Huh... You can add this bit of trivia on to Shaq's condolences to MJ's family on draft night. Shaq has told people that the reason he was so effective as a big man is due to his fluidity. And that the reason he was so fluid is (like linebackers who practice ballet to gain nimbleness) he spent a great deal of his time trying to mimic Michael Jackson's dance moves. He said similar to what he learned to do with videos of basketball games, he would watch Michael's videos over and over and practice the moves.

On the topic of folk, I love Simon and Garfunkel.

This is in contention for the worst cover ever. Totally brutalized such a great song. I like the instrumentation but wow the singing and vocal effects make my ears bleed. This is Sounds of Silence Gone Wrong:

Will Oldham of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy starred in a hilarious video of Kanye West's "Cant' tell me nothing". Vid here. (Oldham's the bald one).

Kanye has a continually interesting blogby the way. Highly eclectic, everything from vids to fashion to booty shots of beauties. Some days he'll have a video by Bjork, other days it's Mos Def or whatnot.

I do love the duo. However, this is still my favorite Paul Simon moment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OafqYNCz ... re=related

But, this is my favorite song of his:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOQWSMT4 ... re=related

Those who like Paul Simon, did you check out Good Old War? To me, it's obvious they are doing a Paul Simon impression -- though it's a decent one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCZOAssZ ... re=related

And although he doesn't sound like him, I think of Jack Johnson as the modern Paul Simon. No, I'm not comparing them talentwise. Just one reminds me of the other. Could be because they both use photo-processing terms in their songs.

----------------------------------------------
Full stop. New thought. That Good Old War clip was from Fearless Music. They have a bunch of great clips from mathcore and ska bands -- like Streetlight Manifesto (probably the best ska band of the last decade) and The Dillinger Escape Plan (probably the best mathcore band ever).

My favorite bands at the moment:

Mastodon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=labytsb3gfI Song: Blood and Thunder
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiTzJQE67FA Song: Seabeast

Really good metal band out of Atlanta. One of the better ones out their when it comes to mixing in heavy parts with technical riffs. Blood and Thunder is one of their heavier and songs and Seabeast is more of a technical song. Not a big fan of the singer but their drummer is amazing and guitarists are pretty good.

Dream Evil:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKzUgDMDQ1c Song: Children of the Night

Awesome European Power Metal band. Super corny, but they are all very talented musicians. They aren't your modern day Dragonforce ripoffs. It's good to see bands still staying true to the roots of actual power rock. A member to check out from this band is their ex guitarist Gus G. Very very underrated.

Evergrey:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVAogwUX0y8 Song: More Than Ever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89giDpJfbVM Song: Blinded

Progressive metal band out of Sweden. I really like the singers voice.

Amorphis:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2yDhGJ-k78 Song: Dvinity

Don't really know how to classify them. Just a really really good band out of Finland.

Opeth:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4 Song: The Drapery Falls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxaFANthouM Song: Harvest

This is one of my favorite bands ever. Swedish based Progressive Metal band. They are a lot like Dream Theater that they write really long songs that range through many different styles. Singers clean voice is a lot better than James LaBrie from Dream Theaters and the guitar work isn't over the top technical but is really melodic and atmospheric.

Funnily enough Gilbert0Arenas, I was right about to do an experimental metal section (to counteract the "mellow experimental"). I was never a huge metal fan. I'm a punk or blues/rock guy. But, I love Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, etc. and grunge. And I was fascinated by mathcore. My main complaint with metal is the lyrics. It's usually a bunch of guys taking themselves way too seriously trying to pretend to be Norse Gods. And I tend to picture the miniature Stonehenge from Spinal Tap with the munchkins jigging around it. Oddly enough, Mastodon and Opeth are two of the only traditional, metal bands that have drawn my interest in many a year. And I dig Dream Theater too. I respect guys like Children of Bodom and Slipknot because of their talent, but it's not something to which I'd sit and listen. I guess I first found Mastodon through this:

Mastodon - Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife (Explicit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vf3VzVbrXU

Actually, the "metal" bands I like (which you probably wouldn't even call metal) are mostly hard grunge -- like Queens of the Stone Age, Motorettes, Saliva, Manson, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Helmet, Drowning Pool, etc. That or mathcore or rapcore. Random clips of songs I like:

All That Remains - Two Weeks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9z2j8JM ... re=related

Hed PE - Suffa (Rapcore - Explicit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzMJh8GrCN4&feature=fvw

Protest The Hero - Blindfolds Aside
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAutUObo ... re=related

Marilyn Manson - Blank and white (Explicit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVkiTV-X ... re=related

Marilyn Manson - The Fight Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C64FBkb_gRg

Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CwKplZn11A

Children of Bodom - Rebel Yell (Can't beat the original)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7O6ekKOE9g

Drowning Pool - Sinner
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_0Vzep9aoY

Nevermore - Born
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=impRqn44OCA&feature=fvst

System Of A Down - Chop Suey!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg&feature=fvst

Unleashed - The One Insane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CT5TpSy9ws

Mushroomhead - Solitaire Unraveling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U45NfWSX-Vk

I keep adding. OK enough. I'll do an experimental metal section, because I consider mathcore experimental. And I'm certain metalheads will tell me that the real experimental metal is grind and gore. To which I'd say, go to church once in a blue moon -- if only to check if the holy water still burns.

PS... Side note. I flippin' love these guys. More punk, than metal. Well, I guess they'd be categorized as rockabillycore or psychobilly

I played this once, but Battles' "Atlas" has been in my head for a couple weeks now (if you couldn't tell from the clips). You'd think it'd get annoying. But, I love pondering the puzzle that is the lyrics...

Battles - Atlas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t ... re=related

"The singer is a crook.
The singer is a crook.
The singer is a crook...
People won't be people
when they hear this sound
that's been glowing in the dark
on the edge of town.
People won't be people, no, the
people won't be people,
when they hear this sound,
Won't you show me what begins
at the edge of town?
The singer is a crook. Oh-whey-oh.
The singer is a crook. Oh-whey-oh.
The kitchen is the cook. Oh-whey-oh.
The scissors are the barbers. Oh-whey-oh.
The singer is a crook. Oh, I know.
The chorus, full of actors.
...The chorus doesn't matter."

Not only are the lyrics genius, but so is the song structure. It's formatted like old blues or a Baptist gospel (reflected in down-home phrases like cook, crook & barber. Not to mention "the edge of town" where, in Southern tradition, the crossroads are -- which is where one would undergo a transformation as explained in the song). But, this soulful, Southern structure is populated and driven by futuristic noise and auto-tuned, computerized voices. In fact, the only non-futuristic tones come from the drums. But, the beats themselves are a contradiction, because they are a modernized/mathrockish take on African, tribal music. So, the piece is transporting us back to this traditional, southern-fried, richly humanistic music; putting a modern spin on it; and, using it to explain a pointedly, anti-humanistic future. Friggin' brilliant.

As far as the Rubik's cube that are the lyrics, here's what I've surmised. "The singer is a crook" can have four interpretations as far as I can imagine. The singer is stealing his voice from the electronics (auto-tuner); stealing his technique from old blues artists; stealing his talent from God; or, stealing something (I presume the soul) of the listener. Personally, I believe that the line is meant to personify the singer's own electronics speaking -- explaining that they are the real singer. Or put another way, the machine is the real artist, or the scissors are the barber, the kitchen is the cook (not the human). Though again, this can be read as God is the "cook" -- not the singer. When reading it as God, the song plays as a mathrock version of a judgement day, blues song. Where everyone is judged for their sins (such as being a crook), and the glowing light of God is coming to transform them into angels (people who are not people). It's up for you to decide what it means to you.

I tend to think it's a story about technology evolving and its effect on humanity. I believe there are at least two voices in the piece (each with a different intonation). There is the singer's and the singer's own equipment personified (speaking much like Hal of 2001 -- complaining that the singer is stealing its "voice" or "soul"). I believe the song is saying that in the distant future -- when this "sound" is commonplace -- then we'll have evolved into something inhuman (probably via robotics -- making "people not people"). And the song is meant to question whether the humanity of music (perhaps even the soul itself) will survive this transition. Or whether all music will have to be stolen from the past or created by soulless computers. Then again, the piece is so great because it allows you to be the artist, while giving you a brilliant framework with which to work (combining the musical elements of past with the future).

If you want to see a similiar southern, gospel structure (which came from slaves sending messages via call and response songs), listen to "Shout" by the Isley Brothers. That tune even has the breakdown and build-up (as does Atlas), which orginated in southern, church tunes to entice worshipers out of their seats. So, now you can see how emotional and human this music is supposed to be, versus the actual message "Atlas" sends. And that's purposeful.

barely, you should check out Protest the Hero. They are a pretty good mathcore band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypCdGNe3Bvs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfgvsHn7Odw

Another band is, Between the Buried and Me. They aren't really "mathcore" but follow a lot of similar styles along with some other genres.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19UZd_DKs2Q

the latter part of this song is amazing. If you can get over how awful their singer sounds, the instrumentation done by them on all of their songs is simply amazing.

Here is another band that has some mathcore roots. The Human Abstract:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u9KDMWJsAM

Another one those bands where if you can mentally mute out the singers voice, they are really fun to listen to. But I guess that's true of majority of the metal bands.

I'll just throw this band out there because they fall on a little extreme end of music. August Burns Red:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrSC5cSzb_A

Breakdowns and awful singing galore but I really like the drummer and some of the stuff the guitarists do. Mostly the drummer. Dude is pretty good and somehow makes them audible.

EXPERIMENTAL METAL

Gilbert0, yep very familiar with Protest the Hero. I mentioned them eariler in this thread. I tend to gravitate toward the Minus the Bear, Maps & Altases, This town needs guns, RX Bandits, Abe Vigoda, Batlles, and Don Cab wave of math rock -- more so than mathcore. I think those above bands are, for the most part, genius. But, no doubt Protest the Hero is one of the top mathcore bands ever. And I agree with you about the others. Love that Between the Buried and Me clip. Thanks for that introduction.

What I mean by "experimental metal" are those bands pushing the artform. And the latest Harvey Milk album is probably the best example of it (since mathcore that is). That album was widely lauded and critically acclaimed as groundbreaking. Here's a preview:

Harvey Milk - Death Goes to the Winner
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZiB66BraPo

Here's another band viewed as one that pushed the boundries of metal.
Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOd-T58q ... 99&index=2

As I said, I'll list more when I have time.

MATH ROCK (more)

For the folks still confused as to what "Math Rock" is (and I'm finding that's a great deal), it's characterized by oddly-timed drumming, which drastically changes tempo, and usually guitar finger-tapping. "Mathcore" is the metal version of it. It's called math rock because of the random time sig changes -- which requires math to figure out the number of strums or beats that fit within the various time sigs.

This Town Needs Guns - 26 Is Dancier Than 4

Minus The Bear - The Game Need Me

i dont know Barely, Unleashed is pretty damn metal. that's straight up old school swedish death metal.

just check out their logo
Image

dug the koffin kats. gonna have to check them out some more. always a sucker for the stand up bass.

here's a, uh i dont know,melodic metal

Amorphis - House of Sleep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNTVFcFF2Ec

btw: if you like them they've actually been pretty hit or miss on album quality. they started out as a death metal band (and their finnish so you got to excuse the norse stuff) with some musical talent and tales from the thousand lakes was really good (kinda mixing maiden with entombed) but then they had a down spell. came out with a slightly new sound (not as heavy, actually singing) and "Eclipse" (what house of sleep is off of) which is (i think) pretty good (and kind of a combination of cathedral and tiamat).

oh why not, here's some old school metal progression

Bolt Thrower - the 4th Crusade

Entombed - left Hand Path
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdL-wNwX ... re=related
Entombed - Hollowman

(they veered from pure death metal after the first album)

Cathedral - Midnight Mountain

Tiamat - Whatever that Hurts

Carcass - Heartwork

Very cool clips, Bannd. Post more. I especially dig the Entombed. Really, I just like that one, Unleashed song. Reminds me of Danzig. Hell, I even like a Haste the Day tune -- Christian Screamo band. So, go figure. I like probably 15% of modern metal. But, I'll give anything a listen. I honestly believe Queensrchye fouled-up metal. It was they who ignited the trend of all those cringe-worthy, half-Celine Dion singers that took the Iron Maiden style; stripped the grit out of it; and puss-a-fied it. So, whenever I hear anyone reflecting their influence, I feel rather nauseous.

Deal is this with me 'n metal. See, I grew-up with a lot of musicians (especially metalheads, punks and a few rappers). One dude I was close with was a drummer for this death metal band. They were somewhat successful at the time (for a local band). I believe they were in the top 50 of best selling bands in the D.C. area one year (and I'm pretty sure I'm undershooting that). But, every time I heard them singing, "We're coming to take your soul" or whatever, I'd always think, "Really Eddie? How 'bout you try to pass shop class first. Then, work on becoming the fifth horsemen." BTW, you'll get this. Nevermore, especially in that clip, are doing their best Anthrax and Megadeth impression (who, as you know, were trying to be Iron Maiden). I kinda like seeing that style reborn.

Here's that Nevermore clip again:

Anthrax - Indians
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm4ohAcGJWg

Megadeth - Peace Sells (What a friggin' song this is. THIS is my kinda metal -- political thrash)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KDO_yCYcuU

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZlDZPYzfm4

And yeah, those Koffin Kats'er cool. A ska or rockabilly band's gotta completely suck for me to not dig 'um. Speaking of, I played that Messer Chups' Ministry cover before. Here it is again, with some more of their stuff. They are so damn good IMO, they reached a level of kitsch that few bands have ever attained, that it's hard for me to not list all their stuff. They are what bands like the Aquabats shot for and missed (at least IMO). May not be your kettle of tea, Bannd. With kitsch bands (like experimental groups) it's hard to judge who is going to cheer or boo.

As I said, Bannd, post more. Start a punk topic -- if ya want. I know it's easier for me because I already use YouTube as another iPod and just drag and drop here from existing playlists. But, I'd love to know if you have some hidden, punk treasures.

Hey barely, I really liked Minus the Bear stuff. Any suggestions on albums?

As far as Melodic Death Metal, my favorite band is Amon Amarth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhptP8j-t-M Cry of the Black Birds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-UbViuK ... re=related Death in Fire

Another band I really like in this genre is Light This City.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL8XL9v8vU4 Remains of the Gods

Children of Bodom were a really good melo death band too. Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper are great albums, kinda like Hate Crew Deathroll even though it sounded a bit too commercial for this genre.

In Flames from Lunar Strain till Whoracle were really good too.

Wow, love that Light This City clip. Thanks ya for that. Minus the Bear albums? All of them. Honestly. I think they are a touchstone band. I believe math rock is easily the most important movement of the era. And if I were to list the non-mathcore bands that carried that movement the farthest in the last decade, without a second thought I would say Don Cab and Minus the Bear. Like most bands, they started out less complex and less produced. But, honestly I enjoy every stage of their evolution. Here's a taste test:

Early -- This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mCygQ5GSMM

Middle -- Highly Refined Pirates album. Guess if MTB fans had to pick, they'd pick this album. Suppose I'd agree.

Later -- Planet of Ice album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsZGfzPiJC0

For my tastes, they are all great. BTW, the clips you watched before are off the "Menos el Oso" album. And they also have an album where they do acoustic versions of their best songs. I wouldn't start there though. It's a nice change of pace, but the originals are better.
