Can we stop using this metaphor for sports?
Not really a metaphor, it was reductio ad absurdum (or at least an attempt to keep my ridiculous, sarcastic post going), and I just included it for rhetorical flourish. It was meant to be comically over the top, but i didnt mean to offend anyone by it. If the mods deem it offensive, please remove it or notify me that you want it removed.
That line had me in stitches, I enjoyed your sarcastic post.
Thanks man. Definitely wasn't my intention to make light of a serious issue like spousal abuse, I was just being satirical. I just really hate the fact that DC fans get crushed routinely for not supporting abject, persistent awfulness, but people turn a blind eye to the fact that the 76ers attendance has been a joke for years, Lakers fans took over the Garden years ago when Thomas ran the club and the Knicks were irrelevant, Mets fans used to invade Phillies home games when they stunk, the Penguins had terrible attendance years and were thinking about moving twice before stumbling into franchise players, the Dodgers fans stopped going to games when McCourt owned the team, Blackhawks fans did the same when they had their dog years etc etc. But we self-flagellate at the drop of a hat, without taking a moment to recognize the sheer ineptitude that bred this apathy or in some cases antipathy for this team in a for profit business. As soon as we're given competent teams, we give very solid support in every single sport we have (and we have them all), but the mindset that we're wrong for not protecting the building of a franchise that has the track record that this one has in the face of a globally popular, iconic franchise that's won in every decade since the 60's, often multiple times in succession is ludicrous to me. Lakers fans are everywhere, so are Bulls, Celtics and Knicks fans. Those teams with the exception of the Knicks have given their fans reason to come out and support their organization no matter where they are, and if tickets are available, they'll likely snap them up. The way the Wizards combat this is by giving their fans a reason to want to procure those tickets. The fact that they haven't done it doesn't reflect poorly on us, it reflects poorly on them. Period.
With that said, I was at the game today and did my part to give vocal support to the club. If anyone should be irrationally offended by what transpired it should be people like me. The players get paid to play here, it's their job to do so. The owner paid into a capitalistic enterprise. I pay money to be entertained and essentially because of civic and regional pride. I have the most legitimate claim to some sort of indignity, however tenuous, and I'm not the least bit ashamed of the city/area. This isn't a scenario where we have a consistently winning team that doesn't draw. We're the dregs. We have been for multiple, successive decades. We're just beginning to show signs of life. When my fellow fans feel like this organization has done enough to deserve their money, I expect them to come out in droves. Until then, continue supporting the team in the way I know that innumerable fans do when they are subjected to this level of constant incompetence, vigilantly from a distance. I'm not mad at you and I know that you guys don't suck.
