Awesome...Ted - you da man!

Yeah, they got me with the fine print. The first report was "Whoop, whoop!" and then they back tracked. :-?

Don't know if anyone saw this but...

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/local- ... al-fi.html

Purchase agreement signed for Wizards
Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis on Sunday signed a purchase agreement with the estate of Abe Pollin, committing Leonsis to purchase the 56 percent of the Washington Wizards and Verizon Center that he does not already own.

The agreement is the next-to-last formality before the properties are officially turned over to the former AOL mogul, which is expected to take a month to six weeks.

Leonsis will now formalize his agreements with lenders to finance the purchase.
The purchase agreement means Leonsis, who leads a closely-held group of investors known as Lincoln Holdings, will likely take over the Wizards in time for the June NBA draft.

The timing will allow Lincoln Holdings to have input on player selections as he seeks to rebuild the ailing franchise.

Great news. It seems like EG will be GMing, but he definitely should have clear direction from Leonsis.

From Ted's latest blog:

We are a young team; we have some cap space. We have “optionality”. This shortened season - 66 games - a compressed schedule will create a dynamic and fun sprint of a season; all starting for us the day after Christmas.

Much more significantly, everyone who is interested or concerned with the long term direction of the franchise should read this email response from Marc Cuban, explaining why they are letting Barea and Chandler go. Most importantly:

Marc Cuban wrote:The reality is that in the new system, cap room will have far more value than it had in the past. I realize that everyone is all freaked out about how and where free agents and future free agents are going, but it’s not just about getting one guy.

We are not saving cap room in hope of that one super special free agent being there. It’s about being in the position to improve every year and possibly add some significant, younger players next year and in future years.

What I don’t think people understand is that once a team hits the tax level the ability to improve our team is reduced dramatically. In addition, your ability to make trades is reduced. So basically, if we made the move to keep everyone together with five-year deals, the team we have today is going to be the team we have for the next five years. If we were a young team it would be one thing. But we are not a young team.

So Cuban is essentially endorsing the path that Ted has taken -- get young, clear the cap, accumulate assets. You'll be able to add talent down the road via cap space. Patience, Wiz fans. This is going to work.

Ooh, optionality. It's not just for breakfast anymore. Hey, I'm just glad Ted remembers he still owns the Wizards. Those were interesting comments by Cuban - they have made it tougher on lux tax teams to maneuver, and I think that's lost on these folks who cry that nothing's changed.

Ted on the Importance of the Draft

The entire thing is worth reading, but I'll pull some interesting passages:

Ted wrote:Today in the Washington Post - there is a series of articles about the importance of the draft to help a team forge an identity - replenish depth and add talent to the roster. Young players growing up together also help to form a new culture and the young players are more easily “coachable” than veteran star players who have habits formed and reinforced through previous success in different systems.

The draft is key to all sports and all franchises; Tom Boswell talks about it here for the NFL.

Ted has mentioned this bit a good deal -- that the Wizards want to build their own new culture. The vets they had here (Jamison, Butler, Arenas, Hawyood, etc) were set their ways and their opinions of themselves and what they deserved.

With the draft - and rookie contracts - you have some comfort in the time it takes to develop prospects.

NBA players come into their prime statistical years at 25 to 26 years of age.

Folks, Nick Young is 26. The fact that they haven't locked him up yet tells me all I need to know -- and gives me great comfort. They simply don't see him as a foundational piece.

We know we also have to add to our roster via trades - and via free agency. But free agency is like the lottery - home run signings happen few and far between; it is hard to plan for it; with the draft - you have many viable options under your direct control; you can have multiple options and it is the best way to form an identity and man all positions.

This is a promise that there will be more moves in the coming years.

Paraphrasing: Vesely, Seraphin, Singleton, Wall and Crawford all look great.

Sure, what else is going to say.

I am pleased we have embarked on our rebuild via the draft. We have many more moves to make over the coming years; but we have built our foundation in the right way - I believe.

We have two drafts under our belt. We will have one more this next off season.

We will then have stock piled young players and prospects. We will be ready for success - as our young players mature.

We will manage the salary cap wisely.

This strikes me as code for "we're tanking for one more year" and then we're going to shift up a gear in terms of consolidating and acquiring talent.

I'm excited for the season and for the continued growth of this group.

It's easy for Cuban to say that when his team just won it all last season.
Bickerstaff: who's up for kickball?!!
Ed Wood: Only if it's the no-pants variety.

Found the nice Ted Thread. Ted says all the right things in his latest blog, the man does appear to follow (or has a staffer follow) what is written in the media, blogs etc. and responds accordingly when he feels it is necessary.

I agree that was a good blog post by Ted. He was very open about his process and seems like he has the Wizards and Caps on the right track.

One quote I did find a little interesting

The Capitals, however, spend near the salary cap ceiling. We operate a fantastic public facility, provide top-rate fan service and experience (as we do for the Wizards) and have an AHL partnership that makes other teams envious – all of this following a reboot of our team.

I know the farm system is a lot more important in Hockey, but there seems to be a big gap in the Wizards' D-League arrangement and a number of other teams in the league.

The 'farm system' isn't the only place where there is a big gap...upgrades to medical staff and practice facilities would be a good place to start. Other amenities that athletes seem to love are chartered flights, 1st class accommodations, etc. I wonder if Ted has any thoughts on that...

I would find if hard to isolate one part of what he posted since so much was in there that I believe in and have been promoting for years. Ted is awesome. It is great that he communicates his plan to us.

I just posted the EG/Randy interview in which they spoke about tweaking the coaching staff more.
Randy spoke a lot about player development and how he is on top of the off season.
Ted is talking about other investment besides just players. Things like facility upgrades.

He talks about not changing just to change but to do it with a purpose and direction.

What are you talking about?

Ted has talked a lot, he once proclaimed Crawford and Blatche as part of a new Big Three. As fans, let's see if they do bring-in help for development assistance, let's see if ground is broken for a new practice facility and if we go-after FA's. The talk is nice though.

Closgs

Not following your gripe.

What would you expect a new owner to say about those players ?

That they suck and we can't wait to get ride of them.

There was a lot in that blog that was accurate good stuff. The organization has been making good decissions. Stop being so sour.
