No. To watch Wizards games you have to sign up with Monumental for $$.

So Comcast and Verizon don't carry Monumental anymore?
If true that's insane. No one is going to sign up for his app.

Re: The Amazingly Suck Theodore Leonsis Thread
To keep watching local games, fans can subscribe to Monumental+ through its website or app stores, or access the channel via pay-TV providers such as DirecTV Stream, Verizon, Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox and Antietam Broadband. These options still provide coverage of Capitals, Wizards and Mystics games but often mean adding yet another subscription or switching services — a growing source of frustration for viewers who just want one simple place to follow their teams.

I know my parents have FIOS and have the monumental channel. Unless that's changing but I don't see that anywhere.

Re: The Amazingly Suck Theodore Leonsis Thread
FIOS is a technology not vendor. Presumably they are connected through Verizon. Yes, you can buy a TV package through Verizon that gives you Monumental, but it's not one of the standard channels ala the old way, when the games were on I forget what channel. An NBC affiliate I believe.
Monumental is attempting to strike a deal whereby its offerings would come to viewers via YouTube TV, but Ted doesn't like the deal he's being offered.
If they wind up striking a deal, we'll have to sign up for YouTube TV. Last I looked that was a $60-70 month option on Verizon.
In short, Ted Leonsis is a colossal axxhole.

Re: The Amazingly Suck Theodore Leonsis Thread
Don’t be pedantic, Verizon calls their internet and TV offerings Verizon FIOS.
Spotify and Netflix have proven that people will pay for streaming if it’s a) convenient and b) a reasonable price. IOW what killed Napster wasn’t Metallicas lawsuit but Spotify offering instant access to whatever music you’d like for $9/mo. Ted could sell fans on the Monumental app if it actually worked and was, say $4.99/mo. $200 is just hilarious.

But League Pass doesn't help locals.
That said, if you have a VPN to disguise your location,
I'm not sure if that would work.

Well and here’s the stupid thing about this. It’s not even Ted. All this is being fouled up by his son. Baby Zacky is trying to follow in his dad’s footsteps by becoming a tech mogul. The part he’s missing is that AOL caught a hold of the market by giving away the product for free. Those CDs that had x number of hours of internet service would hook you with features then once you were in the pipeline the cost of added minutes wasn’t over the top unaffordable. People aren’t going to pay $20 a month for a single team. Or even 2 teams for real junkies who follow hockey and basketball.
The dumbest aspect though is that bars are not likely to spend extra for the add-on. Leastways not until the team is winning and gets popular. It’s an extra detail to keep track of, not just a common channel that comes with the usual sports package. So your bartender can’t just click over if it’s not something the manager thought to buy with the cable package.

They’re already hemorrhaging viewers with the tank. Now is when you’d want to give the product away for free, but dive into the personal interest stories of the players, like Olympics coverage special interest pieces, so people can get hooked watching these young dudes struggle and grow. Win or lose.
Then when they start winning you can charge a bit and steadily raise the prices a little at a time.
But billionaire baby is so out of touch he doesn’t realize people are struggling. The area is a sleeping giant if you can get the locals invested and not think your core business is those who buy suites. The numbers game will make your money back for you if you treat your audience with respect. This is not that. It’s some ‘let them eat cake’ bs. They even tried to charge $200 a year then made a big deal out of reducing the price to $180.
GTFOH. Sick of rich people.

Can someone explain, in two or three sentences, how this development is going to affect a person who currently watches games on cable?

If already you pay for a package that gets Monumental you’re probably fine except that your bill has likely increased over time. Like as much as +20$ a month.

That’s how League Pass works in every market. The local game is blacked out. You have to watch it on the local channel. So it’s not just Ted.popper wrote:dobrojim wrote:But League Pass doesn't help locals.

If your favorite bar is not willing to pay $20 a month to show the local team you need to find a new bar.doclinkin wrote:The dumbest aspect though is that bars are not likely to spend extra for the add-on. Except that in DC the Wizards won't be on a "local channel."
Ted is attempting to extract $20 a month from every local fan to watch our local team. It's disgusting.

It’s been a long time since the Zards were on a truly “local channel” that was available to everyone at no additional cost.payitforward wrote:DCZards wrote:That’s how League Pass works in every market. Re: The Amazingly Suck Theodore Leonsis Thread
Two years ago I could buy a single, sports-oriented cable package that brought me every local team plus a whole bunch more. That's flexibility based on differing consumer tastes.
Unrelated to the entirely new idea of making me pay just to see the local team.
Ted Leonsis is a billionaire who's greedy for more. As I wrote, he's shown himself to be a gross individual.
