I know Trumpists who are financially hurting now, and they don't see the logic in respecting orders to stay home if there is no financial assistance to make that possible. This was the Democrats' golden opportunity to contrast their compassion with that of the Trump party, their chance to make McConnell pay up or stand on center stage and say "tough" to hurting Americans, including Trump supporters. Now it looks more like "Congress" than "Republicans," and Trump gets yet another pass.

Meanwhile, Ivanka tweets this chillingly aloof and hilariously depressing image:

S’mores, house fires. Okay, I’m being fanciful. Or ridiculous. That said
the voting public did elect, in our gerrymandered EC, a guy who trotted
out the most patently ridiculous campaign talk, only I can save us. No
one should EVER have put their trust in anything like this.

Tell me how Pelosi and Schumer are supposed to force Republicans to act like decent human beings in the background of a crisis?

Republicans have outflanked Democrats on this. Like pancakes said, Romney basically proposed UBI and Chuck and Nancy are wonking themselves to death over it.

Dems had best leverage yet as Trump watched his world collapse around him. They should have been asking for the moon, either forcing him to actually do something (a lot of things) for the nation or freeze framing him forever not doing anything for the nation. You can be compassionate and cutthroat at the same time. This could come back to haunt them in November.

I think Schumer is a big part of the problem. Pelosi on her own has been able to handle Trump very well and at least puts pressure on McConnell.

Could he be more of a modern day snake-oil salesman? His sense of logic is non-existent, while his belief in himself is so absurdly high. It's a startling combination. He's the real life "But I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night" guy combined with being a chronic liar.

Ivanka: Poor people have brooms, don’t they?
Jared: I don’t know. Maybe they take them home for storage. Where do brooms go at night?
Ivanka: Remember that broom we bought at Tiffany’s?
Jared: The one made of silk and mahogany? After the children posed with it, we gave it to a Mexican boy for a joke.

PS: You just know their s’mores have Belgian chocolate, French biscuits and pastry cream

rant alert (someone pushed my button this morning)

FB post - We should support the President. He's really not such a bad guy.
Y'all just reflexively hate him.

Me - (here, not in reply to her post) - He's earned our animus over and over again.
He's shown himself to be completely incompetent to handle this situation.
What would possibly lead anyone to believe he is doing a good job?

them - he's just misunderstood and really a nice guy

He’s too smart (/end sarcasm) to realize how incredibly foolish he is

Plus what could anyone point to that would lead an objective person to
think he had one scintilla of empathy.

I was re-reading the Facebook timeline of a trump supporting friend that I had filtered out- makes Bernie supporters seem mild.

Also, Trump supporters were upset that people were celebrating when Rush got cancer but will still defend Trump when he does this

He can't even admit he's being sarcastic and comes off pretty weak for that.

Katie Porter: It's 2020 and there's a pandemic. We really ought to pass some procedural rules that allow for remote voting.
GOP: Madame Congresswoman, these are hallowed halls of history and tradition. No, we will not pass any such rule.

*3 GOP Senators and a GOP Congressman go into self quarantine*

GOP: Hm.

The guy is an absolute sociopath and scumbag. This is the problem with empowering authoritarians and wannabe dictators. Situations like this require a leader that has empathy and the response you see from China, Iran, the US shows what happens when leaders don’t have it.
