Do we have a link to free and legal online feed of the games? Or do I use my usual sources...

I admit they aren't for everyone, but I loved doing language study vacations. I'd visit a country, take 3-4 hours of 1 on 1 classes in the morning, end before 1 or 2, then enjoy the rest of the day like a normal vacation. When I'd get sick of walking around in the late afternoon, I'd get some coffee or tea and review my notes. And I'd take another 30 - 60 minutes before bed to review again. I became somewhat proficient in Chinese -- and got my current job -- by taking 3 such vacations in 3 different parts of China over the course of a year, then studying on my own and with language partners in the interim. Of course this may be your definition of hell rather than vacation...

Thanks for the recommendation. I've resisted any type of formal instruction because in most subjects I'm a significantly better study when secluded and able to fully concentrate on the task before me, but that's something I'll definitely consider, especially if things don't begin to click pretty shortly.

Yes, we are all fatheaded idiots wasting time nerd-fencing about who has more pointed knowledge about the antics of sweaty mesomorphs in short pants. Just the bare facts, or nearly bare: in sweaty underpants.

We argue about it, because it is an inconsequential distraction from the mundane. We have no real effect on it -- except of course CCJ whose posts are swiftly scanned scribbled on a post it note and tacked to a corkboard that has been labelled "DO NOT DO THIS"-- and that may be the fun of it, we have no responsibility or ability to affect our pointless passion, it is out of our otherwise capable hands. I enjoy to all heck the conceptual pugilism of this discourse, as much or probably more than my hapless passion over the local sports team. Though at least here, in the word war, I can occasionally have an effect, put a score up on the board. Though the squabble is what matters, not the win column. If I cared about wins more than the quality of competition, well I'd be a dimwitted Heat fan now wouldn't I?

It's summer time, if we can't argue about basketball, shoot, I'd probably have to play mailbox baseball, or tie cans to cats tails or somesuch other mischief. Again, as that wise cat doclinkin always says, if not for the internet: the unibomber.

 I love this board. I really do. Wouldn't trade it for any other team-board on the site.

:)

The only time they ever did what I wanted is when they added Morris Almond for six games, which were all wins. Yet, in true bizarro universe style, that was all for him. I guess he bombed with them.

I am sure they know who I am. (And I'm shocked they still, apparently, doubt me!) As for not doing what I say, it's definite, doc.

They even twisted the knife by actually drafting Nate Wolters, and trading him for a guy I think might have "Thug "written under his draft profile picture.

That's okay. I am actually learning to appreciate it. I get to talk about Olynyk and soon, Wolters. :)

GRJr, will he be a great pickup? I'm curious to see it.

DCsOwn wrote:I'm actually in the process of teaching myself Portugese right now. My wife's from Sao Paulo and we're heading to Rio for the World Cup and I want to be able to function reasonably well without her as a crutch for the few weeks that we're there (she's also insisting that we visit once a year beyond that going forward, so having at least an elemetary grasp of the language should serve me beyond that occasion as well).

It ain't going too well atm, but I've been told that the initial stage is the most difficult. I've been getting a lot of construction analogies to assuage my concerns replete with foundation and basement references.

Still, I'm having fun with the entire thing, and come to think of it, im sure that I'll be using some type of monolingual thesaurus soon, only it'll probably be of the foreign variety.

My wife and I have been in Portugal several times in the last couple of decades and have a number of friends there. It's a *great* language -- and a great place too. I've never been to Brazil but of course would love to go there. Big fan of the music of course.

Everybody seems to think that Rosetta Stone is enormously helpful. I got along reasonably well in every way that involved an opportunity to read, as I'm fluent in French. But the sound of the language is so very different (from French and certainly from English) that I was easily lost in conversations.

My best bet at staying married might be to have a wife who doesn't understand a word of English.

No Rosetta Stone, please. That way neither one of us could get sick of the other's words. :)

My Impressions following Orlando Summer League:

1. Trey Burke looked like Trey Bust.
2. Andre Drummond is a superstar in the making.
3. Reggie Jackson is going to blow up. He seems like a future coach, too.
4. Jeremy Lamb looks good defensively. However, his decision making is very poor and he forces shots.
5. Steven Adams has to stop and think before acting. Great body and good coordination. Slow to react. It's going to take him a long while to develop his timing.
6. Peyton Siva is a keeper and a very good floor general.
7. BJ Young seems quicker and better overall than Burke. He's a scorer, not a distributor.
8. Romero Osby is a beast.
9. Olynyk REALLY DOES remind me of Larry Bird in many ways.
10. Ian Clark has a pure stroke. He's going to have a nice career in the NBA and/or abroad.
11. Who is A.J. Slaughter and where did he come from -- looks really, really good.
12. I like Robert Covington's game ... a LOT.
13. An rew NichOlsOn ---- No d, but big O.
14. Yep, Colton Iverson could help the Wizards.
15. There's some guy on Boston's SL squad who looks a LOT like Kobe.

2nd, its summer league. Can't wait to see them in live games so we can start to really evaluate them.

It will be great to watch a Wizards game tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing Otto and Rice of course. Another good thing about it is it gives Ernie a chance to mingle with other GMs. Maybe he can strike up some conversations and make some kind of progress.

DCsOWN,

The only thing I know about the Wizards is that EG is a chump.

But I do know language learning. Taught myself Japanese and Chinese as an adult and use both languages professionally now. Anyway, my advice is that Will is right and 1x1 instruction is critical. Not to learn but to practice. They will help you with speed, pronunciation, intonation, and pointing out recurring mistakes. Even three year olds learn to speak. It requires repetition more than anything. I always found textbooks that came with tapes. I would then study them and then listen to the tapes and review the dialogues over and over and over. Also, make Portuguese only times. Start at ten minutes only at first and work your way up where the two of you speak Portuguese only. Also, have her point at things and say it in Portuguese, as she would with a child. You can learn this language. Just try and bring it to life a little more.

Also, I found it useful to keep a small notepad to write down any new word or phrase or idiom you learn then keep a word file with all of these words or phrases that you can print out and study any time.

Just a quick off-topic question, how long did it take you to learn Japanese? Do you speak it fluently?

I tried learning Japanese in high school. I just didn't make enough time for it with the rest of the subjects I was doing. I barely passed the 3 year course. I still have a very basic understanding of the simple things, now 10 years later. I've got more time on my hands, and Japanese tourism is still pretty big in some parts of Australia where I live, it would definitely come in handy and further my career prospects.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

God #$%^%$^ damnit.

Just went to buy the NBA's summer league pass so I could check out our games and a few others. Its only available in the USA.

Oh well. If any NBA rep's read this, just know that I now feel morally justified in watching/obtaining these games illegally :)

Summer league related: Just watched Olynyk. First time i have really given him a look, perhaps a bit of a racial bias on my part. Dude looks like a good PF. Can't wait to see him against NBA level players though. He's already getting Bird/Dirk comparisons. I see it too, no word of a lie. He seems more Dirk, with Bird's intangibles and hustle. Again, its only SL, gonna need real games to really judge.

I hope this isnt one of those situations where "oh wow, Wizards passed on Olynyk for Porter" happens. I doubt it though. Porter is the goods, I have faith. Can't wait to see how he goes a bit later.

I know I have probably been the most anti Porter poster here, but I'm a diehard Wiz fan, so I'm rooting for him BIG TIME (cue the Muresan commercial memories) :)

Go Otto!
