So... lets leave ourselves with Wall, Beal, Porter, Sato & Brown next year for $96m.

With all we've had to work with over since 2010, we would have left ourselves with 1 player, Brown, from the last 6 years of drafts, trades & FA signings -- Wow, what a testimony to futility. Incompetence & indifference.

Not that we're much better off now....

My biggest focus is two things:

1. Getting a starting lineup of Wall/Beal/Oubre/Porter/???

2. Getting Markieff Morris off this team ASAP, for anything, even just flat out cutting him.

$96 million sounds about right, but on the flip side the cap is scheduled to go up to $109 million next offseason so we have some room. I tweeted about this over the weekend, they should be fine cap wise with Wall's extension kicking in because it looks like the cap will rise in increments of $5 million per year over the next 2-3 years. It makes sense for Ted to want to get out of the tax this offseason, he doesn't want the repeater penalty.

I still have faith in Kelly maybe I'm the only Wizards fan who does. That's a lot to get love. Even a first round pick? Kelly goes to Cavs and becomes a real good player and we will look stupid.

Positive for Love is I think his next contract could be a bargain. He won't opt out as a result though. Don't want him on his current deal.

Actually, I was moving too fast there: I assumed that Love would not pick up his option, but I think he will.

If he does, make that $121.5m for 6 players. Obviously, it would be impossible to get to a full roster w/o exceeding the tax. Plus being a repeater. Plus having to retain Sato for the following year.

Lets be conservative & say that Sato costs $9m that year ('20-21). Love is gone of course. So, now we're at @$110m for 5 players. So... all we need to do in order to stay under the tax for the 3d year straight is sign 9-10 players for @ what...$1.5m each?

The goal of this strategy is to do what, exactly? Be the 5th best team in the EC? Is that it?

I get it, the hope here is that he doesn't. He'll turn 30 right before the season starts, he'd be entering his age-31 season next offseason. If he opts in, he'll be going on 32 years old. I think it makes sense to sign opt out and go for one last big contract rather than trying to head into free agency at 32. Truthfully, I think that's why the opt out was there in the first place, otherwise he could have just taken a straight up 4 year deal.

nba salary situation is starting to look like a disaster, you used to be able to count on tanking teams to take on bad contracts, but there's maybe one team in the NBA that would be willing to take on a horrible contract right now and that's Atlanta

that and nobody has money, free agents are in for a real bad time

I wonder if Kuzma + Ingram + #1 draft pick + Deng FOR Wall + Morris would work for Lakers...?

I'd say it's the opposite. It makes sense to take $26.5m now rather than gamble on doing better at 31. In fact, he won't do better; he'll do worse. IOW, I think it's almost certain that he will opt in.

&, anyway, you can't make such a deal based on what you "hope" will happen. Not even Ernie is that incompetent -- or so I "hope" at least! :)

If I'm going to hope, I'd rather hope that Wall & Beal both return to 2016-17 form, that Otto Porter continues his development, that Oubre plays the whole season the way he played the first 1/3 of last season, that Troy Brown translates at least the defensive part of his promise (if not more) into being an effective player, that Satoransky plays as well or better than last year & gets 2000+ minutes, that "Issuf Sanon" turns out to be a translation from Ukrainian into English of the words "Jayson Tatum" & that he stays/plays w/ the team this year, that Austin Rivers gets significantly better (given that we're stuck with him), that Devin Robinson actually is a rotation-level NBA talent, that Sheldon Mac comes back & is a competent backup at the 2-3, that Mahinmi & Smith return to 2016-17 form, & above all -- way, way above "all", stratospherically far above "all" -- that the conceited incompetent who runs this franchise is sent packing.

But, I am definitely not doing anything based on "hoping" that Kevin Love walks away from $25.5m!! :)

If anything, Im still keeping an eye on Philly. If they dont get Kawhi, they will want to compete but not jeopardize 2019 cap space.
Morris is from there and they need a backup big.

Simmons / McConnell / Fultz / Shamet / Milton / Bayless
Redick / Korkmaz / Zhaire Smith
Covington / Anderson / TLC
Saric /
Embiid / Holmes

They have 6 Pg's for god sake. Morris & Smith for Bayless & Bolden would catch my interest. Sign Looney and Bjelica (Or Williams).
Id include a pick swap if there was a Korkmaz for Meeks swap thrown in as well.

They definitely want to move Bayless. Bolden is a prospect. We'd save some $$ -- absolutely do it. But, I think they like Bolden, & he is a "backup big" too, no? They might do a straight swap of Morris for Bayless. Is he more useful to us, given $$ is the same & both guys are expiring?

Looney for sure -- but... I doubt Ernie's staff has him on their radar. Which Williams do you mean? Bjelica would be cheaper than Morris certainly. Not much of a player. Tolliver is better than either of them, but... he's gone :(

As much as this is an incredibly depressing first few days of free agency and offseason overall, I do think Grunfeld has something up his sleeve. The guy is a total clown when it comes to press conferences and overall as a GM. Let's face it, it's probably best that he doesn't overpay for some of these guys in free agency considering what he did in 2016. Jason Smith is making more than Boogie. Mahinmi is making about 3 times his salary. He basically lauded Gortat during the draft press conference for Troy Brown Jr. and then trades him the next day. Says Mahinmi is a solid starter. But he definitely likes to make deals, esp. ones to undo the mistakes he made before. I'm not saying he'll make a good deal but I think something is going to happen because the fanbase is apathetic right now and cheap Ted wants to save $$$.

God No... I know you and others hate Morris, but bayless is HORRENDOUS. RPM ranked him 94 of 97 PGs... worse than IT, Derrick Rose and Dellavedova...
He doesnt rebound, pass, shoot efficiently, draw fouls, or play defense. He is thought of as a buyout candidate.
I'd rather take my chances on Smith TBH. Cheaper, and if he is hitting 3's he has neutral value.

Morris for Bolden. Sign Looney and Bjelica. Call it a wrap.
At the deadline, we'll have plenty of options to get under tax
