Re: JaVale McGee
Regarding the idea that stars win championships, what does this make Posey? Lets face it, once you have a your "star" set, you also need the right role players. As sashae points out, the winning teams have role player "slots" whereas we do not. This might be why EG isn't trying to draft role players. What's the point of drafting a role player if you don't know how they'll fit in. You're almost better off looking to draft for upside potential and see what develops.
Usually, we at least are drafting athletes. This isn't a bad thing, but I really wish we would start working the role player slot. I almost felt we had that somewhat with Mason last year. We need another "knock down the three" type of guy - perhaps NY gets off his duff and does this (unfortunately, apparently nobody has clued NY that this role also requires defense with your knees bent).
So yeah, McGee definitely has great star potential, and that would be frickin SWEET in the center position. Lets all hope he becomes the next Akeem Olajuwon. I just wouldn't mind drafting a Charles Oakley at this point, especially if Patrick Ewing isn't available with the 18th pick.

But theres no guarantee that just because you draft a guy to be a role player that he will turn into one. Guys with limited upside have just as many problems becoming good role players as guys with huge upsides do with becoming stars.
Posey was a cheap FA acquisition by the Celtics, late in the off season. He wasn't good enough to stick around with the team that drafted him, let alone a few teams after that. You can develop role players, or sign them for cheap. You draft for stars. The MLE and the LLE are used to find role players, when your team is ready to compete. You cant sign any stars with the MLE.

Even though he stunk the joint out tonight, I'm beginning to like his potential and while I would have preferred an Arthur or Hickson, those guys wouldn't be playing this year either. Not with Blatche around. He really needs to go to a Big Man's camp and work with Pete Newell or Kareem or some other old big dude (Ewing?) and realize that you lose your effectiveness when you put the ball on the ground so many times at 7-feet. The presence of Blatche I think could confuse the kid. Blatche overdoes it with the dribbling as well and still turns it over too much, but he makes a quick move when he gets in the paint to go around people. Jav can't do that yet.
Actually, I'd just leave him in Vegas.

Re: JaVale McGee
Mcgee is a very good pick at 18. He showed the various skills he has and what he can do albeit inconsistently. I don't think sitting on the bench will help. Either bring in a big man who can tutor him all year or let him play in the D-League or both[while he continues working on strenth]. I would prefer to see him get the tutelage with a short stint in the D[5 games] and if he plays good enough--get him some back up game time immmediately. Nothing will take away from the fact that he is athletic 7-1 and can help the team by blocking a couple of shots running the floor grabbing a few rebounds and using his length at the basket. Like to see him stay away from the 14 foot jumpshot and really concentrate on the post/footwork and explosive movements in the post. He's a player albeit raw and he needs to be brought along aggresively. I think playing with a really good PG who can get him some easy dunks would help him--he looks like a guy who will need confidnce boosts until he gets it down. Unlike Oche[wahtever it spelt] this guy has some real nice potential in the post.

Agree and disagree.
Arthur and Hickson will be playing this year for their teams because they are further along in development than McGee. Let's compare minutes during the season.
Totally agree about Big Man camp and I'll add NBDL as-well. Since McGee came out too early, the guys needs lots of playing time under careful supervision while he learns our system. Improve fundamentals first, than warm the bench. He is a project after all, lets do this right.

McGee was picked over Arthur and Hickson, because athletic 7 foot trumps 6'8 and skinny (Arthur) and 6'8 and clumsy (Hickson). And he was the pick probably because Speights and Hibbert were already taken.

McGee is more skinny for his position than Arthur is for his, and Arthur was ranked higher than McGee in every pre-draft mock. We passed on Arthur, and I wonder if we would have taken Speights had he been available.

Re: JaVale McGee
I think we would have taken Speights because he can play some center. Arthur and Hickson can't.
Huh? Of course they will but for the Wiz, they wouldn't be playing as many minutes because AJ, Blatche, Pecherov and Songaila are fours and Etan is a five (in a fours body). Do you think EJ will go with some raw rookie or with more proven guys?

A slight misunderstanding here there had been a general discussion on this thread about who was the best pick at 18/most NBA ready.

Aurthur is MUCH more undersized for his position than Mcgee.

Why don't we just say that they are both under-weight for their positions and call it a day?

Re: JaVale McGee
Thats true. However, Mcgee is a better height for his position than Aurthur. Mcgee also has longer arms and a better frame to gain weight.

If there ever was a person ready and needing to go to big-man camp and have a personal big-man coach, its this guy.
EG - you drafted the player, now get him a big-man coach who can give him one-on-one training so that he can perhaps reach his potential.

Re: JaVale McGee
Arthur's measurements are underwhelming at best: he measured out at 6'8.5 with shoes, 220 lbs, with an average wingspan.
mcgee is physically just on another level than arthur. if arthur were stronger or a better rebounder, maybe i'd be on board, but he's weak at those things too. at least mcgee is a threat to block a shot.

What's with all the JJ Hickson love? I saw the game against Cleveland and my only impression was him hustling and missing easy put backs, and he made Blatche look like Kevin Garnett.

You've just flunked NBA101. A 7' 240 center > 6'8 220 PF.

Ruz, I am affraid it is you that has flunked basketball history 101. You just made the incorrect assumption that just because someone is taller/heavier, ergo, they are a better basketball player than someone who is smaller. So-then JaVale McGee would automatically be rebounder and baller than say 6' 9 Karl Malone, or Dennis Rodman who is the same height as Arthur and weighs less.
I use Rodman & Malone as examples, but you get the point.
Edit. Speights, Hickson, Dorsey, & Greene will have years under their belt before McGee even starts to be as good as they are now.

Context - I'd be more worried about Arthur's size for his position than McGees'. Right?
I was Speights' biggest fan - before the draft. Hickson and Dorsey are limited players, and I'm very doubtful about Green. McGee has the highest bustability quotient, but he has the highest upside (other than Speights). You take a chance on someone who could be a quality 7 footer over guys like Hickson, Dorsey, and Greene... if you have any guts and believe in your coaches.
