If that's a question, the answer is no. Redd was a 2nd round pick, so he wasn't drafted for anything except for being a marginal prospect with good size. He worked and worked and worked on his jump shot and became a much better shooter in the NBA - while being Ray Allen's understudy in Milwaukee. He was never known for good D.

Beal will be a very well-rounded NBA player. He's better than Redd at almost everything. And, at least now, he's not as good a shooter as Redd, so they're more like polar opposites.
I like Beal, but I haven't seen any above average play making yet, I'm sure he'll work on it but lets not put the kid on a pedestal yet. Redd averaged about 4 rebounds a game, I'd be surprised if Beal got close to 6 per game. He does play D pretty well though for his age though. I did underestimate him in this aspect. My comparison with Redd was mostly regarding to his shooting potential. I don't see him becoming the shooter Allen was, but I think with work he could become the shooter Redd was/is.

Re: Bradley Beal
I was just about to post in here to see if someone savvy could compare Bradley Beal's college/SL stats/adv. stats with that of Kyrie Irving's and give me a run down.
Then i remembered Kyrie didnt play much if at all in college, and summer league was cancelled... comparing his rookie NBA season wouldnt be fair....
I just want to see basically who was the better shooter.

As you point out, Irving got hurt and didn't play much. When he did play, he was terrific. In YODA, he rated as a solidly better prospect than Beal. Beal's score was typical of a top 5 pick in most drafts; Irving's was good enough to be the top pick in most drafts.
Here's a look at their numbers, keeping in mind that Irving played 11 games; Beal played 37...
Code: Select all
PER40 Irving Beal
Min 27.5 34.2
efg .615 .525
2p% .569 .541
3p% .462 .339
FT% .901 .769
eOrtg 131 110
Usg 19.6 15.1
Reb 4.9 7.9
Ast 6.2 2.6
Stl 2.1 1.6
Blk 0.8 1.0
Tov 3.6 2.5
Pts 25.3 17.2
Irving shot better from everywhere. Irving used 4.5 possessions more per 40 minutes, but was WAY more efficient. Despite the injury (which dinged Irving's score in YODA), Irving's overall score in YODA was about the same as other freshman PGs like Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. His score was a bit better than Derrick Rose, whose score was a bit better than John Wall.
I've mentioned this before, but...Beal's score in YODA was comparable to freshman SGs like Jordan, Drexler and Vince Carter. He was behind the freshman performances of Ray Allen and James Harden.

That is a sick video. His ability dribbling two balls shows a left brain/right brain ability that is crazy sick. And he works so hard. Endless motor.
He looks like he is going to be one of those crafty types who is good with the ball fakes right out of the gate. Looks like he will be efficient in his movement. Someone who plays under control and who won't force things but who is savvy enough to move the defender to set up his shot. Already working on step backs and counter moves. Lots of work with his left hand. What didn't he show in that video. That was amazing.
Kind of the opposite of who Wall was when he got here. Wall was all about his speed which was one speed. Go really fast.
Beal seems to be working on a vet game right out of the gate. It my not be eye popping or maybe it will be but I think it will be efficient. I don't think he will be driving as a core part of his game like Harden, but I see everything else in his game.
Should be interesting to see if he can pull it off in a real NBA game. If he can bring some lock down D and rebounding along with this kind of an offensive game, he could have a very good rookie year. Its amazing he just turned 19. This kid has the potential to play more like a 2nd or 3rd year player in his first year. That would be amazing and it would greatly accelerate the rebuild.
And if that were to happen, I have no fear at all that it would go to his head. He just seems so grounded.
This kid shows so many things in his game it is crazy. I have some names in mind but I don't want to go there just yet with the kid. I see the entire package though. I hope we get to see it this year.
ROTY ? I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was. I see the potential for him to be one of those players that hits the ground running and doesn't look back.

I kinda have the opposite take. Seeing Beal work on having a complete game is exciting, but I also think he might try to do too much shot creation as a rookie and end up being relatively inefficient. Don't get me wrong, in the long run, it'll be good for him. But in the short run, not so much. It's easier for a rookie to be an effective catch-and-shoot role player (like Landry Fields or Kawhi Leonard) than it is for him to be a dynamic scorer and creator.

That isn't the opposite take. Not sure why you think it is. I get the sense you actually look for things to disagree with me about even when there is nothing there.
I think most of his scoring it going to be catch and shoot but I would add, catch, fake, step, shoot to that list.
I don't see him doing much isolation, creating, and trying to drive by picking apart the D. He won't over dribble like Nick or Dray would.
The ball is going to be in and out of his hands one way or another. He will either shoot, fake one dribble and shoot or pass. I think his game will be very efficient.
The last think I am worried about is Beal trying to do to much in a game.

The big difference between Beal and players like Leonard and Fields is that Beal, for better or worse, will be asked to play a much more prominent role for the Zards than Leonard/Beal were asked to play for their respective teams as rookies. Thus it makes sense for Beal to be working on diversifying his offensive game.

Give Nate more credit. He's not trying to find reasons to disagree. He simply reads your posts, which is something you apparently don't do.
Me, I'm just looking for things to disagree with.

Hands11, you think Beal will be efficient right out of the gate. My concern is that he will be inefficient because he's trying to have such a complete game rather than focusing on one or two skills and building from there. If that's not the opposite take, then I simply don't understand you.
And again, I'm not trying to bash Beal here. You gotta love his desire to improve all aspects of his game and I'm sure it'll help him in the long run. I'm just not so sure how much it'll help him in the short run. I think he might have a bit of Jordan Crawford in him in that he'll look real good at times and he'll demonstrate an ability to create his own shot, but when you look at the stats, you'll see relatively poor efficiency. (Though hopefully, he won't be the unmitigated gunner that Crawford is.)

I can see him having an up and down season with some flashes of brilliance. That is not unusual at all for rookies, even the good ones. His good nights may look a little like Jordan Crawford's. However I think his bad nights will look a lot different. I think they will look more like the Mike Miller that played for the Wizards where he is basically invisible. With Jordan Crawford you always notice him, it is just sometimes he is hitting shots and sometimes he is not.

My comment about efficient was.. He looks like he is going to be one of those crafty types who is good with the ball fakes right out of the gate. Looks like he will be efficient in his movement. Someone who plays under control and who won't force things but who is savvy enough to move the defender to set up his shot. Already working on step backs and counter moves.
I doubt the kid will try to do to much. Him playing like Crawford is the farthest things from my worries. This is a kid that will do exactly what his coach asks of him. Last team he joined that had established players, he was very mindful to fit in and only did more offensively when the coach urged him to.
I'm glad Beal is coming into a more settled situation then Wall did. Or for that matter, all our young players. I trust Randy to develop him correctly and I expect he will listen to this coach.
Personally, I think his "primary" initial focus will be defense, rebounding, moving the ball, getting out in transition and hitting the wide open catch and shoot. That should be enough to keep him busy as he gets a feel for the league and the speed of the game.
If you think he will try to do to much and be Crawfordish, present some evidence to support that. Nothing I see from his history or his personality supports that worry.
dangermouse's comment is more likely the case. When he isn't hitting, he wont over shoot. If that isn't enough to help them on that night and they need that outside shooting, they will roll in other players.

If you think Beal will be efficient and only shoot open shots, rebound and defend, then YOU support it...
The point is, neither of us can support any of our statements because Beal hasn't played a minute in the NBA. My "evidence" is in the training videos where I see him trying a lot of step-backs, ball fakes, spin moves, etc. which look to be the type of shots you attempt while being closely guarded. Obviously, that's not much to go on because it's just one video which is trying to capture the more interesting parts of his workout. A video of him shooting 500 catch-and-shoot jumpers from the corner wouldn't be very fun to watch.
