Good stuff, bro. I actually already had Madeleine Peyroux and Sophie Milman on my list, but now I've got two more songs for my playlist. :D

Man, the Kurt Elling dude is cool. Why have I never heard of him? I'd go see him if he was ever in "the DMV". I was kinda ho-hum about the Clare Teal cut but I'll check out more of her stuff. Thanks!

I have mentioned my love for Umphrey's McGee before....I will mention it again.

For real guys, this should be the song the team comes out to. This melts my face every time. Hell, it's called "WIZARD BURIAL GROUND" for God sakes...RAWK!

Soup! Whattup bro? How's your band doing? Still rocking DC area clubs? Is your bass player still blowing up amps? I still have a fried 16" speaker weighing down the trunk of my car since that RnR Lounge gig like two years back.

Don't know what it is, but I've lately felt compelled to get in touch with my Celtic roots. I've always enjoyed an up-tempo beer-swilling floor-stomper, ala most of the Pogues stuff. But lately, a couple bands have grabbed my attention in this regard.
"Frankie's Gun" by the Felice Brothers

You have to love a band that lays a piece of grungy corrugated sheet metal on the stage for band members to boot-stomp on for percussive effect.

I dig Madeleine Peyroux. My favorite track on Careless Love is her remake of Dylan's "you're gonna make me lonesome when you go" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wikgIWZdjZg .

Rico, if you don't already know her, you'd probably like Eva Cassidy. Real sad story -- local DC singer who did some amazing covers and arrangements of classic tunes, died young of cancer. In the last two seasons of American Idol there were finalists who got rave reviews for re-arranging classic songs (Katherine McPhee doing Over the Rainbow and David Archuletta doing Imagine). Both arrangements were rip-offs from Eva Cassidy.

Great Eva stuff:

WHATTUP! YEah we're good. We still play in the area, although not as much. We scaled back and spent the better part of 2 years working on our first album that came out in April.

Are you guys still rocking as well?

Dude, that song is freaking awesome.

Ever since you recommend them for Austin City Limits I checked out their catalog and was immediately drawn to Frankie's Gun.

It's on constant repeat when I put some whiskey in my whiskey.

I think this song portrays the hardships and true determination African-American men face when trying to forge a true relationship with a strong black woman.

Okay, working on my chill R&B slash neo-soul playlist now. Of course I got artists like Musiq Soulchild, Ne-Yo, India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Goapele, Floetry, John Legend, Dwele, Donnell Jones, Amel Larrieux, Chrisette Michele, and others I can't think of right now.

Any other suggestions?

Anthony Hamilton:

Comin' From Where I'm From

I have a sick remix of this song, which is apparently not on youtube. I'll put it on zshare when I get back home in a few days.

W. Ellington Felton (from DC)

Love's First Day at Work

Beautifully Absurd (w/ Prince Paul)

What You Wanna Know

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I just stumbled upon this killer Brazilian chill soul singer. She might fit in w/ your mix.

Sorta in the same vein but lesser known [afaik]:

Pacha Massive

Don't let go.

Your Love

Live band, soul, salsa, rapcetera with a true New York melange pastiche poupourri sauce sorta sound

I can't resist a band with a girl bassist playing a fat bottom bass.

Thank ya, Dallas. Yeah, I completely overlooked the obvious in Jack White, Radiohead ("House of Cards" also) and (the guy whom I've only been touting as the best artist of this generation) Elliott Smith. One day, I gotta do a tribute to Elliott on here and demonstrate why he was the king. Anyway, I'd never heard that Mars song. Love it. TY. A few others I remembered:

Deer Tick – “Art Isn’t Real”
Damien Rice – “The Blower's Daughter”
Dallas Green (a.k.a. "City" and "Colour") “Save your scissors”
Panda Bear – “Bros”
Xavier Rudd – “Let Me Be” & “Fortune Teller”
Eddie Vedder – “Setting forth” & “Hard Sun”

If you come up with others, please post. I can't think of anything Neil Young put to acoustic guitar worth a damn this decade. And there's probably a Tom Waits song I'm missing. And REM probably has squeezed out a decent song this decade. But, I wouldn't have a clue about them for the last two decades. And I'm thinking there are some reggae, latin, french, chinese or soul tunes I'm missing. Although personally, the only tunes I can think of (that are on acoustic from this decade) are Ziggy Marley tunes. And I'm not a fan of his new stuff. Ditto on the Gipsy Kings' stuff from this decade. Any Sizzla, Mavado, Burning Spear or Steel Pulse stuff on acoustic this decade?

Speaking of Neil, I came across this lil travesty. I blame the record exec at Geffen that obviously took advantage of a serious bender Neil was on when he o.k.ed this project:

Neil Young - Mr. Soul (12'' extended remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSamboTHc7U

All the hipsters love it I'm sure. To me, it represents the sellout of the heart of rock as properly depicted in "Almost Famous." Reminds me of Kiss' disco period. Although, "New York Groove" is a somewhat catchy tune. Anyway, just to cleanse the palate, here's the absolute classic original:

First, the big names you left off the list:

D'Angelo, _Voodoo_ (seminal neo soul album; folks are feenin' for his follow up album almost a decade later)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgtjSPkuJ-E

Jill Scott _Who Is Jill Scott_ & _Beautifully Human_ (amazing vocalist, poet, lyricist; excellent first album, very good second album, forgettable third)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSYMKUtNuw8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt8mNt94xJU

Then, the folks that time or the marketplace forgot:

Donnie, _The Colored Section_ (underrated album; socially-conscious R&B)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1jzlnVrM_I

Ledisi _Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue_ (strong jazz elements; excellent vocalist)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCupwHa66Tg

Tony Rich Project, _Words_ (not the Babyface clone he was labeled to be; one of the better lyricists out there)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbAO8F3pfAo

Raphael Saadiq, _The Way I See It_ (retro soul; Saadiq pulls it off)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIeJ56oIEIM

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, _100 Days_ (more retro soul. The Dap-Kings also backed Amy Winehouse on her big album. Winehouse is a wittier songwriter, but Jones packs a real old school powerhouse voice and shouldn't be slept on)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ouI5KcyHfE

Cassandra Wilson, _New Moon Daughter_ (contralto jazz vocalist singing over earthy, bluesy, R&B-ish production. One of my favorite albums of all time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6RXgMMwZuw

Omar, _There's Nothing Like This_ or _For Pleasure_ (singer/keyboardist, of the founders of neo-soul back in the early 90s, from the UK, got slept on over here)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFnclBOlr6o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27jUXxvricA

If you want straight ahead late 90s/early 00s neo soul, then here are a few other artists representative of the genre:
- Maxwell (yeah, he's big, I know; I'm not as much of a fan)
- Goapele
- Glenn Lewis
- Eric Roberson
- Peven Everett
- Julie Dexter (UK)
- Rihanna Benson
- Remy Shand
- Jaguar Wright
- Jazzyfatnastees
- Frank McComb

Enjoy.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.
