How do you feel about being wrong about something you were so adamant about?

I have a better question. How does it feel to be a tool

Adamant ?

Go read what I wrote on page on before you write something so asinine. It wasn't adamant. I said what I thought they would do. I really don't care one way or another which they decided. I could see how either way could make sense. Specially if there was no Gortat on the team where he would get more minutes.

I hope he helps the team this year and I hope he gets better. If they trade him, I hope they get something useful for him. Or they could still resign him cheap which is fine with me. While he is here, I will root for him. If he stays in the league, I hope he improves. He hasn't done anything to make me root against him short of not fixing his free throw shooting form.

Very solid choice by Ted/EG and the right pick at #6.

Players like Kemba, Brooks and several other would have been solid picks but when you can get a 6-11 that has that heart, fire and skill, you go for that. They are the ones harder to find.

Another draft of solid personalities like we had last draft and this team will be in a lot better shape. If you can get them in trade, do that also.

This is a good move. Even if either show unexpected flashes of competence, an extension should be cheaper than their final year.

It means we're limiting the throwing good water after bad to the Gortat trade, instead of compounding the error by pretending there is any evidence that these picks were anything other than abject failures.

No really, hands aside, I wonder what people interested in drafting JV and Singleton saw during their draft period?

Also by the way, hope they develop and get better. Especially Singleton. I thought he had some skills. they just never developed them.

I admit it, I was excited about Singleton. The experts said he projected to be a James Posey-type, and we sorely needed a wing defender. We had just endured a season watching gimpy Josh Howard, Al Thornton, and Zo Gee platoon to handle SF, so the idea of drafting a true, defensive-minded SF w/ size and a nasty streak was music to my ears.

But, when a 3 and D guy can't hit 3s and can't play D at an elite level, there's not much use for him.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

An interesting comparison between Leonard and Singleton. Singleton never shot FTs well, but was respectable from the college 3 point line. Leonard was good from the FT line, but never showed much from the college 3 point line. It is really hard to project Leonard stepping into the NBA as a good 3 point shooter, but there was at least an indication that he had the ability to become one.

I think I remember Nivek saying that college FT shooting is a better predictor of shooting ability in the pros than college 3pt shooting is.

Another reason why some people on this board would likely make the Wizards front office better. I wonder if anyone on the Wizards staff thought about that?

But not at all hard to project Leonard stepping into the NBA and becoming an excellent player -- that's what his college numbers said he was likely to do. Singleton's college numbers, on the other hand, said he was likely *not* to become a good NBA player.

Note, of course, that it's unfair to compare those two guys -- Leonard had been projected near the top but he dropped; still he wasn't there when we reached for Singleton. Though Faried was. And Chandler Parsons was available when we picked Mack for that matter. His college numbers made him look a tremendous bargain in round 2. Oh well....

I think we can just write that off as EG and his staff not being able to judge talent. Really, nothing more...

...and yes Parsons was a guy that was mentioned by several board-members as a potential target for that 34th? Pick.

EG sucks at the draft. But Nene was better than expected, and Okafor, and even Ariza.

The NBA has really gone out of its way to make the draft irrelevant. Or to be precise, players wanting to come out way too early have made the draft irrelevant. By the time a player is mature enough to actually be producing more than his artificially cheap rookie contract, he's in the last year anyway.

I started watching NBA basketball in the eighties, when your draft picks were seasoned vets, by today's standards, and people still complained about rookie mistakes and how it would take time for a player to really have an impact. Now we're getting those players three years earlier, on four year contracts. I mean really. Does the draft even matter any more?

I think the only way to get anything of value out of the draft is to pick in the teens and go strictly by metrics, picking someone like Faried with just out of this world metrics that no one else is paying any attention to.

I'm not defending EG -- his drafting has sucked, sucked, sucked. But does it even matter any more?

The draft is just as important as its ever been -- perhaps more important because of the rookie salary scale. Basically, even a significantly below average player on a rookie deal can be a net positive because he's playing for so little money relative to the salary cap. Wall's play through his first three seasons would have been an albatross if he'd been making max money at the time, for example. On a rookie deal, he out-performed his contract.

But can you win a championship that way (with "blech" rookies on "cost-effective" rookie contracts earning significant minutes)?
