The assumption is that George would be gone at 26 -- if he was your choice on the evening of 6/26, you'd have had to make the trade Will made -- 26 & 51 for 24.

Given your joke about Sarr I assume you were against the pick in the run up to the draft? Expressed yourself as wanting to pick Sheppard? Is that the case?

In the end, of course, you have to pick someone. One guy. &, for this thread, that's what counts.

To make my purpose clear, let me restate it:
payitforward wrote:Given the lively exchange of views, positive & negative, on Will's first draft, it seems a good idea to gather everyone's draft... what YOU would have done -- whom YOU would have taken.

...To avoid revisiting the Deni trade, let's just assume it. I.e. for this thread, you're making the #14 pick.

As well, if you're happy w/ our having traded 26 & 51 for 24, no problem. Just list the guy you'd have taken at 24.

But if you're not happy with that exchange of picks, just list the 2 guys you'd have taken at 26 & 51 -- from those who were actually available of course. I.e. no picking Kyshaun George at 26! :)

& no trades that didn't happen either.

So, what I think is worth being clear about is who you would have taken at 2 the night of the draft. Not who you would have taken given what you saw in Summer League.

On 6/26, did you want Sarr at 2? Or did you want someone else? That night.

Did you want Bub at 14? Or was there someone else you would have taken? That night.

Would you have traded 51 to move up 2 picks & take George? Did you suggest the idea?

If not, who would you have taken at 26? Did you make yourself clear on the subject? Ditto at 51 -- who would you have taken that night if you'd had the pick & were the one making it?

Which I did. Both times. You just didn't bother to read for understanding :clown: I said Djurisic not Topic. Teammates, but not the same guy.

In the above I was pointing out the receipts that showed why it is plausible I would have picked those guys. And that I would have been wrong if I had traded Deni hoping to get Edey (plus assets). Which is the only reason I could have convinced myself to do so. Not Bub who I liked okay (PG who rebounded large) but who didn't shoot well enough from outside nor defend as I'd hope.

I laid out what my plan would have been, and why it would have failed. And therefore who I would have had to pick instead.

Based on the fact that they all got injured in summer league, I sure am not picking based on hindsight.

On draft day, my choice at #14 would have been Jared McCain, but that's mostly because I hadn't spent enough time scouting Carrington. After we made the pick and I took a good look at Carrington, I was happy with the pick - even before he played his first summer league game.

Also, if I had drafted Sheppard at #2, I definitely wouldn't have drafted McCain at #14. I probably would have gone with Ware based on need.

I didn’t have a strong preference about the 26th pick. Probably wouldn’t have made the trade.
I didn’t post about our 2nd pick. I didn’t want Sarr. Was torn between Castle and Clinghan. Can’t take credit for wanting Sheppard.

I feel like a lot of people on this thread are claiming they would have taken Sheppard 2nd when there weren't really that many in favor of it on draft day. A lot of people didn't love Sarr and were willing to trade down, but very few stated that they would have actually taken Sheppard over Sarr at #2.

Isn't this a re-draft thread? I both posted what my thoughts were on draft night, in a re-draft, I am taking Rob or Reed.

I took that to mean, who would you have taken on draft day based on what was known on draft day. Perhaps "redraft" is a poor title for this thread because "redraft" implies who you would take based on what we know NOW.

With Bub taken at 14, in real time I was seriously tempted in taking Filipowski at 26, fine for a 2nd/3rd big.

filiowski's floor is plumlee, which is good value at 26 and great value at 32

Not me man. I was loud all year in my belief that Sarr should have 'Do Not Draft' status for our team. I wanted Castle and Edey as a package, but was willing to accept Reed as a compromise. Here for example:

No doubt. It’s probably also a testament to teams’ belief that Castle can improve his shooting.

Right. The fact that he shot 72% in the motion shooting drills at the Combine with all eyes on him (as well as his fine % from the FT) goes towards his mental strength and probability of improvement in any areas of weakness in his game. So far in his short career when he was challenged to do a thing he met the challenge. He is being drafted for defense, but also for his determination and focus along with the raw potential of a guy who is able to match up with PGs but has the strength to play frontcourt positions. It's an upside play. Nobody in this draft is perfect. You are drafting for hope. Projection. Same with Sarr or Holland or Topic. You are drafting for your best guess on their likelihood to improve. Those of us who are doubters on Sarr think he may not meet that potential. Those of us who like Castle are betting on the dawg in him, to overcome whatever flaws he shows today.

Otherwise you take Reed Sheppard. Knowing he will never grow taller, but does already show a complete game. Fundamentally unflawed. Other than being a little overmatched defending his best NBA position.

Or you know. You trade back and draft both Castle and the big guy. The 2x Naismith winner. An even more finished product.

From the draft thread. Last thing I said on the topic of what we should do, other than defending the viability of Edey as an NBA player.

Obviously I want Sarr to be good now that he is ours. I can talk myself into it. Not going to crush him for who he isn't. He's got a ton of room to grow is all, so hopefully he manages to realize his full potential, or even close to it.

Makes sense.

One of the 2-3 most fascinating things to watch in the wake of this draft is how good Sheppard turns out to be. He and Edey.

I've got receipts too:

nate33 wrote:Eff it. I don't care who is on the board at #2, I want Sheppard.

I don't trust Sarr. I don't think he has enough "dog" in him to be a lynchpin at center. I think he is more Nic Claxton than Jaren Jackson Jr. Nic Claxton is a legit NBA player, but not a difference maker.

I think Sheppard will fill out a bit which will address most of his defensive questions. Physically, he'll be Payton Pritchard but an inch taller with a superior vertical leap (and that incredibly quick reaction time). And Pritchard is stout enough to hold up in a switch. Offensively, he is going to be a monster in the pick and roll once he tightens up his handle enough to take advantage when defenses overplay his pull-up jumper.

Ryen Russilo was reading off his Synergy numbers in his latest podcast. Sheppard is 97-99 percentile in all forms of shooting: whether catch-and-shoot, or off-the-dribble, or midrange. Don't overthink it. Just take the best freshman in college basketball.

The only problem is the awkward fit with Poole. Hopefully Poole will ball out well enough during Sheppard's rookie year that we will be able to trade him in time for Sheppard to take over as full time starter in Year 2.

Yeah, I realized yesterday that I'd given the thread a stupid title. Should have been something like "My 2024 Draft."

The parameters of PIfs post were clear and people still can’t get over Deni being gone. So if Bub becomes an All Star caliber player, solid #2 in the vein of a DBook type, are those in the “never would’ve traded Debi” camp, gonna stand on business and acknowledge they were wrong?
Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

2 - Shephard- this was actually close for me between him and Sarr- I really liked Shephard- I was discouraged by his tournament showing (I had Kentucky winning the entire tournament) but remembered what smarter people have said which is not to make much of the tournament/small sample size. I liked what Ryen Russillo said about Reed and just though that Shephard's 3 point shooting would at least give him a high floor. Fellow posters like Nate and Nat were high on him as well along with stat guys like Pelton/Kevin Broom. IIRC, Doc also ranted against Sarr and his poor rebounding numbers.

14- Carrington - I would have considered trading up for Topic. But had no problem with the pick given that he was young and had upside. I guess I heard the Wizards were linked to this pick beforehand.

24- Pacôme Dadiet - heard some people talking him up before the draft beforehand

51- Bronny James- Wizards ultimate revenge against LeBron.

Return to Washington Wizards
