But I think the lack of enthusiasm for voting for Dems in 2024 is a result of black people voting in droves for Dems in self defense - and saving the Dems bacon - over and over again, for the last forty years - and getting absolutely NOTHING in return. The big payoff black people got from supporting Dems is a decades long War on Drugs, which for some reason we are only now starting to understand was basically a war on young black and latino men, who interestingly enough may have been the demographic that threw the election to the Republicans last November. That's the one demographic that moderate Dems just refuse to listen to, and now we're all paying the price for their stubbornness.
The Black and Brown voting population that you’re primarily talking about (young people) are particularly susceptible to being duped by the lies and half-truths that masquerade as the truth on social media. That had a lot to do with why some of them (not all of them) either didn’t vote or chose a scumbag over a woman with dignity, empathy, and intelligence.
While the Dems are far from perfect, when you dig below the surface they are MUCH better than the Repubs on a range of issues that impact Black and Brown folks, including education, the environment, labor laws, voting rights, healthcare, criminal justice, etc.
You say Black people have gotten absolutely nothing in return for their support of Democrats? Well, it was a Dem president (Obama) who gave us maybe the most important (and progressive) law in modern American history—the Affordable Care Act. Literally millions of poor, low-income, and working class Black and Brown people, as well as White folks, now have access to lifesaving healthcare services as a result of that law. And what’s more important than your life?
(You always bring up the War on Drugs but the Black community that I’ve spent my 50 plus years being a member of have concerns that go well beyond the War on Drugs.)

Re: Political Roundtable Part XXXIII
oh my, thanks to a bunch of you who recently posted. Some really good stuff
esp consig.
Last night's news was especially disturbing. The mass firings at Justice and FBI
and the news that musk people are trying to get their hands on the govt
checking writing system. What could go wrong?
Maybe one of our legal guys can offer a ray of hope. Can judges mitigate any of the Justice stuff?
I have my doubts but I don't have very deep knowledge about what a judge can do or how
it could be enforced if any of them wanted to challenge any of this stuff.

A lot of what we call 'thought' is just mental activity
When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression
Those who are convinced of absurdities, can be convinced to commit atrocities

Re: Political Roundtable Part XXXIII
Yeah at my agency, where we expect that the Trump admin will look at us favorably compared to USAID, our strategy is to lie low and obey meekly and hope no one notices us. Standing up and saying "I DISOBEY THIS ILLEGAL ORDER" is a terrible idea, ESPECIALLY at USAID

Conservatism used to mean that progress happens conservatively. We are deliberate and sure in our footing before taking on radical changes to the status quo, so that citizens and businesses can adapt accordingly, and if we are going down a wrong path, the fallout is not as catastrophic. And also, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Basically all "conservative" is anti-liberal vs. having any actual policies.
