on Loomis. Lovin' that.

Anybody got any suggestions on contemporary artists who sing classic big band songs. I've got stuff from Michael Buble, Jane Monheit, Matt Dusk, Natalie Cole, Robin McKelle, and Connick Jr. (I tried Diana Krall but I don't like her cuz she doesn't sing as much as she just sort of yawns the lyrics.) Any other suggestions?

For those who enjoy some nice old school metal, here is a band called Black Tide. A new band and the kids in the band when their first album was recorded were all 15 or 16.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0E6nsE6_e4

Pretty cool to see a modern day band staying true to the roots of actual power and thrash metal.

Rico, I love Seal's new album. But, besides that I think you covered everyone. Unless you count like... Josh Groban. Modern big band isn't my thing at all. I only like Seal's album because it's a throwback. In terms of old big band, I have a bunch of recommends. Starting with my Dad's favorite Cab Calloway.

And that Black Tide clip was great.

I'll tell you one thing I know, the phrase "The singer is a crook" is more brilliant than friggin' "Come see the duck" -- because one plays with both lyric and sound, while the other is kitsch nonsense.)
